Vladimir Bekhterev 1857 - 1927 was a Russian neurologist and the father of objective psychology. He is best known for discovering the role of the hippocampus in memory, his study of reflexes, and Bekhterev’s disease, a quite severe arthritis of the spine where the spinal joints close to the pelvis become inflamed and join together. He was also a scientific competitor with Ivan Pavlov with regard to the studying of conditioned reflexes.
Bekhterev died in suspicious circumstances, including rumours that Joseph Stalin ordered his death. Bekhterev performed medical tests on Stalin shortly before his death which was considered to be politically damaging to the position of the future Soviet dictator (Stalin did not become full dictator in 1928). The lack of clear evidence either way, a natural death or a premature death on the orders of Joseph Stalin, means that rumours remain. A century on from Bekhterev's death further evidence seems unlikely to be coming forward.

'Tronie of a bearded man' painted in 1650 by Dutch painter Govaert Flinck (1615 - 1660). Though Wikipedia credit the painting to 'school of Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens' (1577-1640). Take your pick of who to credit it to. Oddly, who to credit a painting to has never come up before now, over more than ten years and over 10,000 images.

A pinterest/Instagram orphan which appears to come from here. One of the less said comments about the internet is how it allows more mislabelled and misattributed information to travel further than ever before. Still we can try to get better labels for what we share.....

Daniel Clement Dennett III (1942 – 2024) was an American philosopher and cognitive scientist. His research centred on the philosophy of mind, science, and biology as each relates to evolutionary biology and cognitive science.
A vocal and literate atheist, Dennett has been described as 'One of the Four Horsemen of The New Atheism', along with Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens. They seem to be one horseman down now.

'Head of Ciociaro' as painted by Italian painter Plinio Nomellini (1866 – 1943), a Divisionist painter which is the say that the available colours for painting with were divided and sequenced for use like so. It was a sub-branch of neo-impressionism where part of it's effect was to sharply divide critics into 'pro' and 'anti'.

Eminent homosexual Lytton Strachey (1880-1932), as photographed at his ease by Dora Carrington (1893-1932). Strachey was the least accomplished of his literary family until he wrote 'Eminent Victorians' and changed to rules for writing biographies. Please left click here for more about that rule changing book a century on, in The Guardian. What not to say about about Lytton Strachey; 'It takes one degenerate to expose, or cover up, degeneracy in another.'.

'A Poor Beggar' as painted in 1823 by Russian romantic painter Vasily Tropinin (1776-1857). Much of his life was spent as a serf; he didn't attain his freedom until he was over forty years old. Three of his more important works are a portrait of Alexander Pushkin and paintings called The Lace Maker and The Gold-Embroideress.
Vasily was born as a serf of Count Munnich in the village Korpovo of Novgorod guberniya and then transferred to Count Morkovs as a part the dowry of the Munich's daughter. After being transferred he was sent to Saint Petersburg to become a confectioner. Instead of learning his trade as instructed Tropinin secretly attended free drawing lessons in the Imperial Academy of Arts.
