J&K Govt to seize properties of drug peddlars

The Newscraving Desk Srinagar, Jan 7: The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kupwara, Dr. Doifode Sagar Dattatray today convened a meeting of District Level Committee of NARCO Coordination Centre (NCORD) to review the measures for controlling of drug abuse in the district. Addressing the meeting, the DC stressed upon all the officers to make added efforts for eradication of drug menace adding that there is a need for taking all stakeholders on board for their sensitization regarding the ill and disastrous effects of drugs on the youth and society. The DC directed for holding separate conferences for sensitization of religious scholars, besides, Numberdars, Chowkidars and PRIs. He also reviewed the measures for curbing drug abuse in the district. The SSP Kupwara informed that stringent measures have been taken by the Police department to curb the drug menace in the district. He informed that Kupwara Police has registered 89 cases under NDPS Act during the previous year 2022 which involved arrest of 161 accused persons, 30 PSA detentions, seizure of 27.11 kg Charas, 8.24 kg Brown Sugar, 20.20 kg Heroin, 450 bottles of codeine and recovery of fine of Rs.1182500 has also been made during the previous year. ASP Handwara informed that 52 FIRs have been registered under NDPS Act last year which involved arrest of 74 accused persons, 6 PSA detentions, besides, seizure of 13 vehicles, 8.88 kg charas, 2 kg brown sugar, 47 gram heroin, 540 gram Cannabis and fine of Rs.108040 was also recovered in the Police District Handwara. The DC appreciated the efforts of the Police department for putting stringent measures in place to minimize the drug abuse in the district. He also stressed for identifying the properties of drug peddlers and their seizure. The DC, while reviewing the status of Rehabilitation Centres, was informed by the CMO that 2 Rehabilitation Centres are functional in the district, one each at SDH Kupwara and DH Handwara. The CMO informed that referral rate of psychiatric patients has come down upto 60% in the district with the establishment of these Rehabilitation Centres. He directed the concerned to submit an action plan for further strengthening the Rehabilitation Centres in the District. He also directed for devising course and holding frequent interaction with the drug affected persons for their smooth recovery. The DC asked the concerned to submit a requisition of men and machinery required to ensure smooth functioning of the Rehabilitation Centre. Weapons issued to village guards in Rajouri after recent killings

The News Craving Srinagar, Jan 7: Deputy Commissioner Rajouri, Vikas Kundal, on Saturday visited the Baljaralan area to inspect the allotment of guns and cartridges to the Village Defence Guards (VDGs) to bolster the security of the area. The weapons and ammunition is being provided to the VDGs by Police authorities. A camp was set up for the purpose. The Deputy Commissioner interacted with the members of the VDGs and inquired about their familiarity with the weapons. He also urged them to work for the safety and security of the people in the area. The VDGs appealed for their special training to ensure that are comfortable while handling the weapons. In response, the Deputy Commissioner assured that village-wise training programs would be organized for the VDGs after the weapons are distributed. Panic in Rajouri as minor dies, 5 left injured in IED explosion

The Newscraving Desk Srinagar, January 2: A minor boy was killed and five people were injured, one of them critically, on Monday in an explosion outside one of the three houses where unknown persons allegedly resorted to indiscriminate firing yesterday evening in which four people including a father-son duo were killed in Upper Dhangri area of Rajouri district. Official sources said that the explosion took place outside the house of Rajendra Kumar whose son Deepak Kumar was among the four people killed in yesterday’s firing incident. Six people were injured in the explosion and one of them, a 5-year-old boy, succumbed to the injuries before being admitted to the hospital, they said. The explosion, the nature of which is being investigated and is suspected to be IED, took place around 9:45 am, they added. “A blast occurred near the house of victim of yesterday’s firing incident in Rajouri’s Upper Dangri village,” ADGP Mukesh Singh said in a tweet, adding, “One child has succumbed to injuries. Five persons injured, one critical. Another suspected IED was spotted which is being cleared.” Late evening, four people were killed in the village and they have been identified as Pritam Sharma (56) and his 33-year-old son Ashish Kumar, Deepak Kumar (23), a PHE employee, and Sheetal Kumar (48). Six persons were injured in the attack and among them two, Rohit Pandit (35) and Shubam Sharma (20) son of Pritam Sharma, were airlifted to the GMC Jammu. Four injured were admitted in the GMC Rajouri and include Pawan Kumar (38), Saroj Bala (35) wife of Sheetal Kumar, Sushil Kumar (40) son of Kundal Lal and Urishi Sharma (17) daughter of Sheetal Kumar. 3 civilians killed, 7 injured in firing incident in Rajouri

Further details follow,” the officer said, adding, “Search operation has been launched in the area”.  Dr Mehmood, Medical Superintendent, Associated Hospital, Rajouri, told GNS that three people were brought dead. “In all ten people were brought to the hospital and three among them were brought dead. Govt to e-auction 20 new mining blocks in J&K

The Newscraving Desk Srinagar, January 1: The authorities will e-auction 20 new mining blocks in J&K. This information was revealed as Secretary, Mining, Amit Sharma held a comprehensive interaction session with Mining Lessees of the Union Territory while reviewing the working of the Mining department at Udyog Bhavan. There was a broad section of lessees who attended this meeting, physically as well as through virtual mode while O.P Bhagat, Director Geology & Mining, Arun Manhas, Additional Secretary Mining, Aamir Rather, Under Secretary Mining, Nisar Ahmed and Harbans Langeh, both Joint Directors Mining and all DMOs remained present. Secretary took a detailed review from the departmental officers regarding enhancement of revenues of the department in the upcoming last quarter through maximum royalty collection, seizures and penalties so as to supersede the already set annual targets. He disclosed that in upcoming January itself, Department is planning to e-auction at least 20 new blocks in twenty districts of the UT. Apart from this, target is on towards acquiring two major mineral blocks of Limestone and Lithium from GSI in this month which shall be a-auctioned by the department for the first time. Amit gave a patient hearing to multiple issues of the lessees especially relating to smooth conduct of e-Challan transactions and directed that there should be two nodal officers henceforth to handle portal related issues in both Jammu and Kashmir Divisions so that the lessees can have more efficient working in mining sector times to come. He also directed that a dedicated helpline should be created for facilitating public as well as lessees in conducting mining transactions through G2B2C portal geologymining.jk.gov.in in times to come. Several other important decisions were arrived during the meeting including holding regular interaction meeting with all the stakeholders by respective DMOs, more vigorous checking by divisional flying squads and submission of weekly progress reports to the Administrative Department, Director G&M submission of a proposal to enhance limit of Disposal Permits by the DMOs. It was decided before the conclusion of this Meeting that Secretary Mining alongwith Director G&M shall hold similar interaction session with Lessees and all stakeholders soon in Kashmir division so that their issues can be given spot redressal soon through it. Night temperature improves in Kashmir; Gulmarg, Pahalgam record season's coldest night

The Newscraving Desk Srinagar, January 1: The night temperature improved further at most places of Kashmir while Gulmarg and Pahalgam again recorded the coldest night of the season at minus 8.2 degree Celsius and minus 9.4 degree Celsius respectively. Kashmir remained under intense cold for over one week. However, after fresh snowfall, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of the Valley recorded an improvement in the minimum temperature. The mercury in Srinagar settled at 0.5 degree Celsius. Temperature has improved in most places in Kashmir The mercury settled at 0.3 degree Celsius in Qazigund while Kupwara in the northern district recorded a low of minus 4.5 degree Celsius. Pertinently, the weatherman had predicted further drop in minimum temperature, saying that amid dry weather conditions till 7 January, the days will be warmer and the nights will be colder. The Newscraving Desk Srinagar, Dec 31: Additional Director General of Police Vijay Kumar on Saturday said that total of 172 militants including 42 foreign militants were killed in 93 operations in Valley this year. ADGP Kashmir, in series of tweets, wrote, “During year 2022, total 93 encounters took place in Kashmir in which 172 militants including 42 foreign militants got neutralised. Maximum militants neutralised from LeT/TRF(108) outfit followed by JeM (35), HM (22), Al-Badr (4) and AGuH(3) outfits.” “This year, 100 fresh recruitments into militant ranks were reported showing a decline of 37% compared to last year. Maximum (74) joined LeT. Out of total recruitment, 65 militants neutralised in encounters, 17 militants arrested and 18 militants are still active,” he added. The life span of newly recruited militants declined drastically. Out of total 65 newly recruited militants killed this year, 58 (89%) were neutralised within first month of their joining, he said. This year huge quantities of weapons (360) were recovered during encounters and modules’ busting which include 121 AK series rifles, 08 M4 Carbine & 231 pistols. ‘Extension wall’ of Hizb militant’s house demolished in south Kashmir

The Newscraving Desk Srinagar, Dec 31: An extension wall of the house of a Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant allegedly built on encroached government land in Pahalgam area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district was demolished by authorities on Saturday, officials said. An official said that the wall was demolished of the house of Ghulam Nabi Khan alias Amir Khan in Liver Pahalgam. He said Aamir is the operational commander of Hizb who crossed over to Pakistan in the early 90’s and is operating from there. 13 houses, 10 shops gutted in Anantnag

The Newscraving Desk Srinagar, Dec 30: At least thirteen 'inter-connected' houses and around ten shops were gutted in a massive midnight fire, augmented by the blast of 'ten gas (LPG) cylinders' in Dangarpora area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, officials said on Friday.  A firefighter leading the operation of Fire and Emergency Services Department said that at least 200 houses were saved by their “timely” action. “At 2:56 a.m., we received information about the fire. Since the Fire Service Station is just a half a kilometer from the area, we rushed a number of fire tenders immediately,” the firefighter said, as reported by GNS. “By the time we reached, the fire had spread extensively as at least ten LPG gas cylinders had exploded as a result of which there was extensive damage.”  He said that adequate number of fire tenders and men were rushed to the area. “Since there was adequate availability of water and firefighters along with locals put their best effort, we were able to prevent the fire from spreading further.”      He said at least 200 houses were saved in the very densely populated area of the south Kashmir district. Sources said that the 13 houses suffered damages and most of them have been completely gutted along with at least 10 shops. The Newscraving Desk Srinagar, Dec 12: Police on Monday said that it along with the army arrested a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) Over Ground Worker (OGW) in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. The police spokesman told a local news agency, Global News Service (GNS), that “based on a specific input, an operation was carried out on 18.12.22 by joint parties of police and 32 RR, leading to arrest of one militant associate viz. Mohd. Ishaq Lone s/o Bashir Ahmed Lone, r/o Village Nadihal, PS Panzalla, PD Sopore from village Chakloo Baramulla”. On his disclosure, the following recoveries were made from near Chakloo Ziyarat, Village Chakloo. The police spokesman further stated that “from his possession one Canister IED, 1 pistol, 1 pistol magazine, 18 rounds of pistol and 8 meters of Electric Wire”.
