Coping Chapter 2
Coping Chapter 1
Warnings: ANGST but not too bad… not yet anyway :), mentions of bullying, insecurities, miscommunication?? (i think)
WC: 3K
A/N: none, just hope you enjoy :D!
Mondays, everyone’s least favorite day of the week. For Y/N, it was her favorite. Most weekends, she can’t see or speak with eddie. He's usually with the band or Hellfire and she’s under the strict surveillance of her mother. So yes, Mondays are her favorite, she gets to see her lover again. She walks into school with a pep in her step. Stopping by her locker to get all the necessary books for the day, she sees a certain metal head standing in front of it. Her smile is contagious, the one she has whenever she sees him. “M’lady.” he greets her with a smile, “good sir.” She gives him a small, and giggly, curtsy. “I don’t think I told you how beautiful you looked on Saturday.” Y/N was never good at taking compliments, spending much of her middle school years being the “ugly” friend, being the one cruel boys used to ask out as a joke. She was never used to someone complimenting her. She looks away shyly. Eddie hated that about her, how little she thought of herself, he was desperate to show her how beautiful she really was. “I’m serious, you looked really hot! You wanna be my groupie?” he jokes, he can tell she needs a comedic break before she shuts down. She smiles incredulously and slaps his arm. Somehow they've gravitated towards each other during their exchange. She looks up at him, he looks down at her, lips so close, a whisper away. “Eddie! I heard you went to a Whitney Huston concert! You're losing your edge, man!”. Dustin. They jump apart, pretending as if nothing had happened. “Henderson, if you don’t keep your voice down, I will make sure to kill off your character in the next campaign, kay?” Eddie smiles at Dustin and heads to class, but his smile is anything but friendly. Sighing, Y/N gathers her books, ruffles Dustin's hair with a smile and leaves to her class.
The day went by slowly, as it usually does when she doesn't get to see Eddie much. She doesn't understand, he usually walks with her to their shared classes and tries to sit next to her but today he was avoiding her like the plague. She understands that they don’t want Dustin to know of their “relationship” but this has been happening too often for her taste. They’ll have a heart to heart, a tender moment of closeness and vulnerability, and he avoids her for a bit. She wonders if it's her fault, maybe if she hadn't opened up about the bullying she’d experienced in her old school, maybe if she had not asked about his mother, maybe if she had not stood so close to him, maybe. The situation puts a damper on her mood. She wonders if he will be okay to give her a ride home at the end of the day. She walks to the parking lot at the end of the day and her response comes to her in the form of Eddie's van being nowhere in sight. He does this sometimes, when things get too much he’ll skip his last few periods and go home. Thankfully she sees Robin about to get into Steve's car, running to them she yells “Hey can I catch a ride with you guys?”. Steve turns to her and gives her a smile and a nod, as she gets in he gives Robin a pointed look to which she responds with a warning glare. He ignores it, “not that I don’t love giving you a ride, don’t you usually ride with Munson?” his question startles her, though she knew it was coming. “I don't think he felt good and left early.” she shrugs, too embarrassed to admit the truth: he had left her.
Tumblr media
2 days. 2 whole days that Eddie has not spoken to Y/N, the disappointment she feels comes to her in waves. He no longer calls her in the evenings, which she first chalked up to him being busy completing the next campaign, but when he blatantly ignores her at school, she knows something is off. He would walk the other way if he sees her in the halls, ignores her smiles, and won't even meet her eyes when he accidentally looks at her. To say she was hurt was an understatement. But she knew, she knew that he needed to recharge after a tender moment between them, only, recharging had never lasted this long before. The boy was odd, never had a serious relationship, but then again, neither had Y/N. She would tell herself that it was the bad boy persona that he had to maintain, that he was really changed for her. She was never really sure, embarrassed to explain to Robin how she was left by the only boy she's ever cared about, she suffers alone. But everyone has their breaking point.
Robin knew that there was something going on with her friend, her smile was not as bright as it usually was. Afraid of the answer, she didn’t ask Y/N what was wrong, but she had a feeling. In actuality, Robin felt guilty, she is the one that encouraged Y/N to pursue her crush on the metal head. She fed into Y/N’s delusion that he was interested, now she wasn't so sure. She has not caught them together in a few days, even in a group, Eddie seems to always be missing if Y/N was there. Something was definitely going on.
Thursday, first period: English. One of the only classes that Robin had with her best friend and coincidently, Y/N’s favorite class. At the moment though, she couldn't be bothered to listen to another Shaksperean romance, they all end up in tragedy anyway. She couldn’t help but feel like Katherine, the shrew, being constantly manipulated by the man of her desires. The more she thinks about it, the more her nose starts to tickle and her eyes begin to burn. Before a single tear falls from her tired eyes, she runs out of the classroom, half heartedly making an excuse about going to the toilet. Robin watches but before she can go after her, the bell rings, signaling the end of the class period. She quickly collects her and Y/N’s things before going to look for her. Hawkins High is small, it was easy to find her.
The forgotten bathrooms towards the 400 hall was where she had found shelter and where Robin came to find her. She hears slight sniffles as she approaches a stall, she slowly opens it to discover her friend. She looks so small, so fragile, so delicate, it broke Robin’s heart. “I brought you your things.” Robin gently states. Y/N refuses to look up, too ashamed. “Look, I know Eddie is a jerk. I don’t know what's going on with him, but you can’t let him do this to you.”, her gentle gaze makes Y/N shrink into herself more. Had everyone noticed already? After a beat, the broken girl collected herself enough to croak out,”I just don't understand what I did wrong.” Robin didn’t know what to say, she wasn’t 100% caught up with the situation. Y/N catches her hesitation and sighs, “we have these tender moments and he leaves. At first I thought he was scared of being vulnerable but this time he wouldn’t even look at me. I just wish he would talk to me, I hate feeling confused more than anything.” she sobs out. Now Robin really doesn't know what to say, so she hugs her friend. She tries to put her together with a tight embrace. She stops crying, it's pathetic. Robin pulls away from her friend enough to look at her face. “Maybe he doesn’t know how to be vulnerable, and he is scared of what a relationship with you might mean?” She doesn’t know why she defended him, maybe it was the guilt. She's not sure, but before she can process what she is saying, she is uttering the worst piece of advice she thinks she's ever given: “just give him more time.” Y/n looks at her with wide eyes, even she knows, deep down, that that's not right. Yet, she can’t help it, she’s spent so much time on him to give up after a small fight. She decides to take Robin’s advice.
Tumblr media
The school day came and went. Y/N still trying to collect herself after her small mishap. With her head in the clouds, she failed to notice the fluffy haired boy that was entranced by her. He tried to meet her gaze but her eyes seemed to be stuck to the floor. The girl had stopped trying to talk to him after monday after school, it was like she didn’t even try, but he still felt for her. He knew he had to do something. He waits for her, outside his van, to take her home as he usually does. As he has not been doing for 2 days. He looks through the sea of teenagers, thanking his height for helping him look over heads, for her. When he finally sees her, he smiles, but that quickly disappears when he sees that she is walking with Robin towards Harrington’s car. Without thinking, he starts walking towards them. “Hey aren’t I taking you home?!” he projects his voice as he nears the duo. Y/N looks at him confused, looking to Robin for clarification. Robin can only offer a shrug and a smile, as if saying “I told you so.”. She gently pushes Y/N to Eddie and whispers a “go”. Still confused but not ready to give up on the boy, Y/N steps closer to him and mutters a “lets go.” Eddie can't contain his grin, he looks up to give her a silent thank you but he is pinned to the ground by her hard glare. It seems that she knows something that he didn't. He quickly turns and follows Y/N to his van. He opens the door for her, making sure to catch an eyeful of her backside, and gets into the driver’s side.
It is dead silent as he pulls out of school. He doesn’t like it, she won't even look at him, opting for looking out the window. Usually she is a chatter box that doesn't know when to shut up, he doesn’t know what's going on. Or at least he pretends to be confused, it's easier to ignore an issue than to face it. He attempts to break the silence, “Are you hungry? We can head to the diner for some shakes!”. She almost snaps her neck to look at him, absolutely perplexed. This is one line that they have never crossed, being alone in public. The sheer thought of being seen together frightened Eddie, he was never sure why. His go to reasoning was to not be seen by Dustin, but now he seems to care less and less about that. Her skeptical gaze makes him want to explain himself, to save himself from embarrassment. “It feels like we haven't talked in a while and I just want to catch up with my favorite girl.” this makes her break, she smiles at him. Bingo! He’s got her back. “Maybe another day, I've had a long day and I just want to go home and sleep.”... or maybe not. “No, yeah, of course, sorry, how about we go out tomorrow? It’ll be like a date!”. Now he must know what he’s doing, saying the words that she had been dying to hear since she met him. She keeps Robin’s advice in mind, “maybe he needs time.”, maybe that was all the time he needed. Maybe they would be okay and live their happily ever after. Then, why did she feel like there was something wrong? Despite her better judgment she says, “yeah, that would be nice.” with a small smile and a twinkle in her eyes. Just in time, Eddie pulls into her driveway. She smiles at him, gathers her backpack, says a small “thank you”, gives him a small peck on the cheek and gets out to go into her home. His tires screech, quickly backing out of her driveway and driving off, not waiting to see if she got into her home safely.
Tumblr media
“Did I just see Munson approach you and Y/N?” Steve's tone is accusatory. “Well if you saw it, I don’t know why you would ask me, genius.” Robin was really not in the mood. After comforting Y/N, and feeling awful for her dubious advice, she saw Vicky with the same jock as before. Only this time, Vicky caught her staring and gave her a sympathetic look. It made her feel less angry, at Vicky, at the situation, at herself, and that could be very dangerous for her fragile heart. “Do you not remember how miserable she’s been? She may not say it but I know it's because of him!” Robin's ears start to grow hot. She knows. God does she know, but her guilt and pride won’t let her admit that Eddie is no good for her friend. ‘It's his first “relationship” too, he's just nervous.’, she has to keep repeating that to herself before she goes insane with guilt and shame. “They are going to work out whatever problems they have and you are going to let them do that. ALONE.” she sighs, wanting this conversation to be over but also unbelievably intrigued. Did Steve actually like Y/N? She had accused him of having feelings for the girl, it was the only thing that made sense, but she didn’t know for sure. “Why do you care so much anyway?... Do you actually like her?”. He releases a big breath through his nose, “No, not like that. I care for her as a friend, as a best friend even. I just…, I was like Eddie, you know?” he pauses and Robin raises a brow. “I treated people like shit and took people for granted, like Nancy. And look where that got me, look at what I did to Nancy.” Robin can’t help but feel bad for him. “but at least Nancy had Byers to fall back on!” He gives an airy laugh that seems a little too cruel to be genuine. “Y/N doesn’t really have anyone like that, if he fucks her over, I’m afraid she’ll never recover and she’ll end up like me. Haunted by a relationship that didn’t work out, one where one person is clearly doing okay and the other one… isnt.” Steve’s brown eyes stay put on the road, not having admitted any of this to anyone before, he feels exposed.
Robin has been left speechless more times in the past week than she has in her entire life. She feels for Steve, the break up with Nancy was awful, it left him searching for her in empty bodies. Steve can claim he is a womanizer but those who really knew him, knew that he was a lover. The 3 of them were. Robin, in a forbidden love with a girl too afraid to express who she really was. Steve, in love with someone who had clearly moved on, unable to move on himself. Y/N completely infatuated with someone who may not reciprocate the same affections she did. All 3, doomed in all prospects of love.
Tumblr media
After their heart to heart, the both quickly clock into Family Video. Not wanting to experience Keith's wrath, or bad breath. A slow day for the store, they entertain themselves by tossing snacks into each other's mouth, when the phone startles them both. Dying for an out of the slow day, they both dive for the phone. Robin easily winning with a faul move, “accidently” kneeing Steve below the belt. “Family Video, this is Robin. How can-” her customer service voice being interrupted by a squeal. Steve looks over at her with a raised eyebrow. “Rob! Guess who asked me out on a date!?” Robin frowns and mouths “Y/N” to Steve. He flings himself to the phone, eager to know the gossip. Robin rolls her eyes but asks “what was that?” into the receiver, Steve gives her a thumbs up as a thank you and presses his ear to the other side of the phone. “Eddie asked me on a date for tomorrow!” Robin and Steve both become pale. “A-and what’d you say?” stutters Robin, afraid that she already knew the answer. “Well…, I decided to follow your advice and I said yes!” Steve turns to glare at the short haired girl. “Advice?!” he mouths at her. “I- I’m very happy for you… Is this really what you want, though? Don’t just do things because I told you so!” she tries to dissuade her friend, “No, I want to go out with him! I think he just needed time, like you said; he hasn't dated anyone before and he needs to get used to all of these things.”, clearly it did not work. “Okay well, good luck on your date, call me if you need anything and be safe.” Robin needs to end this conversation before she throws up from guilt, so she hangs up the phone before Y/N can say anything else.
“What kind of bullshit advice did you give her?” Steve is beyond furious. He understands that Robin just wants to see their friend in a happy relationship but they both knew that Eddie couldn’t offer that. Not after the bullshit he puts her through. Robin is getting tired of his accusations, Y/N is a big girl, she had the opportunity to reject her advice if she didn’t agree, but she knew that she couldn’t tell Y/N’s protector that. “She just needed someone to cheer her up! How could I break her heart even more after Eddie dropped her?!” Robins, justification only angers Steve more. “Well now he has the opportunity to break her heart again.”.

Prologue/Chapter 1
October 18, 1985
“Please just do me this favor and come with us!” pleaded Y/N. There was a pause on the other end of the phone, as if he was really considering not going, but he would do anything for her. “And why do you want me to go? Aren’t Steve and Robin going?” his tone teasing. “I know Steve will try to flirt with the first girl he sees and Robin…, she and Vicky are on the rocks so we have an extra ticket… c'mon please go with me!”. He let out a disgruntled sigh, “Fine! But I’m not dancing or whatever it is you do in those kinds of concerts!”. With a squeal and a million thank yous she hangs up the phone.
Whitney Houston. Y/N had invited the resident “satanic” metal head to a Whitney Houston concert. Steve was going to see which pretty girl he could charm next, Robin was the one to bring the idea up to everyone. She had overheard last month that Vicky loved Whitney; she bought 4 tickets to her concert in Indie to try to impress her. It did not work. Vicky and Robin were not necessarily putting a name to their relationship but yesterday Robin saw her get a little too close for comfort to a jock, safe to say they are not on speaking terms. It was a slap in the face to Robin. She tried so hard and yet, she seemed to get nowhere with Vicky. Y/N and Steve tried to cheer her up, telling her that she did not need someone like that in her life. The perfect revenge would be to go to that concert, take a bunch of polaroids and show them off at school on Monday, even if she was impartial to Ms. Houston.
Y/N, on the other hand, loved Whitney, her soulful voice was the reason she was the most attracted to her. She knew Eddie didn't listen to that kind of music and going to one of those concerts would be far out of his comfort zone but she wanted to take any opportunity she could to be close to him. Pressing up to him in a cramped concert hall, while the world's greatest love songs are being sung to them would be perfect. Their relationship was odd. They were good friends, meeting through Dustin at the beginning of August but knowing of each other for years before. Before officially meeting, there were longing glances and lingering touches in passing. Eddie had thought she was the prettiest girl when he had first seen her 2 years ago. She looked like a raging bitch but was entirely soft spoken and gentle, he was intrigued. Y/N on the other hand, made quick friends with Robin, she was the new girl and needed guidance. Coming from another state in the middle of sophomore year meant that she was being interrogated by each established clique to see where she would fit. She had a pretty face, the popular kids ready to corrupt her and add her to their rotating roster. Yet she was incredibly intelligent, far too intelligent to be manipulated like they liked to do to each other. Robin quickly gravitated towards her and they have been best friends ever since. After Robin got a job at Scoops, and she befriended Steve, they became a trio. An unlikely one at that, Steve was one of the popular kids that actually liked Y/N when she first arrived, he just didn't talk to her. Being friends with Steve meant being friends with a slew of middle schoolers, one of them being Dustin Henderson. The boy loved Y/N. He liked to call Steve and Y/N mom and dad, respectively. Dustin met his idol in Eddie, quickly adding him to the party and the rest is history.
Eddie was everything to her, the first boy who took genuine interest in her, though she had been warned about him. Aside from the bad rep he got from being a “freak”, the girl’s locker room was buzzing about what he could do and who he had done. It was Hawkin’s best kept secret. Every girl secretly wanted him for what he could offer but many fell for him. He was not the relationship type and made it clear to anyone who wanted to bed him. Yet, Y/N saw more in him than just a skilled body, she saw the kindness he showed his sheep, his passion for D&D and his music. She felt first hand how it is to be in his circle of friends, how funny and genuine he is. It was entirely too easy to develop a crush on him, but she was still wary of his intentions.
A rapid knock at her window pulled her back from her walk down memory lane. She quickly made her way over to the window to see Eddie. He adorned a cheeky smile that showed off his dimples. She opened the window and stepped to the side to let him in. With agility, he climbed the garden ladder up to her second story bedroom. He had been coming to visit her for a few weeks now, not getting enough of her at school.
“And to what do I owe this lovely surprise?”, the sarcasm dripping from her tone makes him smirk, “I just wanted to see your beautiful face, sweet cheeks, that's all.” she simply rolls her eyes and smiles. The flirtatious undertone of their meeting was not lost in them, they knew how this would look to anyone else, but to them, they are just friends catching up.
He flops on her bed and stares up at her form, still by the window but now facing him. Her short shorts and oversized Fleetwood Mac shirt did very little to hide her curves. He could stare at her all day, admiring every hill and valley of her figure. “So, when is this concert and where, you can't invite me somewhere and not give me the details, you could be a murder for all I know!”, the cheeky smile has not left his face, yet she gives him a deadpan look. “If I was a murderer, then why’d you come to my house, where there are no witnesses, a bit dumb don’t you think?” She walks to her bed, her eyes never leaving his, and sits on the edge, close to his thigh. The heat radiating from him makes her shiver slightly and he lets out a chuckle, “ you mean to tell me we are all alone in your big house?”. They had been over this before, he had been trying to get her to kiss him, show him her boobs, anything, but she always declined.  “You know our deal, Eds. I'm not doing anything without a proper date.” she sighs, mentally exhausted from the constant back and forth. Just like he had a reputation, she did too, she was a prude. She had been asked out by a few boys in her 2 years in Hawkins High but she declined each time. She knew what they were after and she wasn’t ready for that, she was a hopeless romantic and she would not lose her virginity to just anyone. With Eddie it was different, he was different, they made stupid jokes and dirty comments towards each other but he cared for her. He remembered little things about her, things that most people overlooked. He was attentive and loving towards her, she was hooked. “I know, I know! I just like to tease you.” He gives her a small smile. “The concert is tomorrow in Indianapolis, we want to leave around noon to get there on time and grab something to eat before.” he nods, “Steve is driving by the way.” she interjects nervously, he frowned.
Now, Eddie was not jealous of Steve, but Steve had everything. Steve had money and was well liked by most of the town. Steve was friends with the most important people of his life before he was. Dustin and Y/N had a bond with him that he will never understand. For her though, he would suck it up.
It was a little past midnight when Eddie finally left Y/N’s house. They talked for about 2 hours, about everything and nothing at all. They enjoyed each other's company but they had to get everything ready for their little road trip to the concert. The next day, Steve called her to make sure that he would go pick up Eddie as well, they talked more about Robin and how to help her out of her funk. Y/N started getting ready, showered, picked out her outfit, did her hair and make-up. She looked stunning, she hoped that Eddie would think so too.
Worry started creeping up on her. What if this is too much, her skirt is a bit too short, what if he gets the wrong idea? No one knew, for sure, the nature of their relationship. When they hung out as a group there was a tension that was almost suffocating. Their innuendos and dirty comments were common occurrences but they were becoming more targeted at one another. They always happened to sit next to each other and make conversation with one another, essentially shutting everyone else out. Y/N would ALWAYS ride with Eddie, when she used to always ride with Steve, they enjoyed their alone time. Everyone knew, but not for sure.
Dustin was in denial, he always envisioned Y/N with Steve, they always took care of him together. That's not to say that Dustin thought Eddie was a bad guy, quite the opposite, he was his idol but he knew. Dustin knew Eddie’s reputation, he knew that he didn't do relationships and he also knew that Y/N had a tender heart. He knew it wouldn't end well. Eddie and Y/N also knew of Dustin’s disapproval of whatever it was that they had, he wasn't subtle with his frowns and glares, so they decided to keep their private meetings to themselves. For all anyone knew, they only hung out as a group.
Steve was due to pick her up at any moment, she put her purse together, made sure she had her wallet and her keys before she skipped down stairs to wait for him. Before she made it all the way down stairs, she heard a knock. Walking quickly, she opened the door, there stood a handsome and chipper Steve, she could see a sad and slumped Robin in the passenger seat of his BMW. Looking back up at Steve, she grinned and greeted him. “All set to go?”, he questioned her, taking her in. He always thought she was pretty but he was so head over heels over Nancy, that he never cared to talk to her until he became friends with Robin. “I’m ready! Remember, we need to pick up Eddie!” she chirped away as she locked her door, her mother probably not coming home until late from her shift at the hospital.
They got in the car and drove off towards the trailer park. With kind words and stupid jokes, they cheered up Robin before making it to Eddie's house. Before Y/N could go knock on Eddie's door, Steve honked his horn, signaling their arrival. Eddie came out of the trailer, handsome as ever. A plain black t-shirt adorned his chest, matching his ripped skinny jeans and leather jacket. He made his way to Steve's car and sat in the backseat with Y/N and they were off to Indianapolis. The car ride was long and full of arguing over music and Eddie annoying Steve by asking “Are we there yet?”. They finally made it to Indie with an hour before the concert started so they stopped at a nearby burger joint. Everyone ordered and enjoyed their meals, making jokes and small talk, clearly needing to leave the confinement of the cramped car. When the bill came, Eddie paid for himself and Y/N, causing Steve to raise a brow, he always paid for her. Robin was not surprised. Y/N told her everything, she was the only one that knew for sure, the feelings that Y/N held for Eddie. She thought it was cute, but she was cautious of Eddie at first, she knew his type. Yet the more she saw them interact, the more genuine he seemed. She was rooting for them, if she couldn’t be happy with her crush, she was happy Y/N could be with hers. The ride to the venue had them buzzing, even Eddie who was not a fan. They entered the venue and raced to get as close as possible to the stage. The venue was packed, making them stand VERY close together, Eddie and Y/N taking full advantage of that. They were having a good time, enjoying the music and taking lots of Polaroids, as per requested by Robin. At some point a very drunk man kept bumping into Y/N, nearly spilling his beer on her. Eddie was quick to pull her into him, putting her in front of him, as if shielding her. The girl’s face was getting hot, he put one arm loosely over her upper chest and swayed with her as “Saving All My Love For You” played. This is the life she wanted, to feel this loved and protected by him. The happiness was radiating off of her, Steve looked at them but didn't comment, especially after Robin stomped on his foot for staring. As the concert came to a close and they started filing out of the venue and to Steve's car, the group talked about what they liked the most of the concert, Eddie not letting go of Y/N’s hand. When they got to Steve’s car Eddie opened the door for Y/N. The car ride back was quiet, everyone tired from standing. Eddie noticed her tired eyes and scooted closer to her, she put her head on his shoulder and her right hand on his left leg and drifted to sleep.
Tumblr media
A gentle shake of her shoulder startled her awake. She looked around in a panic, she was in Steve's car, the gentle hand was adorned with chunky rings, Eddie. “We’re at your house.” he whispered gently. Afraid of startling her. She nodded her head softly and sluggishly gathered her things, whispering a goodbye and thank you to Steve and Eddie, as Robin was still asleep. The boys made sure she got into her house safely before they drove off. Steve looked at Eddie through the rearview mirror, he was skeptical of him. Y/N was like another best friend to him, he wanted to ask what Eddie's intentions were but he knew how that would look. Steve liked Eddie enough, Henderson made sure to express his admiration for him, so he couldn’t be too bad. Right? He seemed to like Y/N, as more than a friend, Steve just wanted her to be happy. She deserved to be with someone who would love her, he wasn't too sure that Eddie would be able to do that for her. He’s heard things. Tires hit gravel, startling Robin awake. “No, take me home first!” she groaned out, Steve was ready to get rid of Eddie first, not wanting to ask any questions. “I’m already on my way to drop off Munson, I'll take you after.” he mumbled out, Robin grumbled something under her breath and went back to sleep. Steve parked the car in front of Eddie's trailer and Eddie got out giving a silent nod to Steve as a thank you.
Steve can’t take it anymore, if anyone knows anything, it would be Robin. He calls her name and shakes her awake, Robin tries to swat at him. “I need to ask you something, wake up.” he begs her. “What? Can’t this wait for later, dingus?” she mumbles. He ignores her question and starts driving toward her house “What's going on with Y/N and Munson? Are they like a thing?”Robin sits up quickly. “I don't know what you are talking about,” she says unconvincingly. Steve gives her a look, “Fine, Y/N likes him, and he seems to really like her!” Robin sighs, feeling relief flood her, a weight being lifted off her shoulders. “I don't trust him, not with her.” he takes a big breath and she looks at him as if he grew 3 heads, “I think he’s being real, he’s gentle with her.” Robin tries to reason with him. “We’re all gentle with her, it doesn't mean anything. Something’s not right and I don't know what.” his negativity angers and baffles Robin. “Just because you like her and she likes him, doesn't make him a bad guy!” she exclaims but she’s wrong, Steve doesn't like her, not like that. “I’m just looking out for her! Do you want her first relationship to be with him? You've heard what they say about him!” he explains as he parks in front of her house. “Whatever. Just don't ruin this for her.” she gets her things and slams the car door, leaving Steve alone with his thoughts.

Friends to lovers? We’ll see!
Warnings: None, I don't think. If you think of any, feel free to tell me and I'll add them!
WC: almost 3K
A/N: This is loosely based off of something that happened/ is happening to me, so this is very self-indulgent. This is the first fic I have ever published so please be gentle with me, it's also not proofread lol. I would love to hear your feedback!

Okay but what about a fic where Eddie breaks up with reader to “save” her from himself. He thinks that he can’t give her the things she wants in life, he thinks they want different things, he thinks that she wants a stable life, marriage, a big house, kids and he doesn’t want that. He thinks that he can’t be a good husband or a good father so he breaks up with her despite her begging him not to leave her but he does and he can’t stand himself for doing it so he runs away after telling her that he can’t give her the things that she wants but what he doesn’t know is that she only wants him, she doesn’t care about what life they would live, she only wants Eddie.
Years later he comes back to Hawkins, expecting her to be married to someone, have kids and live the life he thought she wanted but that’s not the case. She is all alone, unable to fall for someone else because she still loves the man that left her heartbroken, still waiting for him to come back home to her and his heart drops to his stomach when he realizes the mistake he made, especially when he sees the heartbroken look on her face when she sees the pretty girl by his side; his fiancée. The girl he is going to marry, the girl he is going to buy a house with, the girl he is going to have kids with.
Imagine the pain reader would be in when she realizes that he couldn’t give her these things but he is ready to give them to another girl now.
And imagine the regret and guilt Eddie would feel when he realizes that she waited for him all these years, that she still wants him even after all the pain he put her through.

crossings |mafia!eddie munson x reader|
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
prompt: everything is new and exciting with you and eddie, but joyce can't help but worry about you.
contains: mentions of suggestions to drugs and violence. an au of eddie in the mafia so crime and dark-ish themes. nothing graphic in this, mainly just fluff and a little angst. I'll put a warning on here anyways of 18+ or read at your own discretion.
It started as a necklace. A simple diamond necklace on a dainty gold chain. Reserved and classy, but still far too expensive than you could afford on a receptionist’s budget. Joyce furrowed her brows when you first started wearing it, nestled between your collar bones delicately, glimmering in the sunlight when you moved. It was too pristine to be second hand, but still, she figured it might’ve been a gift, shaking it off.
Then came the bracelets. Three gold stacked bracelets very chic; very expensive. She only knew that because she saw them in the magazines, dangling off some tiny model’s wrist with the price inscribed in tiny writing off to the side. She’d snorted loudly, flipping the page with a huff. Who on earth would pay that price for a bracelet? One that could get you a decent car? Yet, you strolled in on Thursday with them adorned on your wrist- again, understated and simple, nonchalant. Like you weren’t carrying some people’s salary on your wrist.
Handbags, earrings, rings, shoes all followed. Every piece more expensive than the next. Joyce had started to wonder if you were embezzling from the bank, stealing out of the drawers. Until she saw him.
Eddie Munson strolled into the bank, which wasn’t unusual, but this time he wasn’t here for Charles. Oh no, he was here for you.
“Hi, Joyce.” Eddie greeted with a smile. He was always so polite, it made her stomach twist knowing that behind that alluring smile was a dangerous man. “How’re you today?”
“I can’t complain.” Joyce smiled back politely. “How are you?”
“Good.” Eddie said cooly, his eyes flicked behind her, lighting up. “Better now. I got a hot date for lunch.”
Joyce blushed at the information. “Oh? Who-“
She saw you giggle, purse- a new designer bag fresh off the runway- slung over your shoulder. You wrapped your arms around Eddie in greeting, squealing when he pressed kisses into your cheek. The way his dimples deepened, creasing deep into his cheeks, eyes lighting up when he saw you; it felt very sweet. Joyce almost forgot who he was for a moment. More importantly what he was capable of.
"I'll be back in an hour, Joyce. I put the sign up." You beamed at her, your happiness nearly infectious when you smiled over at her. Joyce hesitated for a moment, watching Eddie sweetly place his hand on your waist.
"Have a good lunch!" You called over your shoulder, pressed into Eddie's side, pushing the glass door open for you to step through.
Eddie turned, lifting a hand in a wave towards Joyce, a kind gesture that shocked her. She could barely raise her own hand back, watching them scamper out the door- two young kids in love. She remembered being like that before, the insatiable feeling to be with each other at all times. The whirlwind of love and adoration that followed, sweeping you up on a cloud of ecstasy, fogging your judgement.
Joyce could barely touch her sandwich, staring at the plastic bag in front of her. She ignored the other chatter around her, coworkers busily clambering about their days and droning subjects she couldn't bring herself to engage with.
She knew you had no way of knowing, you couldn't have. You weren't from Hawkins, you were Nancy's college roommate, brought here because of a job- this job. She wondered if you had told Nancy about Eddie. She had half a mind to ring Jonathan and ask, insist he tell his fiancé what her friend is up to; who her friend is hanging around.
Everyone knew the Munson's. Eddie's father, Wayne, Eddie, his mother. The distaste, snarl that usually followed with the name was all Eddie grew up with. His hoodlum of a father, who was a delinquent around Hawkins, got his mother killed. Wayne who was forced to take the boy in, and the boy. The boy they outcasted all his life, mocked and ridiculed, now, held all the cards. He had the power. When people said "Munson" now, they didn't snarl or scoff. No, it followed with wide eyes, in a low tone, turning to make sure no one was listening. That was whenever anyone dared to say anything about Eddie at all, content on pretending they were unaware of the dangers that happened in Hawkins.
Eddie was always a good kid, and even now, he took care of his city. He had established terror in the hearts of all his citizens, enough to keep them quiet and docile, let him keep doing what he needed to do; but he was always the first one to help when they were in trouble. No one came for his city, for his home, for his things.
Joyce knew Eddie was responsible for the boy's home being rebuilt. He'd had a 'meeting' with Charles and a few other big names around town after a few kids at the children's home had become sick from the lack of heating that winter. The children's home had requested renovations, but the city pushed it back, until it became a top priority practically overnight. Joyce knew it was more than a coincidence that it happened to become priority after Eddie's meeting.
Still, she worried that you didn't know the danger. Joyce was a wreck all day, contemplating if she should say something to you. She knew it was a risk, if you reported back to Eddie.
Joyce watched you all day. When you'd returned from your lunch with Eddie, he'd walked you back to your desk, all dimpled grins and tossing you a wink that left you flushing before he left. He promised to pick you up later, walking away with a small wave. "Have a good day, ladies." He'd purred lowly.
Joyce's eyes flickered from the clock on the wall, back towards you. You'd begun packing up, neatly filing papers away, and smoothing your agenda for the next day out. She bit her lip, rolling it in contemplation, pencil bouncing on her desk.
Five o'clock- closing time. You were already standing, peering out the window to see Eddie's Bugatti below. Joyce followed your gaze, shoving her own things in her purse.
"Wait!" Joyce called, much more urgent than she meant it to be. She called your name just as frantic, stopping you in the doorway.
"Um, could I talk to you for a second?" Joyce stammered, hands trembling when she shoved her things into her bag.
Your brows furrowed gently. "Yeah, of course. Are you alright?" You asked, tilting your head to the side. "Did I miss something in the paper work? I thought I stamped all the envelopes, but if I missed one I'll-"
"No, sweetie, it's not that." Joyce gave you a small smile, but her heart hammered so fiercely in her chest she could hear it in her ears.
Joyce pushed the door open, gently leading you outside. She caught the eyes of her coworkers, wide eyes and heads shaking in warning. They knew. Everyone knew. But what they didn't know was why Joyce would approach you with the subject. Put herself at that own kind of risk.
Joyce felt her stomach squeeze, turning to meet your confused gaze. "Joyce, is everything alright? Is it about the wedding? I told you Nancy can be a little stubborn about details, but if you're worried about something, I'll talk to her."
Joyce shook her head, eyes trailing behind you. The large ferns outside blocked her view, but she could still see him. Black button down, rolled sleeves, leaned up against the car finishing his cigarette.
"Sweetie, I-I..." Joyce let out a straggled breath. "What are you doing?" She asked lowly, eyes meeting yours cautiously.
Your brows furrowed. "What?" You asked. "Joyce, are you feeling ok? Do I need to call Jonathan or Will-"
"No," Joyce sighed heavily, placing her hands on your shoulders. It felt so maternal, shocking you a little. "What are you doing with Eddie?" She asked finally.
There was a silence between you, filling the space in a buzzing, defining tone. You blinked at her carefully. "Eddie?" You asked.
Joyce nodded fiercely. "Eddie... Sweetie, I know you're not from here, but-but Eddie... Eddie is not- he's-" She stuttered, shaking her head at herself, frustrated at her fumbling words. "There's things in Hawkins that are dangerous, ok? We all know it, but we don't know it, understand?"
Your face fell slightly, lips pursing slightly. You looked over your shoulder towards Eddie through the glass doors. Joyce's breath hitched. "And-And Eddie he's into those things." She said slowly, eyes watching you carefully. "Do you understand what I'm saying?"
You gave her a soft smile, hands arching up to lay over hers, squeezing them gently. "Joyce, I understand." You nodded. "But Eddie is a very sweet guy."
Joyce blinked at you, in disbelief. She said your name in exasperation, but you held your hand up. "Joyce, I appreciate your wanting to worry for me, to look out for me, but," You sighed gently, looking over at Eddie. "I'm a big girl. I've got it handled."
"He could hurt you." Joyce muttered low, fingers squeezing you lightly in panic.
"He won't." You said firmly, head nodding back at her.
"Honey, I don't think you know what you're-"
"I don't think you know." You snapped, a little more defensive than you meant it to. The fear on her face at your tone, flinching back at the words made your heart drop. You sighed heavily, rubbing your temple.
You took a step forward towards her, cautious and holding your hand up in truce. "I know that you know some of Eddie's life, but you don't know Eddie." You gave her a sincere look. "Not like I know Eddie, and I can promise you, if I felt like I was in the slightest bit of danger, I wouldn't be with him. You don't know him like I know him."
Joyce didn't reply, mouth uncomfortably dry, heart beating far too fast in her chest. She felt like her knees might get out.
You gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze, offering her a small smile. "Thanks for looking out for me, Joyce, but I promise I'm ok." You turned, seeing Eddie checking his watch, eyes now watching the two of you inside.
You turned, waving at Joyce over your shoulder, pushing the door open. "Have a good one, Joyce! See you tomorrow!" You called cheerfully.
Joyce watched in slight horror, confused and awed when you wrapped your arms around Eddie's neck, his own gripping your waist, pulling you into a sweet, passionate kiss. He kissed you like he hadn't seen you in years.
He held the door open for you, letting you slide in before jogging around to the other side. He could see Joyce still staring, watching in amazement from behind the glass. His chest tightened, the carnal, protective need washing through his veins.
"What took you so long, baby?" Eddie asked, peeling off from the curb. "What were you talking to Joyce about?"
"The wedding. Nancy will not finalize details on anything, and Joyce is worried sick." You rolled your eyes playfully. "She wants me to talk to Nance, and I told her I'd try, but you know how Nancy can be? She's so stubborn and the more you push her, the more she'll dig her heels in."
Eddie relaxed, eyes flickering over to you gently. "She wasn't bothering you?" He asked carefully.
You furrowed your brows at him. "No." You giggled. "Just wanting me to play miracle worker for the wedding."
"Good." Eddie muttered, reaching his hand over the console to hold yours. "You remember what I said? You let me know if anyone starts bothering you." He brought your hand to his mouth, pillowy soft lips brushing your knuckles. It was so romantic, it had you giggling, positively giddy and drunk in love.
You leaned over, nose nuzzling into his clean shaved cheek, still smelling the nicotine on his lips when you kissed him sweetly. He slowed at the stop light, hands wrapping around your jaw to pull you closer, kissing you properly. When you pulled apart, your eyes were dazzling up at him, taking in his lopsided smile.
You knew there were two sides to Eddie. You knew there was. reason people feared him. You knew Joyce was right to warn you, to look out for you. You would do the same in her shoes. You wouldn't be able to understand either from an outsider's perspective.
They didn't know the Eddie you did. The Eddie that smothered you in so much affection, not just expensive material things, but sweet words that left your skin blushed with praise. He was passionate, about his business, yes, but about you too. An old school, intense type of love that you only saw on the screens. He was gentle with you, showing you a side of himself no one else saw.
You didn't want anyone else to. Selfishly, you liked that it was all yours. For you, and you only. Eddie was yours. Your scary man that everybody else feared, but not you. No for you, he was yours. Sweet and caring and protective; all yours.
You'd let them have their judgments. Their silent fears and worries about your sanity, about your safety. It was better that way, for both of you. You'd let them have their thoughts about Eddie, and you wouldn't try to change them, because that meant potential issues that neither of you wanted.
You'd let them think you were just with him for the lavish gifts. You'd let them think that you were insane. You'd let them think that Eddie was a threat to you. That he would hurt you or you'd get caught in the crossfire like his mother. You knew they couldn't help it, it was so easy to judge you and him silently, removed as far away from the relationship as they could. Yet the still casted their judgements in hushed tones and fleeting looks, too scared to speak on them, but too indulgent not to at least determine the outcome of your relationship. Mourn a fate that hadn't even happened. Predict a repeat of history without the facts.
"History repeating itself," They'd mutter to their friends in the quiet of their own privacy, head down but eyes cutting when the two of you would pass.
It was so easy to assume that, to brush it off that you'd both suffer the fate of his parents before him. Easy to judge when no one knew the facts or the truth. Opinions are easy to make with one sided, skewed facts. They were too scared to really try and know, to even try and see. But you supposed that was ok. They didn't need to know anyways.
Besides, none of them knew Eddie. Just like none of them knew you. Not the way you knew each other.
