the "came back wrong" trope except like... they didnt. like this mad scientists wife died, and so he studied necromancy, brought her back, and she came back and it all worked. like she came back exactly the same as she was before with literally no difference. but the scientist guy is like "oh no... what have i done.... shes Different now!!!! she came back Wrong!!!!" and shes just like. chilling. reading a book. cooking dinner. shes just so so normal but in the guys mind hes like "oh shes soooo weird" but shes just normal

Okay but regarding a TLT adaptation the ideal form is actually a muppet movie BUT the only characters who are muppets are the lyctors. We go into GTN with absolutely no idea it’s not a standard adaptation until we land at Canaan and we meet Dulcinea Septimus and she’s a muppet. (If we’re assigning Muppet actors I’m thinking Gonzo, he’s the best ingenue but I’m open to suggestions.) No one addresses this. We get no more muppets until near the end when Ianthe becomes a lyctor. A pivotal moment, she’s sitting under the ‘you lied to us’ message, blood dripping down her arms and face and also she’s made of felt and just a little guy. The Cytherea Ianthe fight at the end there is brutal and visceral and also borderline very funny. Harrow turns into a muppet momentarily at the end of GTN but is a person in a spaceship full of muppets for the entirety of HTN.

the lyctors are generally a lesson in irony but specifically the "saint of patience" being consistently fucked over by being too late feels especially potent. he's convinced he could have saved his brother, given five minutes to change his mind. he finally tells John to give up his imperialist revenge fantasy ten thousand years after it began. he doesn't go to bat for Mercy against John until she's already dead. patience was Alfred's virtue and inaction is Augustine's downfall!

i thought for SURE there would be a post out there about doubling/mirroring in the handmaiden so i didnt bother to take more screenshots than these but i now cant find anyone talking about it so here i go anyway. like yes resemblance between women can be the result of enforced conformity to standards of femininity but also and crucially recognition of resemblance can act as a gateway to feelings of solidarity that eventually allow two people caught in a trap to stop climbing over each other and start boosting each other up instead. there is something about the pursuit of lesbian relationship that allows for the full realization of the radical potential embedded in that initial moment of recognition; that perverts and corrupts a resemblance which originally served as an expression of conformity into a marker of belonging to a conspiracy against one's oppressors. lesbianism here works as the antidote to the problem of fragmentation posed by the gothic double; if in sedgwick's formulation doubleness arises because the gothic self is "blocked off from something it ought normally have access to," such that the doubles become "counterparts rather than partners" and "the relationship between them is one of parallels and correspondences rather than communication," lesbian relationship reforges the unity that has been ruptured by conditions of exploitation, isolation, secrecy, and violence, reuniting doubles who have been made to oppose one another despite their parallel positions in narrative and social structure. even if all that initially caught their attention was their shared features, that moment of identification creates an opening through which they are able to recognize their shared interests and as a result move to avert their shared fate.

Peak Bruce Wayne behavior is making the front page of 5-10 different tabloids the night before for something insanely graphic and/or embarrassing and then immediately having to drop into a Watchtower shift with, you guessed it, a man whose literal job revolves around being aware of the news, a man who’s half computer and therefore half internet, a man he’s known since boarding school (and who was probably there last night), a mind reader, several people with enhanced senses who can tell how hungover he is, and his friend’s wife who’s a mental healthcare provider (and is silently judging his coping mechanisms during this meeting)

My opinion on the 'would modern au Harrow be goth or Catholic' debate is that she would be both and it would throw everyone off. She goes equally hard on both of those things and no one knows what to do about it.

mercy killed john cleanly. he did not die in pain, she did not disrespect his body; she killed him quickly and efficiently and that was it. john killed her brutally!! he mutilated her and covered someone else with her gore and only then killed her with a tap to the back of the head. he ripped a dead woman’s cloak from her body and touched her corpse with his bare foot to prove a point!!
all this to say: necromancy is disrespect for the dead under the guise of reverence, and john isn’t even bullshitting respect for the dead anymore in Thee most obvious way. god’s mercy is finite and he has none left; i suspect that his “i’m just a little guy :)” act is at its end and we are about to see more of the man who claims that guys like him don’t make mistakes.
