VOTE UNDERTALE IN ROUND 2 OF THE GFAQS CONTEST! (please)

HERE’S WHERE YOU CAN VOTE – READ BELOW FOR MORE INFO

it’s that time again! Undertale has made it to the second round of voting for the GameFAQs “Best. Game. Ever” contest!! this time it’s up against Fallout 3, which is another very steep battle, but I believe if we stay determined we can win!

now, last time I led a rally for Undertale (it was facing Mass Effect 3) I discovered in the aftermath that some folks on GameFAQs were upset because they thought I was trying to sabotage the contest. they’ve had problems with this stuff before (a previous “Best Character” contest, for example, had people vote in L-Block from Tetris as a joke) and thought I was pushing for Undertale as a “joke” vote. so I’d like to clarify: I don’t want to push Undertale as a joke, or ask people to vote for it without knowing why I think it deserves the win. I genuinely love Undertale and want it to succeed, and I know there’s a lot of people who feel the same way! so this time around I’m going to explain my reasoning behind the pick

first of all, I’m gonna be frank: I don’t think it’s really possible to pick a single game and call it the best game ever. there’s so many different kinds of games out there, from short indie experiences to AAA blockbusters that are all really good. I decided to look at the list of my favorite games and decide which one I’d most like to root for, and the choice for me was obvious: Undertale. it’s easy to pick a well-known and big-name game like a Mario or Zelda game and watch it win, but I wanted to give an underdog the recognition I thought it deserved.

now, why does Undertale deserve to stand up there among the greats? here’s some of my reasons:

AMAZING SOUNDTRACK: look, have you listened to some of the songs on this soundtrack? they’re great. Toby Fox does great work and he’s excellent at making use of recurring leitmotifs in his work.

FUNNY AS HECK: I’ve noticed a lot of people who haven’t played the game think it’s just a bunch of shitty meme jokes but like… no??? Toby has a great sense of humor. the three “date” scenes are all frickin’ hilarious and the script is full of gems

DEEP NARRATIVE: despite being really funny at face value, the narrative goes deeper than that. depression, grief, loss, and morality. the game gets really deep and tends to have a big impact on the players, something which I always deeply appreciate

FULL OF LITTLE DETAILS: Toby put soooooo much work into all the little things in this game. characters have tons of dialogue for different things you do, there’s all kinds of little subplots running in the background that you might not notice on your first run, and the world tends to respond to what you do. even though it’s a rather short game, it’s packed very densely!

LIKEABLE CAST: I honestly can’t think of a single character in the game I dislike. your mileage may very, of course, but I find most characters have a good number of fans. it’s really quite striking compared to a lot of games which have a lot of bad apples in them

GOAT MOM:

as you can see, I have a lot of reasons to love Undertale! and chances are good if you’re reblogging this, you’re a fan of it too. so if you, like me, think Undertale is worthy of a win here, let’s all band together and try to push Undertale as far as it can go! voting’s only open for 24 hours, it ends near the end of the day Nov 23 - so go and vote!

Grillby Bonus Boss Fight (Genocide Run) (spoilers!)

I’m surprised I haven’t seen more posts about this fight.  It shouldn’t be that hard to find, since sans flat out tells you where to go.  If you head back to Grillby’s after beating Sans you’ll find him waiting there for you.  And he’s not happy.

The glasses scroll from right to left or left to right, and they get faster each time.

This one gets really tricky, since the bubbles don’t move in straight lines and you can’t stop moving.  It’s not impossible but I’ve never avoided taking damage.

And sometimes he just lets one of these loose.  This one doesn’t look too hard to avoid, and it isn’t at first.  But it can strike in the center or on either side, and he’ll sometimes do it in the middle of the other two attacks.

As you would guess from his defense, one hit is enough to take him down…but he immediately reignites no matter how many times you do.

The only way to make it stick is to make a detour to Hotland first.

If you carry the cup with you into the battle you have a new option in the act menu.

And with that, Grillby is no more.

"i only have what my nightmares tell me... but believe me when I say you're lucky you don't remember them. we died... a lot. even with knowing bits and peices from past runs i've never been able to save anyone." he was staring at the ground. this pained him to talk about.

Helvetica looked over at him, her demeanor had changed, she was more..panicky almost. “Not much, clearly.” she muttered, tugging at her sweater sleeves, “I just have nightmares or..deja vu, but it’s all always so foggy and I can never actually grasp them.. yet they always seem so real.” the edges of her mouth twitched. “What do /you/ know?”

his hands were shacking. he looked away. "no... it's - it's not just you Helvetica." took another bite to give himself time. he /needed/ to talk if only for her sake. "i.. i have them too. the deja vu. the nightmares..." his smile dropped. something she probably hadn't scene happen in years.

Helvetica paused, taking the time to once again swirl her bottle around and peer at it’s contents for a moment as she contemplated her next words. “It’s just…” she rolled her gazeto the floor. “Sometimes…it seems like entire days are just Deja Vu, honestly it feels like we’re just reliving certain days..” she rubbed her face softly, “Maybe it’s just me? I mean I’ve been kind of all over the place since I started having nightmares, so maybe it’s just me?” She didn’t want to go into detail, she’d mentioned nightmares before, but she never mentioned their contents or frequency, but ever since they started Helvetica felt like so many things were just like reruns of previous days, like they lived in a loop.
