Realized something about rpgs that no one talks about, and about my own preferences in particular.....rules light/rules heavy is not the same thing as storygame/simulational. They're two independent axes in fact. And anyway I think there are not enough rules-light games on the simulational end of the axis which is a shame. By storygame I mean a game whose systems are oriented towards the story rather than the character-world interaction as the focus, and PCs' actions follow rules that stipulate various things about like their consequences and where the story goes after each action.

I guess WoD is maybe an example of a more rules-light simulational game, bc at least the basic rules governing actions are not that complex, and are quite straightforwardly oriented towards simulating character efforts and their consequences success/failure/complication style, without extra stipulations that steer the story. But ofc it's far from rules-light taken as an entirety with all the character building mechanics and the powers and stuff.

I've been idly scrolling through this doc of a hilariously complicated game called The Burning Wheel which I will almost certainly never play bc I'm a student and ppl I know have dissertations to write and stuff but the author has a few interesting ideas that I might steal. And it's like way in the opposite quadrant of the cartesian diagram like it's totally a storygame which is kind of fascinating

No but like the "vertical farming" thing is so funny like I can't wrap my head around a modern person with a reasonable foundational knowledge of how the world works believing wholeheartedly that the only thing standing between us and a globally sufficient sustainable food system is that we need some new high tech way of growing stuff
