Thinking about that one single heartbeat hidden in the background when you beat or lose to Yozora, when the scene transitions to the Final World
And also that red light pulsing like a heartbeat on Yozora’s face in the secret ending

Doors to Light
Tumblr media
So at the end of KH2 Sora asks Riku what he thinks the “Door to the Light” was, and Riku gives a pretty vague answer by pointing to Sora’s heart and saying “It’s always closer than you think”.  I’m not entirely sure what he means by this, but I think he means the “light” is always closer than you think?  I’ve also read somewhere that the door opened when he read the letter because his heart responded to his connection with Kairi, which created the doorway…but I can’t remember if that was from an interview or just a fan theory.
Anyway,  what I was thinking about was- since we know the Door of Light that lead to Destiny Islands had to do with Sora’s heart and/or his connection with Kairi, what is it that created the door of light that lead to the Dark Margin?
Tumblr media
Remember that Sora and Riku were basically stuck in the world of nothing, and Riku didn’t think they could get out- then eventually a light appeared that led them to the Dark Margin.  So maybe it’s just one of those things that never gets explained- game logic and all that- but I do have a bit of a theory of how it could be explained- at least vaguely-, if they ever wanted to give a hint towards it.
In Chain of Memories, Repliku wonders where his heart will go when he fades away.  Riku says “Maybe…to the same place as mine”.
The Dark Margin has been described as a place at the border between the realm of light and the realm of dark (though it seems to be on the side of the realm of dark).  You could say it exists between light and dark.  What else does this description fit?  Riku.  I might be stretching it here, but from the ending of KH2 it seems as though this place is where Riku believes his heart belongs;
Tumblr media
And perhaps his heart did belong there (though I doubt it does anymore).  My point is, if Repliku’s heart went to the same place as Riku’s belonged at that point in time, then maybe Repliku’s heart went to the Dark Margin as well.  And from the KH3 theme song trailer, we may actually have a hint that he did end up there:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What I’m trying to say is that if the Door of Light that brought them to Destiny Islands was created by Sora’s heart/his connection to Kairi, then maybe the Door of Light that brought them out of the world of nothing and into the Dark Margin was created from Riku’s heart/his connection to Repliku whose heart was there.  I don’t know, it’s not much to go off of, but rewatching the ending of kh2 got me wondering about it.  It will be interesting if they address it in kh3.

Kingdom Key D and Sora's Heart
Gonna paste some thoughts about Kingdom Key D that struck me last night:
Ok so on the topic of KKD being Sora’s true keyblade aka the one made from his heart (as KKL is made from Riku’s) it just struck me that in kh3 Mickey tells Yen Sid that his keyblade-kkd- was damaged in the realm of darkness along with Way to Dawn breaking in half.
Now we already know the theory that Way to Dawn actually broke during Riku’s sacrifice in the first unseen timeline, lining up with the “drop point” when Riku gets swallowed up by the demon tide in the RoD… but if kkd is made of Sora’s heart and what I suspect about Sora’s heart breaking or being damaged in some way during Riku’s sacrifice in the first timeline…That would perfectly explain why kkd randomly gets “damaged” despite them not even showing it to us and quickly glossing over it!
Think about it. Before kh3 we never even knew keyblades getting broken or damaged was a possibility- because keyblades are extensions of a person’s heart not a truly “physical” object. The only other time we’ve seen a keyblade actually be broken was in recoded when Maleficent breaks data Sora’s keyblade. And the ONLY reason she is able to do this, as explained, is because that keyblade was just a data imitation, it wasn’t tied to a real heart. Until Data Sora gets a heart of his own.
Keyblades don’t just break or get damaged because they get hit by a strong heartless. Sora and Riku have faced stronger enemies that small demon tide plenty of times. No. Keyblades only become damaged if the heart they are extension of become damaged. That has to be it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way Mickey says this and it’s just completely glossed over. Why would they even bother having KKD getting damaged and replaced when it’s an iconic keyblade and they don’t even SHOW the damage. It makes no sense... unless it’s planting a seed. Something to come back to with new context. Rather than getting a full replacement Mickey seemingly fuses KKD with Star Seeker, his bbs keyblade, in order to repair it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is also the first time we’ve seen this type of fusion of keyblades, again with zero explanation or showing it happening on screen. Star Seeker also happens to be the keyblade Sora gets with his first drive form, Valor form…
The fusion keyblade is called Star Cluster, and also apparently in jp it is “Kingdom Key W” (what does the W stand for??) The Star/Galaxy aesthetic also reminds me of that starry space in ReMind where Sora connects constellations…
Other things:
Apparently in Japanese the letter W is very commonly used as an idiogram for "Double" or "Two". This would make sense for a fusion keyblade like Kingdom Key W. Other ideas that were suggested: W for Waking, W for the "Win" timeline (as the previous timeline was fated to be lost to darkness). It's possible it has multiple meanings.
2. “Only King Mickey can open a door to the realm of darkness. It’s because he has a special Keyblade of Darkness. He figured out how to make it open the way.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As stated in the kh3 glossary there are only three ways to enter the realm of darkness voluntarily: Beings of darkness have the power to open paths to it, a special keyblade of darkness (of which I believe KKD is the only known example- Nomura has explained that it doesn't mean that the keyblade's nature is dark or evil, only that it's a key that works on doors to/from the RoD), and the power of waking (which Sora uses to reach Riku).
I just think it's interesting if KKD is made from Sora's heart it just so happens to be this special keyblade of darkness. It's a complete mystery as to why KKD was just sitting there on the dark side of Destiny Islands. Mickey seems to know that it's a counterpart to KKL and that it would appear where KKL appeared....but how did he know that? What does it mean? Another interesting connection- during the fall of Destiny Islands notice how the door from Sora's dive to the heart appears in front of the Secret Place, and how the door within the cave only blasts wide open when Sora gets near.
Anyway, I've always thought KKD getting damaged was wierd and suspected it had something to do with what happened in the first timeline but assumed it had to do with Mickey's heart getting damaged somehow. But this makes so much more sense to me- after all we know KKD isn't made from Mickey's heart, it was just a keyblade he found. For both Way to Dawn and KKD to have become damaged as a result of Riku's sacrifice, due to whatever happened to Sora and Riku's hearts....it just makes sense. Sora's heart was damaged, so of course the keyblade made from him would be too.

Darksides are and always have been Sora’s shadow, literally and figuratively. That is why they are depicted with tear lines streaming down their face as though they are crying, with their mouth covered and gagged by their own body, unable to express their emotions, and a hollow chest. In this essay I will

Show, Don’t Tell
An analysis of how Riku is shown as the light in the darkness for Sora in kh3, unrealized by Sora (yet) due to confusion over his own feelings and preconceived expectations.
Tumblr media
The most important clue, the real clincher: The fact that they put a literal light in Riku’s place during the segment of the Dive to the heart that is a 1:1, shot for shot parallel of the kh1 opening:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
An important difference here though, is at the end of the sequence, Riku’s light isn’t underwater like Riku is in the KH1 op- instead the light is above the water, symbolizing that Riku overcame the darkness he fell to in KH1:
Tumblr media
(Hence why he can be Sora’s light now.  Remember, Sora is shown blinded by Riku’s light in kh1 before he falls to darkness)
Then we come to Riku’s sacrifice.  Earlier we had Mickey telling Riku, “Sometimes you care for somebody so much, that other feelings disappear.  And then there’s no room for fear or doubt.”, and now we see this in practice, and who that “somebody” is, conclusively.  It’s framed as one of the most significant moments in the game: the slow motion as Riku calmly walks away from Sora, all sound fading away except for Riku taking a breath before he puts his entire being into protecting Sora from the demon tide.  The force of the heartless creates a literal tunnel of darkness around them, with Riku as the light in the center.
Tumblr media
They absolutely did not have to make the visuals like this.  They could have had Riku cast a reflect shield around himself and Sora until the heartless broke through it like glass- similar to how Vanitas tried breaking Aqua’s shield during her fight.  But instead, they made sure Riku was a singular point of light in a tunnel of darkness as he protects Sora with everything he has.
Not only are the visual similarities clear, also take notice of the repeated compositions between the two scenes, many shots paralleled right to the end, with Sora reaching out to Riku.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I should also mention here that when Sora calls out to Riku in the tunnel and says “Riku! Answer me!”, the light starts making an odd sound as though it IS anwering him, and Sora gets a look on his face that makes it seem as though he’s having a revelation- or is on the cusp of one:
Tumblr media
And when Sora reaches the other side of the light, where else does it lead, but straight to Riku.  As if that wasn’t strong enough a hint on its own, Sora finds him floating atop a sacrificial tripod that seems to be a reference to the Delphic Tripod of Greek myth, which was used to deliver prophecies of Apollo, god of Sun and Light.
Tumblr media
It’s an important point that the light only leads Sora to Riku.  Through the rest of the sequence Sora is led through dark portals created by the lich.
After this, we get to another tunnel scene, which is hugely important but has been controversial to say the least.  In order to not make this post a mile longer and keep anything that can be misconstrued negatively off of this one, I’ll go through that scene in the next part.

So, go easy on me. This is my first time singing/recording/editing/mixing anything-- let alone posting it, but I really wanted to participate in March Caprice this year. I wouldn't have been able to even do this much without the incredible @projectdestati lending me their sensational talent for the accompaniment.
I hope one day to re:record this piece sometime down the road when I've got a few more collaborators (and can afford a decent microphone), Hopfully by then, I'll learn how to mix, or can afford to pay someone to mix it into an actual track. For now, there are 2 versions-- one with lots of nerdy call backs and the other that's a little more simple and .... tidy.
All that to say,
I rewrote the lyrics to Hikari to reflect the themes of Kingdom Hearts a bit better. Hikari has always hit a bit different than Simple and Clean, for me and I just wanted to sing along, so I made these lyrics. Hope you enjoy :)
Lyrics:
Been having dreams, At least it seems That way… How much is real Of what I feel And say?
Was I reckless diving in so deep and believing you would follow me, And dive in after? Was I wrong all along ? You and me weren't meant to be :( How can I face what lies ahead? How is this the path that my heart led?
And now dawn is breaking and soon you’ll be waking This that path I am taking Will lead me back to you. Hearing the dark call, I’ll fight it with my all Keep shining bright, Cause you’re my guiding light.
~Break~
Now back to back, We walk our paths, my friend But when we meet My hearts will beat again
Never thought that it would end like this-- With you and me facing the great abyss Though doors are closing Pick a side, you and I, we’ll get by Cause you’re next to me, we are the key we always were. Take my hand, And we’ll go together
~Break~
And now dawn is breaking and soon you’ll be waking This promise we are making Is like the one we made while Watching the stars fall-- I promised you my all. I’ll stand and fight For you, my guiding light
Slowly, The pieces come falling into place, and we’ve landed standing hand in hand. Regardless of heartless, I know that we’re prepared for this fight. You’re my guiding light.
Slowly, The pieces come falling into place, and we’ve landed standing hand in hand. Regardless of Darkness, I know one day we'll set this all right. You’re my guiding light.
