🍔 Review № 478 ━ 📍 POPL ★★★★☆ • Behind the counter at Copenhagen’s POPL you’ll find veterans from the world-renowned and 2-star Michelin restaurant Noma, who now have opened a burger restaurant. Their menu is short and sweet, and we ordered their Cheeseburger with a 160-gram organic beef patty, cheese, red onions and a burger sauce for 150 DKK (23.5 USD), plus both french fries and a pickle and chili starter for 45 DKK (7 USD) each. And also some chili mayo for 10 DKK (1.5 USD). • The starter consisted of 3 cornichons and a couple of pickled chilis and were a bit of a disappointment. So we were happy when our actual burgers arrived. The bun was nice and fluffy and held together throughout our meal. It was immediately obvious that they used high quality beef, and all of the other ingredients really enhanced the beefy flavours. But despite the high quality the patty was a bit compact, and it lacked some crust on one side. The patty was also a bit smaller than the bun. The cheese tasted nice but could have been melted more, and we would have liked some more different textures in our burger. The rest of the ingredients were excellent; the burger sauce contained coarsely chopped pickles, just enough heat and was really well-balanced with an acidity that shone in every bite. And the raw red onions was sparsely spread throughout the burger and didn’t take over. The french fries and the chili mayo were really impressive, and definitely worth ordering. • We applaud POPL’s initiative and think that you definitely should visit them the next time you’re in Denmark. 🍔 Review № 477 ━ 📍 Lilla Trädgårn ★★★☆☆ • Lilla Trädgårn on the Swedish island Gotland have a summer restaurant in Ljungarn and a food truck outside the Stora Coop grocery store in Visby. The restaurant usually has several dishes on the menu, while the food truck’s offerings are a bit more scaled back. We ordered two different burgers; a Chili with cheddar, chili mayo, jalapeños, pickled red onions, raw white onions and lettuce and a Creamy Jalapeño with double cheddar, cream cheese, jalapeños and pickled red onions. Both burgers cost 109 SEK (12.5 USD). We’ve eaten burgers in strange locations during all kinds of weather conditions, but we felt that the staff here were unnecessarily unenthusiastic. Sure, we were standing in a rainy parking lot, but this was nothing new for us. But when our meal arrived we realised that the kitchen staff and the people who took our order must have felt about the same amount of enthusiasm, because both our burgers looked a bit boring. • The best part of our burgers were the beef patties, 180 grams of Swedish chuck and brisket, and we could see that they’d spent time and effort on it. We really appreciated the flavours from the distinct beefiness. The soft brioche bun and the cheddar didn’t add much though, and the menu’s promise of carefully selected ingredients felt a bit like empty words. Overall, our burgers could have done with more salt, and also some more different textures. The Creamy Jalapeño was creamy, but needed to be balanced out. And no burger had any noticeable heat, which we would have expected considering their names. • Lilla Trädgårn serve a decent burger that’s definitely worth its price. 🍔 Review № 476 ━ 📍 TK Burgers ★★★☆☆ • The small food wagon TK Burgers can be found in various places around Linköping, but during the summer months they move out by the beautiful Bergs Lock’s in Göta Canal. There they serve a handful of different burgers, including a vegetarian and a vegan option. We ordered a TK, which contained two 130-gram beef patties, cheddar, bacon, pickled red onions and truffle mayo. The burger itself cost 110 SEK (12.5 USD), and a meal with french fries and a soft drink cost 135 SEK (15.5 USD). • The burger came in a classic brioche bun that was nicely toasted on the inside. The double patties were pretty hefty – 260 grams in total – but they were a bit overcooked and pretty crispy on the outside. They were completely cooked through, and we would have liked for them to be a bit softer and juicier on the inside. Apart from a few chewy parts we enjoyed the taste at least, and the fat content was nice and high. The bacon was salty and flavoursome, but was pretty hard and chewy as well. We liked the acidity of the pickled red onions, which really spruced up our meal. It also really cut through the truffle mayo, which could be found both in the top and bottom part of the burger. Thankfully the truffle amounts were pretty well-balanced, so it didn’t overpower our tastebuds either. • We left TK Burgers with a feeling that it really should have been slightly better. The view over Göta Canal was stunning and we liked their low prices, but the many small mistakes really held them back. 🍔 Review № 475 ━ 📍 Blacksmith Burger ★★★☆☆ • Blacksmith Burger is a small food truck located in an industrial park in Fosie, in the southern parts of the Swedish city Malmö. This truck comes highly recommended from you readers, so we made an effort to visit them seeing as they’re only open for a few hours during weekdays during the lunch rush. We ordered their HotCheese 2.0 for 95 SEK (11 USD). The menu stated that it would contain two slices of cheddar, jalapeños and a hot parmesan mayo, but it also came with lettuce, tomato, pickles and red onions. We also added some bacon for 10 SEK (1 USD). • Our burger came neatly served in a small tray. The 180-gram patty was just the right size, with appropriate proportions between the beef, bun and other ingredients. Flavourwise, the burger had a mellow and warm heat that elevated it without taking over and becoming too spicy. The beef patty tasted alright and was properly seasoned, but was a bit compact and chewy. The other textures worked well with each other though; the tomato was thinly sliced and wasn’t cold, the bacon was crispy and salty and the pickles were nice and savoury. We liked how the bun tasted, but it was a tad dry. The cheese didn’t add any creaminess or flavour though, and didn’t contribute much to this otherwise quite tasty burger. 🍔 Review № 474 ━ 📍 Rost ★★★★☆ • The rock bar Rost in the Swedish city of Ängelholm is one of our most requested reviews, and our expectations were high. Their large menu contains almost 15 different burgers, and we ordered a White Wedding with three 90-gram patties, pepperjack cheese, cheddar, browned onion jam, white onions, jalapeños, deep-fried onions and burger sauce for 239 SEK (27.5 USD) and their donut burger Dirty Deeds with two 90-gram patties, cheddar, bacon, pickles, white onions, deep-fried onions, mustard, burger sauce and lettuce in a sugar donut for 194 SEK (22.5 USD). We also ordered some french fries for 39 SEK (4.5 USD), mac n cheese for 55 SEK (6.5 USD), plus two glasses of tap water that strangely enough cost 10 SEK (1 USD) each. • It took a long time before we were allowed to order and even longer until we got our food. The burgers looked great, but when we lifted them we noticed that the beef was so soft and airy that it fell apart. The staff informed us that their latest beef delivery had a high content, but that they like it when the patties melt in your mouth. Sure, we agree – but that doesn’t mean that our burgers should dissolve before we’ve eaten them. This meant that a large part of our meal required a knife and fork. Thankfully the beef tasted amazing, and it was very clear that they used high quality cuts. We liked the bread on our White Wedding, but the bottom bun should have been toasted more to handle all the juices. Flavourwise everything was well balanced, and the browned onion jam tasted great and was really interesting. Our Dirty Deeds was a bit more chaotic, with soggy lettuce and so much mustard that it overpowered the other ingredients – even the sweetness from the donut.
