Record #288: English Teacher - This Could Be Texas (2024)
English teacher are such a cool band to me cause they're the only one i can say i knew before they were big (i saw them when they opened for the yeah yeah yeahs in 2022 like a month or 2 after polyawkward dropped) but i'm gonna put aside my bias/fandom for them and just say that this record is great and would probably be my favourite release of the year even if it was someone else's project. Fav tracks are Albatross, The World's Biggest Paving Slab, Im Not Crying, You're Crying, This Could Be Texas, R&B, Nearly Daffodils, You Blister My Paint and Sideboob. 8/10

Record #286: Lana Del Rey - Born To Die (2012)
I would not have listened to this album if i wasn't in a charity shop and spontaneously picked up a copy to fulfill a 3 cds for £1 deal. Kinda glad i did though cause i was pleasantly surprised at how little the album's legendary and singular status actually impacted my listening experience. In other words, its good and the nitpicks i see a lot of people pointing out didn't really make my experience worse. Lana is weird though so i get people not liking HER specifically but i had a decent time with the music. Fav tracks are Born To Die, Video Games, Diet Mountain Dew, Radio, Carmen, and Summertime Sadness. 7/10

Record #285: billy woods and Kenny Segal - Hiding Places (2019)
I stumbled across this album after going through a wikipedia deep dive and think i found a hidden gem. Its got great production, great lyrics and a vibe that makes it feel 20 years older than it actually is (in a good way). Fav tracks are Spongebob, Spider Hole, A Day in a Week in a Year, Bedtime, Speak Gently, Bigfakelaugh and Red Dust. 8/10

Record #284: Beyoncé - COWBOY CARTER (2024)
This is probably a bad album to make my first listen from her but certainly not because of the quality. Coming from someone that isnt much of a fan of country music, this sounds pretty great to my ears. Fav tracks are AMERIICAN REQUIEM, 16 CARRIAGES, MY ROSE, BODYGUARD, DAUGHTER, ALLIIGATOR TEARS, LEVII'S JEANS, YA YA, RIIVERDANCE, SWEET ★ HONEY ★ BUCKIIN and AMEN. 8/10

Record #283: Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us (2024)
Pretty damn great production and some really reflective lyrics. This is probably their best record, or at least tied with Modern Vampires. Fav tracks are Ice Cream Piano, Capricorn, Connect, Gen-X Cops, Mary Boone and Hope. 8/10

Record #282: The Libertines - All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade (2024)
I wasnt expecting much from an album released 20 years after their initial meltdown, let alone their heyday, but this was surprisingly decent in its execution. Fav tracks are Run Run Run, Merry Old England, Night Of The Hunter, Shiver and Songs They Never Play On The Radio. 6/10

Record #281: Fabiana Palladino - Fabiana Palladino (2024)
Probably one of the best records ive heard this year so far, manages to blend 80s pop with 90s R&B and makes it feel fresh with some great songwriting. Fav tracks are Can You Look In The Mirror?, I Can't Dream Anymore, I Care, Stay With Me Through The Night and Deeper. 8/10

Record #280: James Blake - Overgrown (2013)
This is the first full project of his that i've heard that leans more towards R&B than electronica but its a surprisingly smooth and well-executed change in sound. Fav tracks are Overgrown, Take A Fall For Me, Retrograde, Digital Lion, Voyeur and Our Love Comes Back. 7/10

Record #279: Skinny Pelembe - Hardly The Same Snake (2023)
I found this album because the cover was randomly featured in a youtube video i was watching and its a pretty solid and surprisingly polished listen, especially considering how little ive seen people talk about it. Fav tracks are Same Eye Colour, Hardly the Same Snake, Don't Be Another, Oh, Silly George, Charabanc and Well, There's a First. 7/10

Movie #48: Robot Dreams (2023)
A really great movie that not only had an ending that is simultaneously soulcrushing and extremely optimistic but also made me really think about how well a story can be told without any dialogue. Like I was aware of silent films and liked a couple of the ones i watched before but it was kinda eye opening to see a modern movie tell such a powerful story without something as "vital" as dialogue. Highly recommend it. 8/10

Record #278: Amy Winehouse - Back To Black (2006)
I'm a little iffy on this albums current reputation, between the mythologization of Amy after her death and the colossal wave of throwback soul/doowop records that she inspired afterwards which wore thin after a while, but i also understand that a lot of the hype just comes from it being a really lively and fantastic project that took classic sounds and retrofitted them into a modern way. Its the pop equivalent of Is This It, both in its approach to older music styles and also its sheer quality. Fav tracks are Rehab, You Know I'm No Good, Me & Mr Jones, Back To Black, Tears Dry On Their Own, Wake Up Alone and Addicted. 9/10

Record #276: The Roots - Things Fall Apart (1999)
I wasn't aware of the roots much aside from their work as the house band for the tonight show, but checking this album out makes me really curious and excited about the rest of their discography. Its a really thoughtfully written and performed album with immaculate production. Fav tracks are Table Of Contents (Pts 1 & 2), The Next Movement, The Spark, Dynamite!, Without A Doubt, Double Trouble, 100% Dundee, You Got Me, Don't See Us and The Return To Innocence Lost. 8/10

Record #275: Gorillaz - Plastic Beach (2010)
I think this is their best album. A really well thought out and cohesive concept with fantastic production, some of Damon Albarn's best lyrics and great contributions from guest artists throughout. I dont think it will replace demon days in my heart (that album is just too important to me personally for it to be supplanted) but as a project, i really think they knocked it out of the park here. Fav tracks are Welcome to the World of Plastic Beach, White Flag, Rhinestone Eyes, Stylo, Superfast Jellyfish, Empire Ants, Glitter Freeze, On Melancholy Hill, Broken, Plastic Beach, To Binge, Cloud of Unknowing and Pirate Jet. 9/10

Record #274: Everything Everything - Live with The No.6 Orchestra (2019)
Some pretty beautiful interpretations of their material, even the tracks im kinda iffy on with their main albums sound fantastic on here. Kinda makes me curious on how a studio album with a full orchestra would sound from them. Fav tracks are New Deep/White Whale, The House Is Dust and No Reptiles. 7/10
