This originality was an artifact of the reviewers’ blank ignorance of its genres (children’s fantasy and the British boarding-school story), plus the fact that they hadn’t read a fantasy since they were eight. It was pitiful. It was like watching some TV gourmet chef eat a piece of buttered toast and squeal, ‘But this is delicious! Unheard of! Where has it been all my life?’”

I think every living space should have at least one unusual piece of art that's very important to the inhabitant but that may unsettle guests. I think part of the experience of ever visiting someone is coming across art like that, art that is a daily part of someone's life but that sticks out to you, art you wouldn't see anywhere else, art that you've probably never really looked at up close but you always know it's there, always feel it, and when you think of that person's home you tie it back to it. something unique. something that gives a rare feeling to a space, other than what you'd usually think to associate. something unplaceable. and yet, as strange as it feels to you, you know, ultimately, that it tells you something far deeper about this person. that kind of art
