          ‘ 𝖕𝖊𝖗𝖍𝖆𝖕𝖘 , ‘ jervis plays easily, letting the word dance off his tongue.

         theatrics lend themselves easily to him- from his exquisitely out of date tailcoat, or the fact he absolutely refuses to match his jabot to his pocket square. his appearance is a mix of pastel patterns, positively brimming with energy, & jervis could not be any prouder. of course, the crown jewel of his presentation is his hat- adding eight inches to his height- adorned with feathers & pins & his 10/6 price card. 

         his attention is drawn back to oswald’s men, all adorned with disguised circuit cards, quite subdued in their visions of wonderland. for now, it was all pleasant dreams of the tugley woods & caucus races, visits from the earl of north umbria. jervis does hope it stays that way- he much prefers conjuring sunny afternoons than trials at the queen’s court.

         ‘ yet where would the fun be in that ? ‘ he asks, clasping his gloved hands together in an altogether foppish expression. his buck tooth grin cheshires across his face as he sweeps out an arm, gesturing towards oswald’s tea.

         ‘ it’s going to go cold, ‘ jervis says before allowing himself a laugh. ‘ though perhaps penguins prefer it that way! ‘

         he shakes his head, willing himself to focus on business, & returns his gaze back to oswald.

         ‘ ah, apologies, i mustn’t dally! i suppose you’re due an explanation, ‘ he starts. he takes a sip of his own tea, pinky finger squarely up, & sets it back on its saucer with a pleasant clink. ‘ i’m working on a machine. i started it a lifetime ago, in the hallowed halls of gotham university. when complete, i can sequence & process a human brain. there are limitless possibilities- storing ones memories for future generations, uploading entire personalities into ai, perhaps even splicing two brains together! ‘

         the excitement is palpable in his tone- his heart practically caterwauling against his resolution to avoid overloading oswald with the technical specifics. with a nod to the hypnotized henchman closest to him, jervis watches as the figure steps to the side, & grabs an antiquated briefcase. the man sets it beside oswald before returning to his vacant position, & jervis only smiles wider.

         ‘ hopefully my current technology is enough of a glowing resume. i know i can build this machine- i’m just missing a few vital pieces of circuitry. ‘ jervis takes another sip of his tea before continuing. ‘ in this case, i’ve presented schematics, blueprints of the building, & other relevant information. the technology i need is in waynetech- in my old wing before my tumble down the rabbit-hole. ‘

         feeling altogether content with the quality of his pitch, he bows his head slightly, as any decent performer would. he looks back across the table, the brim of his hat giving way to his blue eyes, & smile unending.

         ‘ i’m willing to pay in most currencies, or perhaps, we can broker an exchange of favors. either way- what do you think? ‘

❛ you know, ❜ he approaches the unoccupied chair at the table but does not deign to sit. not yet. ❛ if you wanted my attention, you didn’t have to go to such extremes. ❜ with a wary frown, he eyes the cup of tea set neatly on its saucer, the mud-green liquid inside it, opaque as a river bed. visible steam rises from its surface. his gaze follows it, lifting to regard the slumped, vacant bodies of his hired men sat like expensive dolls around the elaborate place setting, before landing on tetch, directly opposite. ❛ a telephone call would’ve sufficed. ❜

         ‘ there’s no need, ‘ jervis says, pulling his arm away. ‘ i am an old thing, & to - day shall not be my last. ‘

         his eyes, unnaturally & severely blue, survey the vampire before him, remembering idly some memory of america about a century ago.

         ‘ i did not invite you to my parlor to play nurse , ‘ he chides . ‘ i wanted the opportunity to introduce myself. i am dr. jervis leopold tetch, though i’m afraid my degree is somewhat... outdated. ‘

          i really am very sorry i haven’t been here! i had oral surgery friday & have mostly been sleeping since then. i return to work tomorrow which should be fun (lol), but i do have the day off tuesday, so hopefully i can do stuff then!

[offer] – sender has something they know receiver will want, and because receiver has had a bad enough day as it is, sender gives it to them. it’s the little things.

[concussion] – sender checks receiver for a concussion, because it’s very possible receiver has one.

          listen, i love a serious house on serious earth as much as the next mentally ill gay batm/an fan, but absolutely fuck grant morr/ison for kicking off the ‘jervis is a p*dop/hile’ movement. like... it was just so unnecessary & only speaks to a pattern of demonizing people who are schizo-spec, especially the ones who (god forbid) like ‘childish’ things.

         not that anyone needs an excuse to like children’s books as an adult, but a lot of times, it comes from a place of trying to heal your inner child, or trying to reclaim a childhood you never got to have. it’s far far far more likely that jervis has some sort of childhood trauma, than it is that he wants to inflict it.

i just got on lunch at work & found out. conroy was an absolute hero, beyond his work as an actor, & the world has lost a great man. i have so many emotions & absolutely none of the words.

         𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖔𝖑𝖉 𝖆𝖗𝖈𝖍𝖎𝖙𝖊𝖈𝖙𝖚𝖗𝖊 𝖘𝖕𝖎𝖓𝖉𝖑𝖊𝖘 𝖆𝖗𝖔𝖚𝖓𝖉 𝖙𝖍𝖊𝖒, spires scraping against the night sky, searchlights tracing their way onto the stars. it’s a cold night, unforgiving in its chill, & jervis treasures all the warmth his pink tailcoat gives. he rubs his hands together, gloved in blood - stained white lace, in an idle bid to generate heat.

         it’s much to his surprise - & utmost delight - when he sees the figure sweeping down towards him. 

         ‘ ah, good evening, boy wonder ! ‘ he greets, chipped - tooth smile peeling back on his face. he resits the urge to give a small bow, fearing the moment of weakness would be used against him. these young sidekicks of the batman do never seem to have manners. 

         ‘ oh my ears & whiskers, how late it’s getting ! ‘ jervis quotes easily, feigning a look at his pocket - watch & hoping idealistically that this newest robin will pick up the reference. ‘ yes, i say it’s high time i return to the queen of heart’s court. though, perhaps, you’d bid a poor hatter pity, & accompany me for a spot of tea ? ‘

         jervis steps back & gestures down the alleyway, revealing an excellently out of place table, set for high tea. mice scurry along the tablecloth, nibbling at the various pastries, but altogether acting with proper etiquette. at the head of the table rests a recently - missing tech executive, jordan reese, wearing a hat approximating that of the king of heart’s. he sits perfectly still, staring at absolutely nothing, holding an antique tea - cup in midair.

        ‘ do forgive me for not introducing you sooner, ‘ jervis says, smile unflinching. ‘ you’ll no doubt recognize mr. reese from recent news reels- he’s to stand trial soon for money laundering, insider trading, & misuse of company funds. i supposed, of course, that we could spare our over - worked courts the cantankerous task of arguing over his innocence, & merely talk it out over some earl grey. won’t you join us ? ‘

  ROBIN perches high above, dark green boots holding the boy stable on the outcropping. here, he is hidden in shadow – just barely. he can observe from here, he is safe up here. his mother taught him the art of slipping into shadow, his father taught him how to stay in them.

   his fingers dance over a dim HUD on his arm, more wayne tech that he’s still trying to understand – red robin is better with the technical nonsense. he scrolls, scrolls — the mad hatter, why has he never heard the name before? certainly, he’s studied at least most of batman’s case files. at last, a match: jervis tetch, former wayne tech employee, current villain at large. he takes a breath & drops from his perch until his feet touch ground, toes before heels.

WHAT COLOR IS YOUR AURA?

          fractured by the atlantic, only to be remarkably close & far away again. while university had seen julian fully allowed to become himself, it was also a biting reminder that his twin wanted nothing to do with him. that their early years throwing impromptu tea parties in the living room, or caucus racing through the school yard had truly meant nothing. late nights staying up, discussing the results of early experiments were simply the follies of childish imagination. what a bitter stroke of irony then, that they should get employed at the same institution- in the same department, nonetheless.

          julian was hesitant to return back to the states, but his student visa was up, & he couldn’t find a suitable entry-level position in the uk. that wasn’t to say he didn’t want the job at wayne enterprises- it was everything a researcher of the brain could hope for. a well-equipped lab, ample funding, & the promise of helping to forge a better world. & perhaps, even, a chance to reconnect with his brother.

          he hesitantly knocks at the door of jervis’s lab, only noticing it already ajar. with a cautious hand, he pushes it open, & feels all the bread-and-butterflies slithing in his stomach. he had practiced what he was going to say during the morning commute, muttering various hello’s & nice to see you again’s, but presently, julian can’t remember any of them.

          ‘i brought you this,’ he says quite abruptly, holding up a nicely wrapped cylinder. ‘i don’t know if you’ve switched to coffee these days, but in the off chance you haven’t, i picked up this loose leaf hibiscus blend.’

          he’s trying, but the shame has a way of cutting through him. no one has ever paid much attention to him, or spared him a single breath outside of asking to collaborate on labs or copy off of his study guides. julian wants so desperately for this to go well- for him to just have his brother back- but he refuses to get his hopes up.

          ‘it’s a congratulations on your new job, & graduation, & missed birthdays.’ julian pauses for a moment, only to add with a small laugh, ‘not to mention all of the unbirthdays as well. if you’re... still into lewis carroll at all, that is.’
