Brainstorm...
In our first brainstorm we discussed all the makeshift ways we listen to music in the shower...
Some group members claimed to use a plastic baggy to prevent their phones from getting water damaged.
Other group members said they put their phones in cups in order to amplify sound over the noise of the shower.
We decided that we want to make a water-resistant amplifier that you can use in the shower using household materials, and came up with the following sketch…

Our Approach
With a little inspiration from Google, we came across this homemade amplifier. We knew that was the direction we wanted to take but had to figure out how we could make it waterproof. We brainstormed some more and thought why not wrap the amplifier with Duct tape. We then mentioned that we’d noticed people on vacation using these heavy duty Ziploc bags for their phones while in the ocean/pool. So we thought why not use a Ziploc bag to protect the phone. We knew we didn’t want to have the amplifier sitting on the floor in the shower, so we began to think of where else we could locate it. At first, we thought of using suction cups on the back to stick it to the wall, but from some of our experiences, the suction cups aren't strong enough to hold the weight and don’t last as long as you’d like it to. After eliminating that idea we thought why not use a hanger? We could attach it to the amplifier and hang it from the shower head, which will support the weight while maximizing space.
After feeling confident in our brainstorming and reaching our final design we began constructing our little masterpiece!

Step One: Eat all of the Pringles from the can*. Clean out crumbs from the empty can and remove the bottom of the Pringles can using an X-acto knife
Step Two: Trace the one end of the Pringle’s can onto each Solo cup. After you’re done tracing use the X-acto knife to cut the circles out. Tip: Flatten the cup when tracing for a more accurate and better fit. We found this out the hard way (i.e. many Solo cups were harmed in the making of this project)
*undoubtedly the most important step

Step Three: Wrap the Pringles can, Solo cups and hanger with Duct tape. Wrapping the can was harder than you would think, so make sure you share the Pringles with your friends in return for their help with this. You will probably need someone to hold the materials still while you wrap.

Step Four: Measure the phone width and place the Pringles can horizontally on the table, mark the size you need for the phone in the centre of the Pringles can with a marker then use the X-acto knife to cut the slot out.
*One shortcoming of our device is that the phone slot is not universal, some cellphones may be too wide, thin, or thick to fit in the opening we created.
Step Five: Now attach both cups to the ends of the Pringles can through the holes you cut out.

Step Six: Place the hanger on the back of the cups. Make sure the hanger is centered and the corners are even on the bottom of each solo cup. Take duct tape and place over the hanger wire securing it to the bottom of the cups.

Step Seven: Take the small Ziploc bag and X-acto knife and create a small incision at the bottom of bag where the phone speaker will be.
Step Eight: Place phone in small Ziploc bag, remove the air and seal tightly. Then place the phone in the slot, hang the amplifier from your shower head and press play!

Trial & Error
1) One challenge we faced was linked to the manufacturing of our amplifier. We wanted to ensure that the phone would be sealed from water to ensure there would be no water damage but were faced with the sound being muffed from being enclosed in the bag. After a quick brainstorm, we decided to make a small slit with the X-Acto knife at the bottom of the bag where the sound could project easily through to the Pringles can to the cups.
2) Another challenge we later realized was the fact that the durability of the amplifier would dissipate over time, leaving the speakers for temporary use only. Even wrapping the speakers with duct tape would limit the lifespan of the amplifier. Over time the adhesiveness of the duct tape would decrease, causing the structure of the Pringle’s can to become flimsy since it is made of cardboard. This would jeopardize the quality of sound and overall risk the durability of the speakers.
3) One of the biggest challenges we faced during this project was actually linked to the blog. After submitting the first video to our blog which featured the final product playing a song in the running shower we were hit with a notification that the video had been flagged for potential violation of guidelines and that it would be reviewed and approved if appropriate. After a few hours, the link seemed to be approved and working accordingly. We then later noticed it had stopped working again. We have come to two possibilities why this may have occurred, we think it may have to do with the song resulting in a copyright strike and/or also the video being flagged for adult content. We came to that conclusion when we did some digging, an article posted in December 2018, announced that Tumblr is flagging all adult content on its site and anything related to porn, nudity, sexually explicit acts and interpretation of such will be removed. But users are reporting that the algorithm is flagging posts that aren't related to but may (according to the algorithm) interpret sex, nudity etc. So with this ban and hypersensitive algorithm, the shower video showing the amplifier in full use could be linked to the explicit ban. Our solution was to upload both videos to Youtube and provide links to them via a URL.
