Alright followers; fellow kpop fans; and well tumblr. I usually don’t ask much from my followers besides maybe to send me an ask or two asking me if i like cats or dogs (it’s cats), but today I come to you to beg ask for your help on this!
This lovely young lady in this photo is my younger sister Kelsey. She is a senior in high school, and at the end of her junior year last year was your average high school teenager. She is a part of marching band, rotc, she hates doing math homework, and she was healthy. One day about a week out from her 17th birthday she woke up and she couldn’t see out of one of her eyes. As most people would probably do, she freaked out, my family freaked out, and after multiple trips to the hospital later….
She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
What is MS you ask? Well conveniently I have this prewritten thing from the ms society.
Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million worldwide.
Now what does that really mean? It mean that the protective sheath that covers my sisters spinal cord up near her brain is deteriorating and as she continues to grow older her symptoms will only worsen. Already she as 13+ lesions on her spinal cord (the average is usually half that for people who have had the disease for decades). She still goes to school and is in band (even though she can’t stand outside during marching season for long because heat kickstarts the symptoms), she still is in ROTC (despite the fact that her dream to join the Air Force can’t happen because she’s unable to join now that she’s been diagnosed), and she still hates doing math homework (except now the disease is affecting her brain function and memory making it hard to maintain her grades).
She has been receiving a trial treatment for MS that she was only accepted to do because of how severe her case is for someone her age. For the past few months it’s been really successful.
However. As of today (Friday, April 10) she had to go to the hospital again due to severe back pain. After an emergency MRI, the doctors discovered more lesions. What’s that mean I hear you ask from your computer chair? The treatment isn’t working because her body has developed antibodies to the treatment. So she will continue now to develop more lesions. And what does that mean? As she develops more lesions the chance of her waking up and being paralyzed for the rest of her life increases. Waking up and being unable to see increases. The risks are only increasing.
So now that I’ve taken up a good portion of your dash with this post;; this is what I’m asking of everyone. On April 26th in the town I am stationed at; there is going to be an MS walk. So currently I’m trying to raise money for not only “The Fight to Cure MS” but also so I can send it(the page/support not the money) to my sister and brighten her day even just a little. Next week is her prom and senior week and instead of going to enjoy and prepare for that she has to get IVs for the next 5 days because of the newest discover. AND SHE’S REALLY BUMMED OUT ABOUT IT.
So please. If you could donate here to my fundraising page on the mswalk page it would mean the world to me. And if you don’t have money if you could please just reblog this and spread it. And if you want to be extra awesome and maybe send a shoutout to her telling her to feel better etc. My family, her, and I would appreciate it.
Even if you only donate 1$, if this is reblogged and reaches 500+ people that donate just 1$ I will meet my preset goal.
