Halemaʻumaʻu From The Air
Halemaʻumaʻu is the main crater of the Kīlauea volcano on Hawaiʻi. This shows just half of the crater. In the lower left corner, you see the now-closed Jaggar Museum. The museum was closed after the summit collapse of 2018 made the structure unsound and unsafe.
Also during that summit collapse, the vast upper crescent of flat, lowered rock that you see under the left edge of the crater was formed. This is called the 'down dropped block'.
To the right of that, you see the dark lava rocks from more recent eruptions within the crater. That area roughly outlines the overall size of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater prior to the 2018 collapse.
The summit of Kīlauea is ever changing!
