J. Warren Kerrigan
Tumblr media
Kerrigan (1879-1947) was an American silent film star and director.
He and his lover, fellow film star James Carroll Vincent(1897-1946,) lived together in Kerrigan’s home. They used the cover of Vincent pretending to be Kerrigan’s secretary and/or gardener. The two lived together until Kerrigan’s death, which left Vincent heartbroken. Vincent died the year after.

In 1934-1936, trans brothers Mark and David Ferrow of Yarmouth, UK, both transitioned at age 13 with full parental support. Mark medically transitioned first in 1939 at 17 and his brother soon followed. “Though we have been girls, we have both felt men at heart,” Mark told a reporter. Their stories show that trans youth can grow up to be happy, celebrated adults.
David lived in their hometown of Great Yarmouth, UK for the rest of his life. He became a local icon. At 15, he started selling books. He later ran a wildly successful bookshop until death in 2006, age 81, 68 years after transitioning. He had a daughter, Jan, who supported his work. The whole town adored him. Why, yes, that is a mug of his face. Mark, always passionate about art, joined the Kirby Muxlue Players troupe as a writer and traveled throughout the UK. His David Gower painting is currently in the UK’s National Portrait Gallery! His art still hangs in collections all over the country - although it’s almost never recognized as being by a trans artist. Mark married Edna Hall in 1942 and died in 1991, age 68, in Leicester. It’s important to mention that it’s unclear if both men are intersex despite the reports. At the time, it was customary for non-intersex trans people to claim intersex conditions in order to access care (e.g. Roberta Cowell). Regardless if they were trans or intersex and trans, I would hate their underreported stories to be forgotten!

WWI Christmas post card circa 1914-1918 showing a British soldier and sailor lighting each other’s cigarette (via). Back reads:
Dear Jimmy,
I never send Christmas cards if I can bell but thought I [would] send this now while I remember. It cost 75 pence from (I think) Jeremy’s in Oxford, now closed. It came from the ‘military’ box, which shows one should leave no stone unturned!
[Yours], Walter
If you have it already you can send it back to me for Christmas!

Here are some images of the queer scene in 1920's Berlin.
After World War I, which ended in 1918, an age of great liberation flourished in all Europe. In Germany, particularly in Berlin, the decade of 1920 saw the birth of an open, visible and proud queer culture.
The queer community was present in clubs, balls, parties, public spaces and events in the city, and although the moral of the time did not approve of them, their explosion in neighborhoods with great cultural movement visibilized their lifestyle. Magazines in German with articles about sex and gender were printed and distributed in all Berlin.
After the crash of 1929, and with Adolf Hitler's access to power, the German nightlife, its celebration of diversity and love and all the fun of queer clubs were over, but the Golden Age would never be forgotten in Berlin as the times got harder and harder

Ignacio de la Torre y Mier was an important Mexican politician who was also married to Amada Díaz, daughter of the dictator Porfirio Díaz. In 1901, he was arrested with a group of men who took part of a dance, some of which were dressed in women’s clothes. This action, at the time, was considered extremely immoral. Due to his political position, de la Torre was protected by the authorities and was not judged like his companions, who were sentenced to forced labour.

Mario Ibeas and Elisa Sánchez Loriga were the first queer couple to marry in Spain. Mario, a trans man, and Elisa, met as students shortly before Mario assumed a male identity. They fell in love, but Elisa´s parents sent her to Madrid, because they feared scandal.
after graduating, Elisa found herself teaching a school near where Mario worked, and their romance resumed. In 1901, they were married in the church of Coruña, using false papers.
neighbors knew of the identity of Mario, however, and the story soon became a scandal, written about as "the marriage without a man" in Spain and throughout Europe. Mario and Elisa fled, boarding a ship for Argentina, where they disappeared from the historical archive.
Their marriage was never annulled. I like to imagine that they lived a happy life together in Argentina, their identities unknown to all but their closest friends.
