Ā WELL, that happened. Meilin ā or was she Bojing now? Could she be? Should she be? ā didnāt know Xia Chen nearly well enough to make any snap judgments about the boy. But even she ( theyĀ ? ) could tell something wasnāt quite right about the way he just ā¦ took off, his demeanor a little off. Had to be about whoever heād received that text from, no doubt. No matter. She ā¦ they ā¦ damn it ā¦ would ask him the next time he whirled onto the scene, make sure everything was at least marginally okay. Right. Okay. Like how it was okay that she was inhabiting the body of a boy who sheād only heard about but had never tried to talk to before. Like how her own body was ā¦ gone. Somewhere. Wherever bodies without souls went, she supposed. It was enough to give a girl a complex. Stifling the urge to smack her head against the mirror ā that damnable mirror with that damnably pretty face looking back at her ( him ā¦ They ā¦ Whatever )Ā ā she took a deep breath and slowly let it out, trying to work up what was left of her courage and leave the safety of the bathroom. And that was how she found herself in the middle of the hallway seconds later, hands clenched into tight fists at her sides.Ā

Ā Ā Ā HEĀ wanted to take back the words almost as soon as he said them ā wanted to brush off the awkwardness and the nervousness and the pain of distance like one might an old, antique desk in need of a good dusting.Ā Because this was Ki-Woong, someone heād known all of his life ā¦ the closest thing to a brother heād ever had. Brother? No, that wasnāt quite right. Theyād been close, true enough, but heād never treated the tiguri as a brother. Their relationship had been too ā¦ complicated for that. And now it was nearly nonexistentĀ ā all because Junsu didnāt know how to fix the part of their bond that had eroded as a direct result of theĀ Yeoju incident. He was hurting, his soul screaming for its other half. But he was selfish too, and his selfish heart was crying, wanting to reach out to the tiguri but afraid of seeing him lose his mind again, reduced to nothing more than an enraged, feral animal who reveled in the blood of its enemy. So apparently he was a hypocrite too, since it was that same enraged, feral animal that had protected him with everything it had, killing only for the sake of his well-being.Ā
Ā Ā And what had he done? Heād spat on the gift of his protection by running from him. God, he was a horrible person.Ā
Ā Ā ć I-IāM SORRY, ć Junsu whispered, his soft voice echoing in the empty hallway as his fingers slowly closed around the keys, his knuckles whitening under the strain of a too-tight grip. Iām sorry for being weak. His throat constricted, and unshed tears stung his eyes. But he refused to shed them. Because this ā their separation ā was his fault, and he didnāt deserve to cry for a bond he himself had shattered. Blowing out a breath of weary resignation, he slipped the key into the dead bolt and turned it, then headed inside, hoping to put an end to this awful, emotionally draining day. See you ā¦ Ki-Woong.

Ā Ā IT wasnāt like him to be so edgy, the stress of moving to a new city, along with his inner struggle to forget all that had transpired in Yeoju, negatively impacting his mood. But as soon as heād laid eyes on Ki-Woong, after weeks of acclimating himself to the very real possibility of never seeing him againĀ ā of never again experiencing the feeling of being intimately and closely bonded with another individual ā all that mental and emotional preparation flew out the window, leaving him feeling raw and completely exposed, vulnerability and weakness slipping through the crevices to claim a front-row seat to his looming relapse.Ā ć I GUESS I JUST ASSUMED YOU WOULDāVE GOTTEN THE MESSAGE BY NOW, ć Junsu muttered, absently rubbing his palms against the worn, jean material of his pants and licking his lips in nervousness as his gaze dropped once more, as though compelled by some unnamed force, to the keys still gripped in Ki-Woongās hand, tempted to make a dive for them. But the other maleās reflexes had always been better than his, much to his chagrin. Maybe being of the cat persuasion had something to do with it.Ā
Ā Ā Ā ć OH, CāMON. DONāT TELL ME YOU ACTUALLY EXPECT ME TO BELIEVE THAT. ć He snorted, the sound rife with dubiety and scorn. He wasnāt some young, doe-eyed miss capable of enslaving men to her will ā nor was he born yesterday. So if Ki-Woong actually did expect him to believe that nonsense, then heād be in for a very rude awakening.
ć YOUāRE DOING IT AGAIN, ć he accused, holding out both hands as if to ward him off as he backed up even further, his back making contact with his front door even as he shifted mid-step to lean away from the advancing tiguri. But he had nowhere left to run. Damn. And Ki-Woong ā his next words managed to catch Junsu completely off guard, rendering him motionless.Ā ć I-I DONāT, ć he whispered, his tone sincere, too baffled by the insecurity he could hear in the soft tenor of Ki-Woongās voice to even try to lie.Ā ć I JUST NEED ā¦ TIME. ć And a whole lot of cinnamon buns, cheesecake, and therapy, preferably in that order.Ā Ā
Ā NERVOUSNESS PERVADED THE ATMOSPHERE like an airborne virus,Ā infecting everything in its path, and it offended the cat, causing the fur on his nape to bristle in indignation as he watched from unblinking eyes of amber as Junsu continued to fidget in his presenceā the bitter scent of aloofness clouding his senses, making it harder to ignore the looming threat of permanent separation, a presage to the utter destruction of what little composure heād managed to maintain in the standoffish company of his bonded. Because this distanceĀ reminded Ki-Woong of a time in which he struggled desperately to reach Junsuās side in his hour of need āand failed ā¦ dismally. And no matter how often he wished to turn back the hands of time, or at the very least bury his head in the sand and pretend the last couple of months of his life had been nothing more than a stress-induced nightmare, the fact of the matter was that he was stuck trying to win back the heart of a human whoād witnessed firsthand the horrors and dangers of being bonded to a tiguri. He would give anything āeven his life āto change the past, to save the boy from such horrifying experiences.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā B U TĀ he couldnāt. He wasnāt powerful enough, and he never would be ā which fucking rankled in its Ā OWN right.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āWhy wouldnāt you?ā Ki-Woong asked, genuinely perplexed. Heād never lie about something so important. Junsu was the reason heād taken it upon himself to set up house in Seoulāso, yeah. In a way, he was spellbound.Ā āYell at me, curse me, hit meā just donāt accuse me of lying.Ā Because Iām not.ā To think that his opinion of him could be so low ā it hurt. āAnd donāt take my words as a joke either. Again ātheyāre not.ā He might joke about a lot of things, but his feelings for Junsu were off limits, to everyoneā including Junsu and especially himself.
Ā Ā Ā Ā āDoing what, exactly?ā A nonchalant quirk of his eyebrow was proof enough that he knew exactly what his little human referred to. He just pretended otherwise. But then his smileĀ āsmall in size and wistfulĀ by nature āfroze at the other maleās admittance. So, even after all that, he didnāt hate him? That piece of information should have thrilled him, instilled him with hope.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā But it did the complete opposite.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā It sat like a stone in the pit of his stomach, a stagnant reminder that this trip had been made in vain āthat it had, in fact, been nothing more than another useless endeavor to turn the tides in his favor.
āSure, J,ā Ki-Woong murmured, gently claiming the boyās hand with his slightly larger one and pressing a soft, chaste kiss against his knuckles ābefore finally relinquishing his keys.Ā āTake all the time you need. Iāll be around.ā Watching ā¦ waiting for the moment of truth āwaiting for Junsu to finally cave and let him back in.Ā āIf you ever need me ā¦ ā He coughed, then forced another smile for the sake of propriety, not wanting to give his bonded yet another reason to avoid him.Ā āSee you.ā A terse nodāĀ before he vacated the hallway, swift as the cat who was jonesing to escape into the night, desperate for the freedom to run as fast as his four legs could carry him.

Ā Ā Ā SHEĀ didnāt know what to make of Xia ( something or other. ) He was ā charming? Amusing? ā in the comic-relief kind of way, his teasing carrying an undertone of satirical wit she didnāt hear or see everyday. But he wasnāt able to completely hide his concern underneath that well-put-together facade of frivolity, no matter how much he might have wanted to.Ā ćOH, YES. THATāS ALL IāVE EVER DREAMED ABOUT,Ā ć Ā Meilin volleyed back, her tone as dry as bone even as she fought to hide a smile at his antics. With a situation as unsettling as hers, she appreciated being able to laugh at something she would have found funny long before sheād slipped and taken a tumble into the life of one Wu Bojing ( or so the school nurse had called her ), the ever cool, reserved co-captain of the schoolās swimming team. Sometimes, she still felt like this ā what she was currently experiencing ā was a dream and that sheād wake up from it any minute now. Wishful thinking on her part. ćYEAH, WELL, IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE. ITāS NOT LIKE I WAS IN ANY ACTUAL DANGER OF DYING.Ā ć Nope. That ship had already sailed. Still, from personal experience, the only way to successfully downplay oneās own near-death experience was to make light of the whole ordeal.Ā
Ā Ā Ā And he gave her the perfect excuse to move on ā by already making a blunder with something as trivial as a nickname. Wincing, she ducked her head, afraid that heād see the lie in her eyes; soft, brown eyes that were framed by long, ebony lashes ( which was a lie in itself. ) These werenāt her eyes, but she couldnāt admit as much. Who would believe her?Ā ćI DONāT THINK IāVE COMPLETELY RECOVERED ā¦ BUT I SHOULD BE BACK TO MY NORMAL SELF BY TOMORROW,Ā ć she hastened to assure him, giving herself one day to come to terms with her current situation ( and to find it within herself to play the role of Bojing without fear of being found out and prosecuted for it. )Ā
WHEN she noticed the expression on his face, however, worry ā not for herself, but for himĀ ā wiggled past the unease affixed to her thoughts. Biting her lips in indecision, Meilin finally relented and gently laid a hand on his shoulder. ćIS EVERYTHINGĀ OKAY?Ā ć
Ā āYEAH, WELL, iām pretty sure thereās not supposed to be that much water in your lungs. something about breathing complications,ā xia chen muttered distractedly, fingers practically flying over the keypad as he quickly but deftly shot off a text to his younger cousin, who had come across as strangely distraught and secretive ā at least for her ā in her own message. and ifĀ thereĀ was one thingĀ he couldnāt stand,Ā it was knowing that something or someone had hurt one of his special people, the very people he was so damn protectiveĀ Ā ć and maybe slightly possessive ćĀ Ā over. jiayi was one such person ā¦ but so was bojing. bojing, who had nearly drowned but refused to accept the propinquity of his death via breathing complications. lifting brown eyes, the gleam of perplexity that had crept into his expressive gaze sharpening to a needle-fine point, to fix the blond with a tense frown, he said nothing as he studied his friendās face under the muted glow of a dying light bulb, immediately able to recognize the strain in said friendās mien and the defeatist air he exuded with his assertion ā the perks of being a best friend. on the one hand, it was a relief to know that bo wasnāt in denial about his brief health scare. but on the other hand, the other boy clearly wasnāt well, and it showed, the physical proof there to see in the way he hunched his shoulders, the telltale sign of one who wanted to hide. āwe should have a pajama party tonight ā rock the whole being alive thing till some poor, sleep-deprived granny calls the coppers on us for being rowdy teenagers.ā a productive way to take oneās mind off of oneās own traumatic experiences. his mother would probably approve even if he were to wind up in front of a judge, expounding on his kooky idea to brighten a best palās day.
but for bo, he was willing to risk potential J A I L time for disrupting the peace and lives of little, old ladies everywhere.Ā
āyeah,Ā everythingās goodĀ ā nothingĀ toĀ worryĀ your pretty,Ā littleĀ head over,ā xiaĀ chenĀ replied offhandedly,Ā pullingĀ offĀ casualĀ andĀ relaxedĀ as if itĀ was taco tuesdayĀ and heādĀ forgottenĀ toĀ bring napkins. oops. heĀ evenĀ added aĀ nonchalantĀ shrugĀ forĀ good measure ā Ā afterĀ returningĀ hisĀ phoneĀ toĀ hisĀ back pocket,Ā of course. āiāll catch you later,Ā okay?ā not so much a question as a matter of intentĀ Ā Ā ć as in, he had places to be and it had absolutely nothing to do with jiayiās text. nope. nuh-uh. ćĀ Ā āandĀ whateverĀ you do, donātĀ tryĀ toĀ catchĀ anyĀ moreĀ nonexistent waves. seriously.Ā i canāt have my very best friend in the whole wide world falling into a black hole at the bottom of some fish tank. iād miss him too much.ā and so, after clinging to bojingās arm for a few long minutes and positively agonizing over their imminent separation, he finally released him with a gentle, friendly squeeze and vamoosed, his mind already on his cousinās surprising and unwelcome and sĒ pƬ yĒn, i will destroy you predicament and what he would need to do to fix it.

āāenough,ā jin-woon returned cheekily, dimples surfacing as his smile deepened the lines fanning out from the corners of his eyes. laugh lines. happy lines. lines of relief and delight, both of which indicated a genuine happiness for his brotherās presence. it meant that he was no longer alone. but just because kiās destination had led him to seoul ā to where jin-woon was ā didnāt make his current situation anyĀ better. he was still being hunted by that stubborn brute of a revenant. and even if he were to fill ki in on all that had transpired thus far, he still wouldnāt be able to do anything. so ā he wouldnāt tell him; simple as that.Ā āwhy? doĀ you need to take a loan out or something?ā he added, somehow managing to keep a straight face despite the bubbling threat of laughter sitting in his chest. there was simply no way his brother would hunt him down for a loan ā he had too much pride for that. and besides, that was a human thing, and they werenāt human.Ā
Ā Ā āani ā nothing special. just a few trees and some passersby gawking at a naked guitarist. doubt theyāll be worth much.ā speaking from a professional standpoint, of course.
ādisappointment. he knew that feeling well. lightly placing his hand on the other maleās shoulder, he gave it a sympathetic squeeze.Ā āat leastĀ itās not an outright rejection ā right?ā jin-woon felt compelled to point out, wanting only to make him feel better but not quite sure he succeeded.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā ām-me?ā he looked away, fiddling with the lens of his camera as he thought of his new home and what had led him to settle there.Ā āiām fineĀ āĀ found a pretty decent place to live.ā an overstatement.Ā āand taking pictures is fun. it gives me a sense of purpose.ā something his life had sorely lacked before, true enough.Ā āyou donāt need to worry about me, ki.ā
A BURST OF LAUGHTERĀ escaped his mouth, dredged up at the expense of the younger tiguriās facetious demeanor, and as he reached forward to ruffle the boyās dark brown hair, a grin curled Ki-Woongās lips. Leave it to his baby brother to finagle some modicum of amusement from a relatively large arsenal of negative emotions ā primed to erupt at the smallest provocation. What other reason could he possibly have for wanting to play along?Ā āBoy, do I look like I need your money?ā Loaded question ā his worn jeans and faded gray t-shirt didnāt exactly give off the very tricky and often byzantine impression of wealth. But hey, appearances could be misleading.Ā āI donāt care about money or how much you make.ā If it was enough to live on, who was he to judge? āAll I care about is your happiness ā and maybe a slice of banana bread every now and then. Care to treat me to one?ā Ā Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ANYTHING to take his mind off of Junsu. So what if the humanās words still r a n g Ā through his MIND, making that godawful racket?
Ā Ā IF he could just stay busy ā keepĀ his thoughts away from forbidden territory ā¦ WasĀ that too much to ask? Well, to hell with that. It was a done deal.Ā āReally? Thatās it?ā Ki-Woong gave him such a look of disappointment that one could swear the air practically seethed with it; such was the strength of his determination to mask the pain of having no other choice but to perpetuate this distasteful separation ā at the behest of his own human charge.Ā āIĀ guess,ā he mumbled, soft enough to skate the very outskirts of human hearing. Their hearing range was ridiculously limited. But thankfully, Jin wasnāt human ā¦ so at least Ki-Woong wasnāt expected to carry a normal tone when all he wanted to do was feign ignorance ā or change the damn subject.
Ā Ā Ā And at last ā Jin provided him with the opportunity to do just that.
āDonāt I?ā A grim frown flashed over the older tiguriās face, and he took the necessary steps to face Jin properly, bringing his hands up to cup his chin.Ā āTell me the truth, Jin.ā Ki-Woong held his gaze, amber eyes burning at the thought of someone hurting his brother.Ā āAre you in trouble?ā
