taking a break from tumblr
I know I said i was taking a break before, but I had to come back to see what y'all were saying about the Watcher update. Glad that a lot of y'all are accepting it (and that many of y'all who are don't plan to follow watcher anymore are being respectful about it). I am glad they have addressed all the issues with their streaming service and that all their fans will eventually have access to their content.
Still, all the toxicity this weekend has really added to my current stressful life and fucked with my head, so I am taking a break from tumblr. Hopefully when I come back, certain people will have stopped saying vile, racist shit that is in no way constructive criticism (and is actually just hateful).

Watcher made a response to the valid criticisms that communicated a better solution going forward and an apology for their mistakes. In three days, they were able to synthesize the criticisms and find a better solution. Can we agree now that they are not, and never were, horrible, irredeemable people? Nor are they rich capitalists who don’t care about their community?
They are just people, trying to make content, and do what is best for the members of their company as well as their community.
I’m very happy for the outcome as people who cannot afford the subscription will be able to continue watching. I am happy that they acknowledged the flawed presentation of the change that left audience members feeling ignored. I am happy that the creators I support are the kinds of people who listen to criticism and make changes.
As they stated, this was a lesson for them. However, it should also be a lesson to the community that we cannot jump to conclusions and moralize every issue. Demonizing people and making assumptions before even allowing them to respond is just not how the world works. That isn’t how you have good interactions with people, especially in the context of creators. Many are so far removed from the idea that they are human beings, and not the online best friends built into your phone whenever you want entertainment.
I am extremely happy for both the watcher boys and the audience who processed their feelings in mature, respectful ways and gave honest, genuine criticism.
For everyone else who decided to berate those who they disagreed with, demonize people, build narratives that blame specific people (Steven), and all around acted childish, entitled, and hateful: fuck you, you don’t deserve their content and you’re lucky your spiteful attitude didn’t turn them away from content creation all together.

Now that the watcher apology has come out the last thing I want to say is that yall really showed your worst colours during this and continue to do so, and more so than them breaking your trust I hope you're kind of aware of the fact that this was small fry, but the vitriol really wasn't the stuff yall are throwing in the comments particularly to Steven was disgusting (and probably racist let's be real). I hope you stop watching any stuff they put out cause yall suck.

so you're just going to forgive them? and just forget? After everything?
what even the hell are you going on about?
and to answer your question, yes. because i'm an adult person in my 20s. also, i've been an insensitive idiot before so I know how easy it is to do. ALSO, I like to protect my peace and their videos make me happy.
they saw the backlash. they apologized and made a compromise, so what is there to be mad about? i do not hold people i do not know to high standards. i expect them to take accountability when they do something wrong and apologize. WHICH THEY DID.
that's all.

i need everyone who swore off watcher and called for its downfall and acted like watcher committed a war crime to sit down and contemplate what led them to act that way

im sorry people calling watchers response "too late" are incredibly wrong. they took two days. the original announcement was posted on friday and then they posted their response to backlash the following monday. that's a perfectly normal respone time. they took the weekend to gauge the opinion of the fans, reformed their plan and then posted an update admitting fault. im not saying i think their response was good or bad but it was definitely quick.

Plenty of y'all fans in the Watcher fandom really gonna just gloss over the fact that you were vile to these people just a few days ago.

Given what's going on with Watcher and my complex and emotional feelings about that, (along with my renewed dislike for Taylor Swift that is fucking with my mind due to my love of her songs), I am taking a break from social media for the foreseeable future (probably not more than 2 weeks). I need to focus on college and my mental health, and there is so much toxicity in my favorite fandom right now, so being on here isnt helping.
Love y'all, take care of yourselves <3

oh, you think it’s not love because we are only friends? you think this isn’t love? do i not miss her when she’s gone. is her smile not the thing that makes me happy. do we not sit in silence together comfortably. are we both not weird and honest and joyful with each other. am i not proud of her as if she was my blood. right now she’s on vacation and seeing her glowing with the sun makes me so happy for her. i’m sorry if you don’t have something like that; a trust that’s bone-deep, a knowing that you can go for days without speaking and still pick up the place you left off. knowing if you said “help” she’d come running as fast as the wind. but it’s love, you know. found family always is.

Idk I think it’s kinda weird that ppl expect the boys to just be happy creating videos of them sitting in front of a blank wall and telling stories over a blue and yellow text. Can’t creators ever desire the need to progress???

The response to the Watcher announcement has absolutely baffled me
People are acting like they are trying this funding model in order to pay of 3rd houses and maseratis rather than keep their business afloat. I get streaming service fatigue but things are going a little far.
Like bro sorry if you like the content and want it to exist, then you agree that people should work to do that. I saw people complaining about them doing this when they have a patreon already. Did you miss the fact there are 25 employees? How do you think they're eating? If you were to do the math, assuming that every patron was buying at the highest tier, you would still not be making a "comfortable" wage in the city of los angeles, let alone covering operating costs.
Also not to sound like a boomer but $60 annually? That's the price of 9 of my special little bubble tea treats? That is 4 hours of my labour at my part-time student job (I just googled minimum wage in the USA and so I respectfully rescind this point as coming from a place of ignorant privilege as it is literally like 1/2 of the min wage here)? Times are hard and I am not going to diss anyone for sticking to a budget but y'all are acting like they are selling hand-made, artisan, single use paper towels for $100 a pop. Its disappointing not to be able to afford little treats. I empathize with that, but to see people denigrating the value of the products they were just enjoying 1 week ago because there is now a price tag on it that they think is "too high" is WILD to me.

with the current backlash theyre getting (which some is outright disgusting btw y'all should be ashamed) hopefully theyre going to backtrack on some stuff like not putting ALL future content on a paywall (tho they did say episode premiers would be uploaded on yt). wanting them to thrive but still being sad abt the all-or-almost-nothing conditions they're putting in this are both thoughts that can co-exist

People hating on Watcher can pretend to have a moral reason, but it's just the same attitude of not wanting to pay creators for their work. It's giving the same energy and entitlement as someone wanting to pay $30 for a crocheted queen blanket and getting mad when being told that wouldn't even cover the yarn.
You DON'T have to pay for their service. It's that simple. But then, yes, you won't get their product.

there are literally worse things than being in a saw trap like for instance openly expressing that you have wants and needs and are a real person
