The Aloha Concert is such a marker in time and for so many reasons. Examining these historical milestones beyond their quantitative significance is so important, even now 51 years later. The special was the first to be broadcast worldwide on January 14th, 1973.
Book excerpt from Elvis: Destined to Die Young:
“Deterioration awaits us all over decades. For Elvis, it took only a few short years,” recalled hairdresser Larry Geller. For many, the Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite concert, in January of 1973, was that last shining moment for Elvis. He was already suffering from multiple diseases and relying on an increasing amount of prescription medication to sustain being Elvis Presley. The Aloha concert was simply the last time he appeared to be healthy. The internal deterioration of his eyes, his colon, his kidneys, his heart, his lungs and his immune system were all well underway, some since birth. Some, like his bowel problems, Elvis had masterfully been hiding for decades.
The Aloha concert was the Colonel’s brainchild, inspired by President Richard Nixon’s visit to China in 1972. During Nixon’s week-long visit, coverage was broadcast live via satellite and gave Americans the first images out of China in over two decades. It became known as “the week that changed the world.”
When the entire world watched, Elvis wanted to represent the country he loved. “He came up with the American eagle,” said costume designer Bill Belew. “It was one of only three times in all the times that we were together that he ever made a request.” Elvis’ famous jumpsuit featured an American eagle on the chest, back and belt. Another stretched across the iconic cape, jeweled in red, blue and gold.
Broadcast via satellite on January 14, 1973, history was made. The concert was viewed in forty countries across Asia and Europe and was watched by an estimated 1.5 billion people. “To put it in proper perspective, for a moment in time, a quarter of the world’s population stopped whatever they were doing to watch an Elvis Presley concert,” said Memphis Mafia member Sonny West.
Viewing in the United States was delayed until April due to a conflict with the Super Bowl being held on January 14. The concert became NBC’s most-watched program of the year, with 51 percent of the viewing audience. The soundtrack was also a huge success. It sold four million copies and soared to the number one spot on both the pop and country charts. After the success of the event, the Colonel felt proud of himself and his only client, which prompted him to write a rather emotional letter to Elvis. “I’ve always known that when I do my part, you always do yours in your own way and in your own feeling in how to do it best,” it read. “That’s why you and I are never at each other when we are doing our work in our own best way possible at all times.” The letter was an indication of the deal they had. The deal that was at the core of their partnership—the Colonel made the money. Elvis made the music. Elvis provided.
Although Elvis was also happy with the results, he did not feel a sense of euphoria. “That night, after the satellite show, he was totally wiped out,” recalled Sonny West. His exhaustion was for good reason. It was only partly due to putting on an incredible show that required weeks of planning and days of rehearsals. Elvis was exhausted because for the six weeks leading up to the Aloha concert, a Las Vegas doctor had him on a crash diet of prepackaged, dried foods consisting of five hundred calories a day, with the odd addition of a daily injection of urine from a pregnant woman.
According to Healthline, “The greatest dangers associated with a five-hundred calorie diet relate to vitamin and mineral deficiencies.” There is also the risk of muscle loss, metabolic changes, malnutrition, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue and gallstones. These types of diets can cause a variety of health problems and Elvis did not need more health problems. Today these diets come with an additional warning stating that the dangers increase for people with blood clotting problems, heart problems, liver problems, kidney disease, bleeding ulcers or those that have had a stroke. Elvis was the last person who could have benefited health-wise from this extreme diet. Of course, in the 1970s, crash diets were a fad even though there was little research behind them regarding either the benefits or the dangers.
It was effective though, in that Elvis dropped twenty-five pounds for the performance. It is difficult to know this and then not look at the Aloha concert in a different light. Elvis was not a healthy man in peak shape. He was a malnourished man, performing at peak, with little food to properly fuel his body or his brain. Elvis was quite literally running on empty. Viewing the concert, it is also noticeable how much Elvis kept squinting and closing his eyes due to the glaucoma and light-sensitivity issues.
Dr. Nick was aware of the dieting and hard work that went into the Aloha concert. “I asked Elvis what he thought about the phenomenal year he was having and the historic feat he had just accomplished. He did not answer; he just stared into space,” recalled Dr. Nick. “After the long days and sleepless nights performing and recording for the event, Elvis was totally depleted.”
The Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite concert has become the same kind of marker for Elvis that 1954 was for his mother, Gladys. It was the beginning of a four-year period of degenerative health. It’s easy to say the divorce proceedings that year started Elvis’ downward spiral to an early death in 1977, but that wouldn’t explain all the known ailments he had prior to 1973. The Aloha concert is a marker in time that hindsight provides. The next time Elvis appeared on television, it was four years later in a concert special for CBS. He barely resembled the person from the Aloha concert. Recorded in June of 1977, the CBS special aired after his death.
