A knock came from Niko’s door and before she could speak, it opened. Yuta grinned as he popped his head in.

“Hiya, Nini,” the older said as he walked in.

Niko playfully glared at him as he walked in and climbed onto her bed. “Watch it,” she hissed as he pushed Niko forward and then sat where she was, back against the wall. He then pulled her towards his chest, caging her between his legs.

“So what do you have for me to read today?” Yuta asked.

Niko saw his eyes roam to the manhwa she had in hand and pulled it out of his reach. “I’m not done with this one,” she said.

“Okay, then give me one you’re not reading. What volume are you reading? Give me the first one,” Yuta whine.

Niko rolled her eyes, but reached towards the stack of books at the end of her bed. She grabbed the first volume of the series she was reading and handed it to Yuta.

“Wait. Haven’t you already read this?” Yuta asked, looking at the cover. ‘BJ Alex’. He was pretty sure he’d since Niko read this just last month.

“Your point,” Niko raised a brow, then opened her book up again.

Yuta chuckled, “You like it that much, huh?” He then grunted as Niko elbowed him in the stomach.

“Hush, Yu-chan.”

Yuta rolled his eyes, but opened up the book. He’s read a lot of the mangas and manhwas that Niko owned, but he hadn’t read this series yet, though he expected it to be good with how much Niko raved about it.

The two read for about half an hour until they were interrupted by Johnny. Without knocking, he walked in and stood in front of the two. Niko and Yuta looked up at him.

“This is where you two ran off to? I was lonely. And here you are getting all cuddly and reading…” Johnny bent over to look at the cover of Niko’s book, “BL… BL?”

“Don’t make fun,” Niko whined, hugging the book against her chest. Haechan and Yuta were the only ones that knew that BL was her favorite genre. Well, Jaehyun did too, but Niko ran out of the room before she could see his reaction. Just the thought made her ears burn.

Yuta chuckled, covering her ears with his cool hands. “Johnny, you're embarrassing her,” he said. Niko grumbled. That was somehow more embarrassing.

“Sorry. I’m not trying to. No judgment here. I just didn’t peg you as a, what’s that Japanese word?” Johnny asked.

“‘Fujoshi’” Niko and Yuta both answered. Yuta amused, Niko defeated.

“That’s the word. Do you read a lot of them?” Johnny asked, genuinely curious.

Yuta motioned with his chin to the bookshelf in the corner. “That whole bottom shelf.”

Niko’s eyes widened, “Yu-Chan!”

Johnny walked over, squatting in front of it. “Holy shit. You even have merch. You’re a certified fujoshi,” he said, grinning when he looked back at Niko.

“This really feels like you’re teasing me,” Niko mumbled.

“What? No. I’m not. I swear. If anything, I’m kinda hurt that you’re here sharing your collection with Yuta and not me,” Johnny pouted.

“That’s ‘cause Yu-chan, is Yu-chan,” Niko shrugged.

“Is that a compliment?” Yuta whispered into her ear. When Niko nodded he shrugged. “It’s ‘casue I’m Yu-chan,” he winked at Johnny.

“What does that even mean?” Johnny scowled.

“I knew he’d be okay with this. With the rest of you guys, I’m not really sure. Plus I don’t broadcast my love for BL to the world. If you know, then you know,” Niko shrugged.

“Do you watch BL too?” Johnny asked, walking back to her collection.

“Yeah. Mostly Thai and Taiwanese,” Niko answered.

“That one in your hand is really wholesome and good for beginners,” Yuta said. Niko looked up to see the first volume of ‘Sasaki and Miyano’ in Johnny’s hand.

Johnny looked up. “What about the one you two are reading?”

Niko’s eyes widened just as Yuta said, “You’re not ready for this one.”

Johnny’s own eyes widened. “Niko!”

“This isn’t even that bad,” she whined, ears hot again.

“Do you own the worst ones?” Johnny asked, looking from Niko to her collection. He couldn’t tell just by looking at them, except- “Why are these wrapped?”

“He’s definitely a normie,” Yuta shook his head and went back to reading.

“A what?” Johnny asked. He didn’t know if he should have been offended or not.

“The ones in plastic have the explicit content warning, so yeah,” Niko whispered. Why did she have to have such an embarrassing hobby. Why couldn’t she collect stamps or something?

Johnny put down one of the plastic cover ones. “So porn?”

“Yu-chan, I want to go back to Japan. It’s safer there,” Niko whispered, hiding her face.

Yuta chuckled. “Johnny you said no judgment.”

“Right,” Johnny nodded, then picked up the book Yuta had recommended. He walked over and sat on the floor, back against Niko’s bed. “I swear I’m not judging you, Nini.”

Niko looked down at him and watched as he began to read. “Promise?”

“I promise. I may just tease every now and then, but know that I do it with love,” Johnny smiled, looking up at the girl.

Niko narrowed her eyes, but smiled. “Fine. I guess that’s alright.”

“Now, can you two be quiet. I need to concentrate. This is getting good,” Yuta hissed. Niko and Johnny laughed then went back to reading their own books.

Niko paused the video she was watching when she heard a knock at her door. Looking up she wondered if it was one of the trainees coming back to grab the last of their things.

“Coming,” Niko called out when another knock sounded. She got up and walked to the door. Opening it up, she came face to face with Yuta.

“Nini, yo,” Yuta greeted with a grin.

“Yu-chan? What are you doing here?” Niko asked, stepping back as Yuta walked into the dorm.

“Came to visit you. You’re meeting the members for 90’s Love tomorrow, so I figured I’d be that awesome big brother you always wanted, and help you learn about the members,” Yuta said, stepping fully into the small dorm.

It had been years since Yuta had been in a trainee’s dorm. It was cramped. There were three sets of bunk beds, a clothing rack and a coffee table all in the small room. The kitchen attached to the room was tiny. Yuta grimaced at the outdated appliances. (Was that duck tape holding the fridge handle together?)

Niko saw where Yuta was looking and scurried over to block it with her body. “I wasn’t expecting visitors,” the girl gave a nervous chuckle.

Yuta raised an unimpressed brow. “Clearly.”

Niko looked around the room, then sighed. “Just pretend you didn’t see anything. This can’t be any different than when you stayed at the trainee’s dorm,” she grumbled, ushering the older towards a spot on the floor in between the beds where her laptop sat.

“Where are the other trainees?”

“I’m the last one. The rest cleared out like two weeks ago,” Niko answered, shrugging when Yuta looked at her, frowning. “S’not so bad, really. I get the place all to myself.”

“Well, you’re moving out soon, so you won’t be alone anymore,” Yuta folded his arms over his chest, giving Niko a pointed look.

“Well, I’ll probably end up alone anyways, seeing as I don’t have a set group. ‘Cause if I start with NCT U, then that means I’ll only perform when they want me in a song,” Niko shrugged again.

Yuta tutted then bopped her head with the side of his hand. “Stop being so depressing.”

“Oi, Yu-chan! That hurt!” Niko narrowed her eyes at him, rubbing at the sore spot.

“Oh, please. You’re being dramatic. I barely tapped you,” Yuta rolled his eyes then ruffled her hair. Niko grumbled, but leaned into the touch.

Ever since coming to SM, Yuta had been like a brother to her. She had actually met him before coming to the company through Yuto of Pentagon, back when she was a trainee at Cube. It made the transfer over a bit easier.

Lately, Niko had been missing home, and Yuta had been the only one to help ease that ache. So, as annoyed as she was that he came unannounced, she was happy.

“Anyways, let’s get this study session going,” Yuta grinned, pulling out a green notebook. ‘NCT Profiles’ was scribbled in block letters on the cover.

Niko snorted then turned her laptop towards him, showing him her screen. Yuta looked at the video that was paused and chuckled at the title.

“‘NCT in a Nutshell’?”

“I was already studying before you came,” Niko giggled. She figured that the best way to get to know her members (Besides actually meeting them in person) was to watch some videos of them. And Niko knew which ones to look up. She was a kpop stan before she was a trainee. Seventeen, BTS, Got7, etc. The best ways to get to know the groups were through crack videos.

“Okay. So what have you learned so far?” Yuta asked.

“Let’s see,” Niko started off, tapping her chin as she pretended to think, “You’re all crackheads.”

“No shit,” Yuta chuckled.

Niko giggled. “Taeyong goes into mom mode off stage. Mark off stage is just a giggling mess. You are an unbothered king,” Yuta nodded smugly at that, “And the Dreamies are, or at least were, all freaking adorable. Now they’re all grown men.”

“That was all surprisingly accurate,” Yuta said, chuckling.

“Yeah? I did good?” Niko grinned, giving herself a pat on the back.

“Pretty much,” Yuta nodded, “Now let’s work on WayV and the rest.”

“I got this. If I can learn everything about Exo, Shinee, and all my other groups, I can learn about my own members,” Niko said, a determined look on her face.

Yuta snorted, patting her on the head. “I have full faith in you,” he teased.

Niko turned to him, grinning. “Okay, let’s go!”

About an hour and a half of taking notes and watching videos, the two stopped and looked at each other.

“Hungry?” Yuta asked.

“Hungry,” Niko confirmed with a nod.

“What are we feeling?”

“Black bean noodles.”

“It’s always black bean noodles with you,” Yuta shook his head, but pulled his phone out to place an order for the two of them.

“Is there a problem?” Niko quriked a brow.

“Of course not,” Yuta said and Niko stuck her tongue out at the sarcasm.

“Has the company mentioned any other songs you’d be a part of?” the older asked as he scrolled through the menu on his phone.

Niko sat back and shrugged. “They’ve mentioned a couple, but nothing has been set in stone,” she answered.

Yuta put his phone away then asked, “Which ones?”

“Resonance, obviously. They also said Work it and  Raise the Roof. The other’s are still pending. You’ll be in Work It, right?” she asked.

Yuta grinned and nodded. “Hell yeah. We’ll get to work together!” Yuta exclaimed.

Niko grinned just as wide. “I can’t wait!”

“Who knows, maybe they’ll add you as a late member to 127 like they did with Jungwoo. Then we’d always be together,” Yuta said.

“I doubt it, but it’s a nice thought,” Niko shook her head beaming. Being added to NCT 127 and performing with Yuta would definitely be a dream. Maybe she’ll wish for that every night.

“Niko?”

The Japanese girl looked up, wide eyed, turning to the man next to her, who would soon become her manager. “Sorry. What did you say?” she asked him.

The man chuckled, shaking his head, “Nervous?”

Niko felt her ears heat up. She looked down at her feet, then sighed. “A little. You’d think I’d be used to this by now. I’ve done the whole meet-the-new-group thing so much now that I’m basically a veteran,” Niko said, looking back up at the man.

“Doesn’t mean you can’t be nervous. It’s always new people, plus this time’s different, right?” the man shrugged.

“Right. Is the company really okay with this? I mean I’ll be the only girl. In an all boy group. I mean that’s gonna bring problems, right?” Niko asked, shifting her weight from one foot to the other.

“Trust me, the company wants this. You’re too talented to let go. And NCT is all over the place with their dynamic, that adding you in wouldn’t be that far fetched,” her manager chuckled.

Niko side eyed the man and raised an unimpressed brow. “Uh-huh.”

The man laughed, “Okay, so it’s still a bit different, but definitely worth a try. Plus you’re starting off with NCT U. It’ll be like a trial period.”

“That makes it so much worse, Jiwoo-oppa!” Niko exclaimed, yanking at her hair. “The damn pressure you just put on me with that one sentence.”

Jiwoo chuckled, and grabbed her hands out of her hair, placing them by her side. He then placed his hands on her shoulders and smiled. “Listen, kid, you’ve got more talent than you give yourself credit for. There’s no way you won’t make it big with this debut. Plus, you’re not the only one making their debut with this song. Sungchan is too.”

Niko dropped her head back and sighed. Closing her eyes she said, “You’re right. Okay, let’s get this show on the road. Bring me to my possible future members.”

“Right this way, Milady,” Jiwoo said motioning down the hall. Niko snorted, then followed after the older man.

They passed a few doors then stopped in front of a conference room. Niko knew that inside would be the NCT members that would be a part of this song. She frowned when she remembered that Yuta wouldn’t be a part of the group. A familiar face would have been nice.

Jiwoo opened the door and ushered Niko in. Taking a deep breath, she readied herself. She was finally going to debut after so many years. It didn’t matter how, as long as she did. Being the only girl was just a minor detail. She could work with that.

Once fully in, Niko looked at the seven boys all seated at the table. She knew who they all were (Yuta brought her a self made roster of the NCT members and helped her learn their names and faces.) and smiled when Mark and Haechan smiled at her.

“Hello. I’m Tanaka Niko. Nice to meet you,” Niko greeted, bowing.

Mark stood up and the others soon followed, bowing in greeting as well. “Nice to meet you,” Mark said.

“I’ll leave you to it,” Jiwoo said, patting Niko on the shoulder.

Niko’s eyes widened as she saw him go. “No wait, Oppa,” she said, but he just smirked as he walked out. The Japanese girl sighed, then slowly turned back to the others. “Hi,” she awkwardly waved.

Mark giggled as Ten walked up to her. “Come on and take a seat. I promise we don’t bite,” he told her, motioning to the empty seat next to Winwin.

She smiled at the Chinese boy and he offered a small one back. “Hi,” she said to him.

“Hello,” Winwin greeted.

Niko sat down and folded her hands in her lap. She then took a look around the room and saw that half of them were as nervous as her.

“Well, I guess we should welcome our two newest members,” Ten said, pointing to Niko and Sungchan. The pair flushed, but smiled at the others.

“It’s finally happening. Are you guys excited?” Yangyang asked.

“Definitely,” Sungchan grinned.

“I’ve waited a long time for this,” Niko nervously laughed, but then added, “Is it weird that I’m here?” She just needed to know. Niko really didn’t want to make anyone uncomfortable.

“I’m gonna be honest, the idea of a girl joining was a bit weird, but then Yuta-hyung told us it was you and basically gave us your whole origin story,” Haechan began to say and Niko cringed (What exactly had Yuta told them?), “and now we’re excited to have you here.”

Niko looked up, mouth slightly agape. He was joking right? There was no way that they’d be okay with her joining.

“You’re probably thinking that there’s now way we’d be okay with you joining, huh?” Ten asked, folding his arms over his chest.

Niko whipped her head towards him. Could he read minds?

“No, I don’t read minds,” the older chuckled, “But it was written all over your face.” Niko looked at him suspiciously.

“Niko, you’ve got talent. Your dancing is on another level, and your tone when you rap is like no other. Having you in NCT would be the perfect addition,” Mark said, leaning over in his seat, smiling.

Niko smiled sheepishly. “I mean. If you say so,” she shrugged, trying hard not to blush. Niko was shit at taking compliments.

“Okay, okay. Why don’t we start talking about the song?” Ten directed the attention away from Niko and onto the comeback (Debut for Niko and Sungchan).

“I already like the vibe to this song,” Jeno smiled.

“But isn’t it weird that we’re singing about 90’s love when only half of us are 90’s babies?” Mark laughed.

“Being a 90’s baby doesn’t even mean we know what 90’s love is. We were babies,” Niko agreed with a smile.

“Guys, let's not question, okay?” Ten smiled, shaking his head.

“Hyung’s right,” Winwin nodded, “Let’s just work hard and pretend we know what 90’s love is.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Niko agreed.

“Then let’s get to it,” Ten smiled.

Taeyong:

He was one of the first to accept her. He had seen her around the company for years and knew just how talented and hardworking she was. As much as he loves, she stresses him out. She has a knack for getting into trouble. She’s not allowed to go out by herself (he swears she is directionally challenged.)

Taeil:

Whenever Niko just wants to chill, Taeil is one of the ones she goes to. They’ll often watch dramas together or read, but once Taeil gets on that weird hyper uncle vibe, she’s out of there. The man makes her cringe so hard, and Taeil knows it, so he’s made it his mission to embarrass her.

Johnny:

When Johnny saw that there was another English speaker and someone else who knows what it’s like to have trained for so long, he quickly saddled up right next to her and offered her some of his snacks. Niko has been to America only a handful of times visiting her mother’s family, but after befriending Johnny, one would think she was born there.

Yuta:

The minute Yuta heard of a new Japanese trainee joining the company, he sought Niko out to welcome her. The two hit it off pretty quickly and Yuta took it upon himself to be the older brother she never had. These are joined at the hip and talk to each other in a mix of Korean and Japanese, often leaving their members out of the loop.

Doyoung:

These two took a while to warm up to each other. To Niko, Doyoung was cold and calculating, and to Doyoung, Niko was at times erratic and unpredictable. Taeyoung had to lock them up in the laundry room with snacks and games to get them to finally get along. They walked out with small bruises on their forearms. They had been playing the ‘Slap Game’ as a penalty for losing in ‘Uno’.

Jaehyun:

Niko was intimidated by Jaehyun when she first met him. To this day she still awkwardly stutters through sentences when with him alone. Jaehyun was under the impression that she hated him, but in reality she’s just a jumble of nerves when he’s nearby. It doesn’t matter how nice and caring he is to her, Niko just freaks out when attractive men are involved (She’d never tell him that of course, though he’s gotten the idea at this point). Jaehyun’s goal is to get Niko to hang out with him without her inviting another member along.

Winwin:

Niko hasn’t spent too much time with Winwin, seeing as he’s busy with WayV, but the few times they do see each, they tend to just chill together, watching their members goof around. Depending on their moods, they join in as well, but it never lasts long. Niko loves watching him dance and will often sit during his practice sessions watching his every move.

Jungwoo:

These two will wake up in the middle of the night for snacks and then camp out in the living room watching movies. They’re only able to get away with this because Taeyong’s on the lower floor, but the leader can always tell the next day with their swollen cheeks and dark circles. Jungwoo will sit with Niko while she watches anime, either watching as well or on his phone. And even when he seems like he’s not paying attention, Jungwoo can always tell you what anime Niko is currently watching.

Mark:

One of Niko’s favorite things in the world is hearing Mark laugh. It doesn’t matter if the joke is funny or not, if Mark’s laughing, so is she. She’s his number one hype-woman when it comes to his jokes. Niko likes spending time with Mark, and gets down when he’s too busy with his many unit commitments. His schedule stressed her out and definitely wants him to take a break, but knows that with his personality and with the company, that would never happen.

Haechan:

This man is everyone’s baby, but especially Niko’s (just ignore the height difference). He latches onto her and follows her like a puppy always looking for her attention. It doesn’t matter what she wants to do, he'll do it with her. But as much as she babys him, he is one of her fireces protectors.

History: Niko was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. Her father is a Music professor and her mother an English/Literature professor. When Niko was 14 years old she was scouted by a kpop company for her dancing and began her training. She bounced from company to company making the final line-ups to a few groups, but was always dropped right before debut. In 2017 she joined SM and was told that she would debut in their next girl group. She was set to debut in Aespa, but was pulled then dropped into NCT U for ‘90’s Love’.
