“Disabled” is NOT a dirty word: just say it.

I’ve been wanting to talk about this ever since my roommate came home the other day and asked me about something that was brought up in one of her social service classes. In this class, they were discussing disabilities. One topic that was brought up was whether or not you should use the words “disabled” or “disability”. There were many people in this class that said no, you shouldn’t, and instead you should use words like “differently-abled” or “divergently-abled”. Through further discussion, it was made clear that all of the people saying this were not disabled. On the other hand, every single person with a disability in that class said that they would rather people simply use the word disabled. My roommate agreed with them. Since I’m disabled, my roommate asked me what my thoughts were on the topic.

For the love of fucking god, just say the word disabled. That's what I am. I am disabled. I am a person with a disability, a disabled person. Just say the word.

In my mind, the only reason someone would feel as though “disabled” was a bad or dirty word is if they themselves see the word, and in turn disabilities as a whole, in a negative light. They see being disabled as a bad thing, and thus the word is a bad word. Disability makes them uncomfortable, and so because they don't want to be uncomfortable thinking about the existence of disabled people, they don't even want to say the damn word.

I am here to tell you that 99% of disabled people just want you to use the word disabled. There is no reason to say “differently abled” or the likes. Just say disabled. Say disability. 

I am disabled and I’m not gonna shut up about it just because my existence makes you uncomfortable. You can shove it up your ass. And if you’re a social services major and the word “disability” really bothers you so much, you shouldn't be going into social service work, or nursing, or any other career that will have you interacting with disabled people.
