This new Bounty paper towel commercial gets it right: a Black family that doesn’t look thrown together and everyone has natural hair!

Excel gum commercial showing an interracial couple. It’s a little unusual in Canada because most ads with mixed couples have the man as white and the woman as black.

It's time to play Find The Black Guy!
Today's contestant is the long running Action Plan commercials from the Conservative party of Canada. If you believed the ads then you'd think that Canada was devoid of pesky Moor blood.
Let's run one!

Iman and Naomi Campbell have joined forces with Bethann Hardison, a former model and model agent, under the banner Diversity Coalition. Iman’s Diversity Coalition has called out the designers it thinks are guilty of racism — and few of the industry’s elite remain unscathed. #racism #racists #fashion #iman #naomiCampbell #models #fashionweek #mfw #pfw #nyfw

This Chapman's ice cream commercial is a sneaky one. Here are the unspoken rules that they follow:
Black to the side.
Black actor not participating in the main actions/activities.
When in doubt, choose a black female over a black male actor. Black men are too threatening.

Ok, let's start with Tommy Hilfiger, a brand that enjoyed a big financial boom after being embraced by hip hop culture in the early '90's. After weathering the storm of what turned out to be a racial urban myth (Google it people) Hilfiger has had more diverse representation in their ads. But their campaigns still have a few subtle problems:
Brothers off to the side. Black people are rarely front and centre and play more supporting roles.
One or the other. Male. Female. Rarely both, never paired off.

Welcome
This is a non-scientific, educated layman's look at how the world of advertising depicts black people. Most of the time I will focus on subtle ads. Sometimes I will point out the more egregious bullshit out there. What makes me qualified? Astute powers of observation and a career in entertainment, media and communications. Enjoy
