THIS
I know this is beating a dead horse at this point, but I just started thinking about this the other day and...
Tumblr media
How many people that were previously enemies has Sonic ACTUALLY befriended?
Like my knowledge of some old games and the handhelds ain't great, but...
There was Knuckles, who I think is the only one in the classic era.
He never really befriended Gamma in SA1, just left him to Amy.
Also he didn't befriend Chaos, just beat the anger out of him.
The next one was Shadow in SA2, although they're still kinda rivals?
I don't think Rouge counts in SA2 since she wasn't really an enemy of Sonic specifically, even in Heroes it's really Sonic and Shadow that start the fight.
Gemerl is a robot who was reprogrammed to be friendly, I wouldn't count that as "befriending someone".
Him and Jet are rivals in every Riders game, this never changes.
Blaze in Rush is someone that fought him and they became friends, so it's clear cut, she counts.
Silver in '06 does as well.
Do we count Shade from Chronicles? I think she had a boss fight. I know very little about that game but it's not canon, right?
Merlina is kinda a grey area? Like they were friends, he stopped her evil plans and was still nice to her. I don't know if in context that meets the criteria.
On top of that I don't think the Knights of the Round Table count. Sonic is there to take the swords and they work together at the end. I don't think there's any hard feelings, but don't know if this counts as "friends".
Sage could be the next example, but she's still loyal to Eggman. I don't think what they briefly shared was friendship as much as Sage wanting to save Eggman.
I haven't played Superstars but Trip doesn't even have a bossfight, does she? I don't think she counts.
Not looking at the method, just purely if they became friends down the line. Out of all of those, there's 4 total (if you count Shadow, which I do) with 1 it's complicated and 1 non-canon. That's very few when you consider how large the game cast is.
An overwhelming majority of his friends weren't ever hostile with him to begin with, like the Chaotix, Amy, Tails, Cream, Emerl, Big, ect. There's plenty of other cast members that are still have him on their shit list, like Eggman, Infinite (if he's alive), Fang, Metal, Eggman Nega, the Deadly Six...
Now I'm starting to wonder where this idea of it being a frequent even came from.

Blocking is Love, Blocking is LiFe
And no idc how questionable some people shit here are, im not their mom, and nobody is paying my ass for that shit. Like, Fuck That
No joke you guys NEED to get more comfortable blocking people. No more insulting people in public over different blorbo opinions no more making 2k long posts on how whatever ship you don't like shouldn't exist we've grown past that shit. Consistent posts about shit that make you uncomfortable? Block. Rancid blorbo opinions? Block. Is mildly annoying in your replies? Block. Pisses you off for reasons so petty you could never admit it publicly? Block. YOUR mental health will improve from not being upset 24/7, THEIR mental health will not be at risk of you lashing out because you happened to catch their posts on a bad day, and EVERYONE ELSE will benefit from not seeing the most embarrassing arguments known to man on their dash. "Oooh but they didn't deserve it-" dude you're presumably running a personal blog as a hobby not a public service. Who fucking cares.

This sounds nice and all but ignores how Concept + Development actually work. There is MANY shows that started strong and went to shit
For example, Miraculous, which made every single protagonist the biggest cunts possible and ruined so many things as it went.
Sonic Case is a nightmare bc Sega didn't stick to a single canon, so you have fans of VASTLY different interpretations which caused In-fighting.
Tumblr media
Fandom Problem #4768:
If you don’t like the plot of most to all works in the franchise, you don’t like the franchise. If you only like the characters when they’re ridiculously OOC, you don’t like the characters. If you think the writing of a work is terrible, you dislike that work. If you think the writer is a talentless hack, you don’t like the stuff they’ve written. All of these feel like cartoonishly obvious statements, and yet I can’t help but constantly be questioning why the hell people are even in fandoms they’re in when they have nothing but loathing for the work. You’re not a fan, you’re someone with a ridiculous obsession with hating a work and remaking it to how you want it.

It is even worse bc Tails exist????
And he has a fucking House where Sonic comes back to check on him regularly?????? Where it is the most likely Sonic has his books and shit???????????
Meaning he is fine having a place to go back to. He is just not home regularly?????? Hell he even visits cream regularly fucking hell
It would be the same shit not matter whom the fuck his partner is (Amy probs having her bakery or some shit, Sally/Elise/Tiara being badass queen/ Guardian in case of Tiara, Knux and Blaze
I dislike when people say "a character can only be in a relationship with Sonic if they can keep up with him" like a character HAS to be fast like Sonic in order to date him. To me it just feels like a way of dismissing other ships. It's also suggesting that Sonic would only like someone, want to hang out with them, or want to be in a relationship with them if they're fast.
To keep up with Sonic doesn't just mean to "be fast" or even just going on adventures, it means to be able to keep up with HIS lifestyle, he's a free spirit that doesn't stay in one place for too long or settle down, he's always on the move. He doesn't want to be tied down by someone. And I don't think there's a character in canon currently that has the same lifestyle as Sonic or can realistically keep up with his lifestyle in the long run for a relationship.
So the only way I can see a character being in a relationship with Sonic is not by "keeping up with him" (unless the character is a clone of Sonic), but by having patience; Knowing that they won't be able to keep up with his lifestyle and Sonic won't always be around, and be okay with it. He'll often be doing his own thing, playing by his own feelings. And when he feels like it, he'll stop by and spend time with whoever he's in a relationship with.

Ok but like adding to that, Im also fucking bothered they (Sega) never really tried to give Amy ANY traits for compatibility with Snoc????
Sally (Satam, the one the doesn't suck) let him do as he wishes and respected his boundaries and shit (and based on a few other things is a little of a thrill seeker herself)
Tiara was gonna match his cool actitude and the being sporty
Blaze is a perfect counterpart and they balance each other out
Meanwhile Amy: Hyper girly, that care more about dates, baking (why not make her a fan of cooking street food, like you know, his Favorite fucking food) and constantly drags him around which he hates.... like wtf Sega????
Hell Knuckles has better chemestry than her with Sonic
Fuckinf Prime is basically Sonadow Fuel (and dont get me started how Tails (Nine) ans Knux (Dread) were allowed unique versions of themselves while all of Amy are "all good deep down that All always love sonic bc obv that is a personality trait"/s
Opinion: The only times were I liked s0namy were in Zero Gravity and Unleashed, any other game or media I've either been apathetic towards it or disliked it. If more interpretations of their dynamic were like that I might like the ship more
Idk all the other ones I ended up disliking I either find Amy to be flanderized as too obsessive/entitled to Sonic's love (Battle, Heroes, Rush, Advance 3, Sonic X, ect.) or Amy and the s0namy dynamic to be too bland/boring (Frontiers)

Omg yes.
Also on the Eggman thing: Good Father? When every scene with Sage before THAT THEY USED FOR SOKE REASON TO SHOW HER SAD "i want a family" Were the scenee where He verbally verated her.
Yeah right, Father of the year folks!/s
I think thats my problem with Frontiers, yes it's an improvement over the 2010s games writing and I'm happy we're finally away from whatever Forces tried to do. But it feels so cynical but to me the final straw was the constant references. It felt too unnatural. After over 10 years of abysmal writing its just ughh
Imma be real with you chief: I think Frontiers' story is worse than all the Pontaff games.
Oh, those have their issues too, but they're issues that honestly never bothered me beyond "eh, wish they did something more with it". Like, I wish they packed more cute meta references in Generations, since that one was actually meant to be a blast from the past. Or I wish Forces didn't miss outright chunks when it came to showing Eggman conquering the world. Or I wish Amy and Knuckles were more than the comic relief in Lost World. Or I wish that the majority of Colors' story wasn't Sonic talking to mute robots, and was more about him and Tails having a fun romp. Yeah, those games have a strong cheesy tone and were either rather fluffy or didn't elaborate much on their concepts, I don't deny it.
But I don't even know what to praise in Frontiers' story. I guess Sonic and Knuckles' homoerotic dynamic? That was funny lol. But the game is just so full of itself I can hardly see through its blatant arrogance. The story does so little and still pretends to fix everything that was wrong with Sonic in the '10s, when in some regards it regresses things.
It's still "Sonic does everything while his friends cheer on the side" which was a big complaint in the "Solo Sonica" era, but now I have to ooh and aah as Amy, Knuckles and Tails go through the same arcs they went through in 1998 which is what passes as "development". Yes, "development" is apparently Amy chewing Sonic out because he's more concerned about his friends' safety and wellbeing than making some random critters happy, or Tails moping around because he's "wildly inconsistent" - tell me how this is better than him actually doing shit in Forces to stop Eggman and his Death Egg, after the infamous "Sonic help me" scene?
Eggman sits on his ass for the majority of the game like in Sonic Heroes because we're back to the era where shitty gods without a personality steal the final boss role (at least Dark Gaia didn't talk :V), but I'm meant to aww because now he's human, now he's fleshed out, see he created a cute daughter for himself! He cares! He's sad for her death/he holds her hand like a cute papa! He's a better character now! Because being a papa was what he always needed! What do you mean that in the Pontaff games he was actually the sole, genuine threat? Something fans used to cheer for when Colors came out?
At least Zor and Infinite are endearing in their own tryhard way (and Infinite was voiced by my dear Liam O'Brien lmao), which is more I can say for The End and especially Sage, the laziest Rei Ayanami ripoff I've ever seen but without a smidge of her tragic personality.
But anyway, thank you for giving me another word to define Frontiers' story with: cynical. Yeah, in a way, it is cynical, in how it was only written to be considered better than the older stupid games, and better in the same way a fanfiction written by a disgruntled fan would be considered. That's what it tried to do, and I can't consider it better than what Forces tried to do, which was simply to appeal to multiple types of fans.

You are definitively not wrong. And also i love how people complain about sexism yet want the female character personality to do a 180 in order to be with her crush... like wtf

When it comes to designing fan characters, do you like to stay within the confines of what people consider to be “acceptable” for certain aspects, like powers/abilities, specie choice, overall design, incorporating certain ties and affiliates to official characters, etc? I guess the “unspoken rules” when it comes to making a “proper” oc that fits the overall spirit and lore, rather than an “oc in sonic style” that “doesn’t fit”. Do you think that taking a leap of faith to originality is bad?
Tumblr media
This is a thoughtful question Anon, but I find it concerning that there's an insinuation how wanting to be held to any kind of standard is "bad" for originality. In my experience, this is not always the case.
Having self-imposed restrictions can seem unnecessary if your goal for creating is to not think hard about expectations and instead, purely for self-expression. There are no hard rules for how to make fanart. If you want to add a ton of accessories on fan characters, use every color under the rainbow or construct one in a way that breaks the Sonic standard, it's your choice! What's gained from making characters for the joy of it and without the weight of "perceived expectations" looming over you is a reward in of itself.
With that aside, what really matters is what your ultimate goal is with your fan characters. Because when people ask for my insights on designing one, what I believe most are REALLY searching for is a way to get an audience to CARE.
This is a much deeper conversation beyond whether or not your character is "original" and "breaking the rules". Now you're entering uncharted territory where it's no longer about what only YOU want out of your creations. You HAVE to now consider how OTHERS will perceive them and make intentional design choices that gets the audience and reactions you WANT.
Jolt and Strike's Crew were created in the frame of mind that they would be used for a full story line. The ultimate goal is to create an engaging comic that both appeals to my own interest in this series while still drawing in an audience. And of course, this causes me to have to consider what makes a character bring an audience in and KEEP them. It ultimately defines what kind of character it will be!
Having a standard to measure your creations against isn't a hamper on originality. In fact, by HAVING restrictions, you're challenged to think OUTSIDE of the box and find an elegant solution that can be novel but still fit. Not all good ideas are born from having NO obstacles in our way; rarely does it work like that.
When starting Shadow and Jolt, I had zero clue on how to actually make a likeable character. I knew theories, I had read about it and made fan art of established characters that people already liked.
BUT I had never put it into practice from scratch. I had to learn as I went and made a ton of mistakes until the right solution became apparent!
This is a long answer but basically Anon, what is your intention? Do you just want to create for the sake of it,
or are you creating to be seen and have others engage with your work like that of an Author with an audience of Readers? Do you want to BUILD an audience that likes your fan-characters, wants to learn more about them and is EXCITED to see more of them?
That's the real question to reflect on. And it may require asking yourself if you even know what it means to achieve such a goal.
Because believe me, it's not easy. It took YEARS to build what I have now. But, it's also extremely rewarding and for me, worth all those extra late nights spent working diligently to make it happen.
I hope this helps anon. I get that this may not seem like a very fun answer. It's not always fun to create for an audience. Sometimes it's very hard! But if you love it enough and you are open to knowing what you don't know, you can find joy in a healthy challenge. This project is still just as fun for me to do as it was 6 years ago when it began. And I wouldn't change it one bit. :)
