Light and love’: family and friends to honour Jesse Baird and Luke Davies at Sydney vigil

The grieving families of Jesse Baird and Luke Davies will join friends at a vigil to honour the men as Sydney’s LGBTQ+ community attempts to come to terms with their alleged murders.

Friends of 26-year-old Baird – an AFL umpire and former television presenter – and 29-year-old Davies – a Qantas cabin attendant – organised Friday evening’s memorial event in Darlinghurst’s Green Park with the blessing of the men’s families.

“Thank you to everyone who has reached out for a community vigil for Luke and Jesse,” said New South Wales independent MP Alex Greenwich, who helped secure the use of the park, adding that condolence books would be available to sign at the event.

Paul Toole faces likely challenge as NSW Nationals leader from Dugald Saunders

Paul Toole may be challenged for the position of NSW Nationals leader tomorrow, when the party meets for the first time since last month's election, in which it failed to make any ground. The ABC understands that former agriculture minister Dugald Saunders will nominate for the position when the party opens the ballot for leader.

The Nationals lost one seat at the election, the southern NSW seat of Monaro, which returned to Labor's Steve Whan.

The party also failed to gain back the previously held seats of Orange, Barwon and Murray, which were all retained by independents.

Bradley White, 42, sentenced for fatal shooting spree at Wyong on NSW Central Coast in 2020

A man convicted of an hour-long shooting spree that terrorised a NSW Central Coast neighbourhood and left one man dead has been sentenced to 42 years in prison.   Bradley Jason Mark White, 42, was found guilty of seven charges, including murder, in Newcastle Supreme Court in October.  

Justice Mark Ierace handed down the sentence in Newcastle Supreme Court on Friday.

For an hour on a late March afternoon in 2020, Cutler Drive in Wyong came under attack from a "haze of bullets" fired by two rifles by White from the front of his house.

Byron Tonks, 20, was shot dead while sheltering in a nearby house and two others suffered back and shoulder injuries from the bullets.

Tambaroora bushfire in NSW Central West upgraded to emergency level, homes damaged

Firefighters are racing to protect homes as an out-of-control blaze in the New South Wales Central West is upgraded to emergency level for the third time in three days. The blaze which has damaged some homes continues to spread at a rapid pace in the Hill End area, about 80 kilometres north of Bathurst.

The Tambaroora, Alpha Rd blaze has grown by more than 8,000 hectares since last night.

The fire, believed to be caused by lightning on Sunday afternoon, is now 12,500ha in size.

Former NSW Labor minister Ian Macdonald found guilty of corruptly awarding mining licence

Former NSW Labor minister Ian Macdonald has been found guilty of wilful misconduct after granting a mining licence to a company run by ex-union boss John Maitland.

The former NSW resources minister was found guilty of two charges, while Mr Maitland was found not guilty of being an accessory to the offences.

Justice Hament Dhanji found the "driving force" behind Macdonald's decision to grant an exploration licence to Doyles Creek Mining Pty Ltd in 2008 was a benefit to Mr Maitland and his company.

No Christmas joy for rescue dog Kumquat, stranded overseas as his 'family' frets in Australia

The Australian owners of a beloved rescue pooch stranded in the frosty northern hemisphere say they're heartbroken he won't be in Australia for Christmas due to quarantine delays.  

Kumquat, a corgi-samoyed cross, was the centre of his family's life in China until they relocated to Newcastle early this year and he stayed behind to meet quarantine regulations that have stretched into significant delays — and costs to match.

First, Kumquat had to wait at least six months then pass a rabies test. Then had to transfer to a rabies-free country, in this case South Korea, before getting clearance to fly down under.

But a rabies-free Kumquat remains stranded and Kumquat's owner Rene Macarthur says he is missed every day.
