I've seen pieces from this extra comic before, but never read the full thing until today. And holy shit does it hammer home just how much the story is about class.

Multiple times, when food comes up in this comic, it’s also in context of money:

I've seen this last panel on the right brought up before in context of like, dungeon meshi's relationship with fat and eating, but in the full context of the comic it really hits how much adventuring directly consumes bodies for money.

As much as this has been part of the story the whole time, showcased as early chapters 19 and 20...

It never fully hit me before how often adventuring comes down to having no other way to make money but to throw yourself into death repeatedly. To be used, whether it’s by individual selfish people (like the resurrection group that is happy to try and get Kabru's group to kill each other to get extra gold from them in chapter 32), or by the greater cog of the Dungeon Economy in general.

Which, to be clear, is all too often how things work in the real world, too. So many jobs burn through the health and lives of workers. Dungeon Meshi just makes it literal in a new way: by making the healing and resurrection, a core part to the adventuring loop, directly use fat, muscle, and energy from the body being healed.

Imagine Amazon, but if you got injured at work, they could literally burn up some of your body to get you back to working sooner. And that was seen as an advantage of the job.

And then you have Laios, thinking about eating monsters:

Not just because he likes monsters a lot. But because it would help. He says something similar in the actual manga too, during the chapter discussing his dream with the Winged Lion

Laios wants to be able to make a home for Falin. He wants to give her a place where she never has to eat alone. And when he gets a party, he wants to give them a way to eat well. And when he runs a country, well…

He wants to ensure that everyone has enough to eat.

Food is political. Food ties into class, and money. What is deemed "proper" to eat, what is a luxury, what is crass… so much of it comes down to money.

Being judged for eating what's available, when what is “proper” isn't affordable, is already a thing that happens. People forced into work that consumes their energy is already a thing that happens.

Dungeon Meshi has a lot of fantastical elements, but boy is its examination of food and class very real.

"brain sync/neurologic link/kinetic controls make the mech a second body" is great and all but where's the love for the no brain link, no kinetic controls, no shortcut to skill type of mecha pilots. Where everything done entirely through a complex series of switches and levers and buttons.

Your only way of interfacing with the colossus of smoke and steel is to learn it's language, there is no advanced AI whispering secrets to the internal mechanics that interpret your motions, there is nothing to translate even a simple motion such as moving an arm and grasping firmly to your mind.

You and this machine could not be more different. The barrier is as immense as the ocean and you are a lost traveler without a compass or a map subject to these rough waters. If you want to converse with this divine machine, you must learn to navigate the abyss. Memorize every bullet, rocket, and blade contained within. Know every servo, every piston, every wire. Learn every limit, every threshold, every quirk, every gimmick.

Become so deeply familiar with every switch, dial, knob, and lever at your fingertips that it becomes a second body not through any magic link or miracle of science, but through practice, intimacy, and determination.

If your goals basically amount to "after The Revolution everything will be great because people will all have the Good Ethics and work together in my Perfect System and the Evil People with Bad Morals and Bad Behaviour who are making this world bad will be gone (killed/imprisoned/exiled/all converted to agree with us when they see our Perfect System)" then that's just fascism. I'm a black trans intersex butch lesbian who has hung out in a lot of queer spaces, especially lesbian centric spaces. While the ones I've hung out in have been mostly inclusive, there's sometimes some cis white lesbians who view me as a threat that should be kicked out of lesbian spaces. I am not a man, but strangely enough, I'm being treated like one by these people because I'm black, trans, and present masculinely.

Where am I going with this?

The way that the lesbian label is policed so heavily in online spaces is horrifying. It's horrifying to see the amount of people who are absolutely obsessed with keeping the lesbian label "pure and untainted." It's an insult to lesbian history, the way you all get mad when lesbians have fucked up genders or are gender nonconforming. It's an insult to lesbian history, the way that you all go after any lesbians who have a connection to things commonly associated with manhood.

You see, it doesn't matter that you don't mean masculine lesbians or androgynous lesbians or transgender/nonbinary/multigender lesbians or black lesbians or fat lesbians when you're obsessed with purging all hints of manhood from lesbian spaces. It doesn't matter what you don't mean, what matters is that you're following the same line of thought as the people who do mean all those lesbians when they talk about purging manhood from lesbian spaces. You might see those people as lesbians, but the next person over saying the exact same thing as you doesn't.

When I see you all obsessing over gatekeeping all aspects of manhood from lesbian spaces, I see a cis fem white woman at a lesbian meetup telling me that I don't belong there because I'm a man. When I explain that I'm not a man, she says that I'm "too close" to being a man for her comfort. How are you actually going to tell that someone's a man invading those spaces if they don't tell you that? Are you going to call a butch who presents too masculinely a man? Are you going to tell a multigender girl who likes girls that they're not a lesbian just because they also happen to be a boy? Are you going to start trying to gatekeep everyone who isn't a skinny white fem from lesbian spaces? Where does your gatekeeping actually end?

And don't even get me started on the attraction gatekeeping, because it's literally just regurgitated gold star lesbian shit. You're hurting a lot of people with your lesbian separatist garbage. You're hurting bi people by defending an ideology that violently threatened so many of them, you're hurting lesbian sex workers who have had to have sex with men in order to feed themselves for another week, you're hurting trans people by saying the exact same things that TERFs say, you're hurting black, two-spirit, nonbinary, and multigender people with your binarist "nonmen" garbage, and so on.

TL;DR: Your obsession with gatekeeping the lesbian label is doing nothing to help lesbians and everything to harm the most vulnerable and most commonly erased lesbians. Lesbian gatekeeping is just lesbophobia.

Its extra insulting to chide me for comparing my own disabilities to things people hate about children bc in the end I also like "children's" media and "eat like a child" and have "childish" emotional control and so many other things people hate about autistic people and. I've earned the fucking right. If the only thing I can eat at most restaurants is on a children's menu, I can absolutely feel a sense of solidarity with kids on a level of how people see them vs how they see disabled adults like me.
