Can't Choose Between Concealers? Color-Correcting Concealer vs Liquid Concealer
Concealer is a beauty tool that is typically matched to the color of one's skin to cover blemishes and dark circles under the eyes. Some use a concealer that is one or two shades lighter than their skin color to create a brightening effect. There is also an additional type of concealer that is created in different colors to conceal different skin issues. Today, we are going to go over the differences between a typical liquid concealer and a color-correcting concealer.
Color-Correcting Concealers
Pros: Using the color wheel theory, green concealer cancels out the red undertones from acne and rosacea. Purples minimize yellow spots while orange concealers cancel out the blue in dark circles under the eyes. Color-correcting concealers work best for uneven skin tones and severe skin discoloration.
Cons: This type of concealer cannot be used alone for a full-coverage makeup look since each color can only be used to cover their opposite color on the color wheel. So acquiring multiple colors can get pricey and for those with minimal discoloration, it may not be needed.
ELF Cosmetics' Camo Color Corrector is an affordable vegan and cruelty free option!
Liquid Concealer
Pros: Liquid concealers brighten one's skin complexion while minimizing skin discoloration. Its radiant finish makes it suitable for most skin types. The lightweight formula is very breathable and buildable!
Cons: For those with severe skin discoloration and/or acne, liquid concealer might not provide enough coverage to cancel out specific undertones. Applying multiple layers to counteract undertones that vary from one's overall skin tone can leave the skin looking 'cakey' and heavily textured.
Rare Beauty's Liquid Touch Brightening Concealer is my personal favorite liquid concealer. It is lightweight and very hydrating!

Need Help with Your Highlighter? Liquid Highlighter vs Powder Highlighter
Highlighter is a beauty tool that adds shine to your makeup look by reflecting light on the highest points of your face. Depending on your proficiency, comfort level, and skin type, one type of highlighter may look more flattering on you compared to others. Read further to learn about the benefits and disadvantages of both liquid and powder highlighters.
Liquid Highlighter
Pros: The hydrating properties of liquid highlighters leave the skin with a healthy glow while providing moisture. Liquids are typically very concentrated in pigment, meaning a little goes along way!
Cons: Liquid highlighters can leave oily skin looking too shiny and have a difficult time lasting on oily skin. The application process can be tedious; if you put too much on, then your skin ends up looking oily instead of dewy. Liquids are also very easy to streak and require more blending compared to powders.
Check out my personal favorite liquid highlighter, Rare Beauty's Positive Light Liquid Luminizer:
Powder Highlighter
Pros: If you are new to the makeup world, powders are for you! They are typically pressed in a pan for a no-fuss, easy application process. The matte-finish of powder highlighters is most effective for those with oily skin because it helps to ride the skin of excess shine.
Cons: Powders are not suitable for those with mature and/or dry skin. It leaves the skin looking lifeless and dull, pulling around dry patches of skin. It can also settle into creases and fine lines instead of blurring skin impurities.
Another Rare Beauty option is the Positive Light Silky Touch Highlighter in the form of a pressed powder:

Perfecting Your Primer: Gel Primer vs Spray Primer
Primer is a must for those intending to use foundation and/or concealer in their makeup routines. It creates an even canvas for makeup to go onto by blurring the pores and fine lines. It helps to create an even distribution of makeup and make it stay longer! Primers come in a variety of formulas, such as sprays and gels. Yet, which is better for you?
Gel Primer
Pros: Gel-based primers are typically suited for all skin types! For those with sensitive skin, gels are formulated to be less irritating and lighter on the skin. The application process is simple, easily applied with fingers or a makeup sponge. It also provides a matte-finish!
Cons: Some gel formulas are less effective at making makeup last longer compared to a spray primer. The matte-finish can make dry, mature skin look dull and dried out. Certain gels are not ideal for those looking for a glowy, dewy-finish unless paired with a hydrating moisturizer.
Milk Makeup's Hydro Grip Gripping Primer is a popular gel-based primer made with Niacinamide and Hyaluronic Acid:
Spray Primer
Pros: Spray primers are much more lightweight and quicker drying than its gel counterpart. Some are made with shimmers to give the appearance of a shiny, dewy complexion. It can also be used to refresh and hydrate the skin throughout the day even after makeup application.
Cons: Compared to gels, sprays are more expensive for a smaller amount of product. For those looking for a matte-finish, this primer formula is not for you. Because the formula is best suited in a spray bottle, it makes even distribution more difficult.

Powder Eyeshadow vs Cream Eyeshadow: Which is better?
Want to draw attention to your eyes? Eyeshadows are a cosmetic tool applied to the eyelids for a sultry, dark look or one that is soft and subtle. Regardless of the intended look, one might wonder about the advantages and drawbacks regarding different eyeshadow formulas. Today, we will be discussing the two most common eyeshadow types: pressed powders and creams.
Powder Eyeshadow
Pros: Pressed powders are fairly easy to apply. Perfect for those new to applying makeup! Powders can be easily blended upon the lid and mixed and matched with a variety of colors. They are very buildable, which makes it very easy to fix any errors throughout the application process.
Cons: Powder eyeshadow can accentuate fine lines and texture on the skin, specifically throughout the day. Some might deal with powder 'fallout' in which a small amount of powder may fall upon the cheeks. Powders are not long-lasting, meaning the pigment tends to dissipate in color after a few hours.
For those wanting a natural or smokey brown eyeshadow look, check out Tarte's Tartelette in Bloom Clay Eyeshadow Palette:
Cream Eyeshadow
Pros: For those with dry or mature skin around the eyes, cream eyeshadows are ideal to decrease the risk of creasing. Creams last much longer than powders and hardly ever need reapplying. Additionally, cream eyeshadows come in a variety of shimmers and glitters for those wanting a glam look or a brightening effect for the eyes.
Cons: Creams cannot be applied on top of powders and are limited in color. They are not ideal for those wishing to create eyeshadow looks with multiple colors. Also, those with severely oily skin or who live in much warmer climates might notice smudging throughout the day.

Elevating Your Makeup: Matte Lipstick vs Glossy Lipstick
Lipstick is a cosmetic tool that adds color and texture to one's lips. It symbolizes the expression of a woman's confidence and sensuality. Lipstick can be the finishing touch that elevates an entire makeup look in seconds. Yet, how do you know which lipstick is right for you?
Matte Lipstick
Pros: Matte lipsticks are perfect for a velvet-like lip color with zero shine! It is long-lasting and smudge-proof for those worried about their lipstick diminishing throughout the day. Matte lipsticks come in a wide variety of colors and are highly pigmented.
Cons: The formula of matte lipsticks is very drying and can leave the lips looking cracked and dehydrated. Some formulas leave a stain that can take hours to dissipate in color. Additionally, the more intense the pigment is, the more precise you have to be upon application. Mistakes are hard to fix!
Mac Cosmetics' Retro Matte Lipstick is highly reviewed and my best friend's personal favorite!
Glossy Lipstick
Pros: Glossy lipsticks add a bit of luster and shine to one's lips. Easy application makes this lipstick perfect for beginners and mistakes can be easily cleaned up. Have dry lips? Glossy lipsticks are very hydrating and will keep your lips looking moisturized.
Cons: This type of lipstick needs to be reapplied often and can be easily transferred off one's lips after a meal or in hot weather. Some formulas leave the lips feeling tacky or sticky, which can be uncomfortable throughout the day.
Charlotte Tilbury's Glossy Lipsticks come in a wide variety of colors and even include the TikTok-viral shade, Pillow Talk:

Bronzer vs Contour: Breaking Down the Difference
Unlike foundation and concealer, bronzer and contour are makeup tools used to add depth to your face by using shades darker than your natural skin color. Although they are similar, both use that added depth for different purposes! Purposes that might be beneficial for you or unnecessary to achieve your ideal makeup look.
Bronzer
Pros: Bronzer creates a tan complexion for those looking to add warm undertones in their makeup. It adds a radiant glow for a perfect sun-kissed look! The all-over bronze look can be applied down the neck and even on your chest.
Cons: Bronzer is easy to mess up! Too much can leave you looking both shiny and muddy with an orange complexion. Bronzers tend to pull around dry patches of skin, specifically liquid bronzers. If you struggle with dry skin, then having a hydrating moisturizer is a must to use this product.
Award-winning Benefit Cosmetics' Hoola Matte Bronzer is a cult classic amongst veteran makeup users! Check it out here:
Contour
Pros: Contour sculpts your face by defining your natural cheekbones, jawline, and nose. It can be used to make your forehead or nose to appear smaller with the illusion of shadows. The result is a natural and subtle enhancement of your facial structure.
Cons: Using too much contour can leave the skin looking 'cakey' while diminishing the effects of any other beauty tools used. If you use a shade too dark, then you risk the appearance of harsh, dark lines along your bone structure that look unnatural. Practice is key to master this makeup tool!
Fenty Beauty's Match Stix Sculpt'r Squad is light-weight and can be easily blended!

Bow Down to the Brows: Brow Gel or Brow Pencil?
Eyebrow makeup is the perfect beauty tool to frame your face, fill out your brows, and even alter your brows' shape. Crafting the 'perfect brow' can help you achieve a balanced, natural look or dramatic, bold look. These looks can be done with a brow gel or brow pencil but how can you be sure which is right for you?
Brow Gel
Pros: Brow gel is used to create fullness by holding your brows in place. This is perfect for those desiring a natural, fluffy brow while maintaining those unruly hair strands that have a mind of its own. Brow gel is preferred by those with naturally lighter brows, such as blonde or grey, who want to tint them a darker color.
Cons: Brow gel is not the most effective eyebrow tool for those with severely sparse brows. It cannot create hair strokes but rather coat the hair strands one already has. Some makeup users find that low quality brow gel can leave a wax-like residue that can flake off throughout the day.
Glossier's Boy Brow Gel is popular amongst teens and makeup beginners. Check it out here:
Brow Pencil
Pros: Brow pencils are highly effective at carving out a brow arch and altering your brows' natural shape. A pencil is perfect at darkening and thickening the appearance of your brows by covering sparse areas and scars with highly realistic pencil strokes.
Cons: Pencils do not hold brows in place, which is unhelpful for those looking to tame unmanageable hairs. Pencil formulas can leave the brows looking waxy and require some practice to master the precision in using a pencil.
Anastasia's Brow Wiz is a well-reviewed brow pencil that even comes attached with a spoolie.

Mastering Mascaras: Waterproof or Tubing?
Mascara, probably the most common beauty enhancement tool, is designed to coat your upper and lower lash lines. It aims to darken, lengthen, add volume, and/or thicken one's lashes. Whether your goal is for your makeup to look naturally subtle or bold and flashy, mascara works with your lashes to enhance the appearance of your eyes. Knowing which type of mascara works for you is necessary to master your mascara technique.
Waterproof Mascara
Pros: Waterproof mascara is designed to withstand water, benefitting those who get sweaty at the gym, swim laps at the pool, or get caught in the rain. The long-lasting formula is less likely to smudge and is more efficient at holding a lash curl.
Cons: Using waterproof mascara daily can lead to brittle, dry lashes that are more prone to lash breakage. Removing this mascara is more difficult and the rubbing needed can lead to inflammation around the eyes.
Maybelline's Lash Sensational waterproof mascara is one of my personal favorites! Check it out here:
Tubing Mascara
Pros: Tubing mascara requires little to no effort when it comes to the removal process. All that is needed is water and a towel. The mascara's tube-like polymers lengthen the lashes without smudging or flaking.
Cons: Tubing mascara lacks the volume that its counterpart is known for. Clumping is a common issue that makes it difficult to layer tubing mascara. If you do not possess naturally thick lashes, then do not rely on tubing mascara for some much needed volume.
Another Maybelline favorite is the Lash Sensational Sky High tubing mascara. Check out the reviews below:

Battle of the Eyeliners: Pencil or Liquid?
Eyeliner is a makeup tool applied to the upper and lower lash lines. It is available in a variety of colors and is mainly used to draw attention to the eyes. It is also used to enhance or even change the appearance of one's eye shape.
The list of eyeliner types is extensive and the decision in picking one depends entirely on your preferences and goals when it comes to your makeup look. Below are the pros and cons of the two most commonly used eyeliner types: pencil eyeliner and liquid eyeliner.
Pencil Eyeliner
Pros: This traditionally known type of eyeliner is made in the form of a stick for easy application, heavily preferred by makeup beginners. It is a popular choice for those with mature eyes because of its bold but soft look. Pencil eyeliners can be smudged to fix any imperfections after the first application or if you want a smoky eye.
Cons: Pencil eyeliners are not long-lasting and can dissipate in color or lose its shape throughout the day. Its stick-shape can make creating a sharp wing more difficult and may require multiple layers to build the color's intensity. Pencil eyeliner shades tend to lack in variety. If you are looking for bold and unique colors, then you might struggle to find that in pencil eyeliners.
Check out the affordable Nyx's Slim Eye Pencil:
Liquid Eyeliner
Pros: Liquid eyeliner is perfect at creating more detailed eye looks whether it is small flicks or a thick, sharp wing. It typically comes with a brush tip that makes shaping your eyeliner more easy. It is very long-lasting and is known for its wide array of colors, such as a vivid blue or neon yellow.
Cons: Its liquid formula makes it more difficult to fix mistakes after the first application. Because this eyeliner is long-lasting and hardly budges once dry, makeup beginners might struggle to get the perfect wing on the first attempt. It requires a steady hand and patience while waiting for the formula to dry on the skin.

Liquid Blush vs Powder Blush: Which Blush Is Right for You?
Makeup is a wonderfully efficient tool created for individuals to highlight features that he or she loves and conceal those that are disliked. Whether it is hiding a blemish or accentuating one's cheekbones, makeup can increase one's confidence and be used as a creative outlet.
Blush is a beauty tool that adds a bit of pop and color to one's cheeks. Depending on skin type and level of competence, you might want to rethink which blush is right for you.
Liquid Blush
Pros: Liquid blush has one of the longest-lasting formulas in the makeup industry. It sets in seconds and is known to last immensely longer throughout the day compared to its counterpart. Liquid blush tends to be more pigmented than powders and give a more dewy complexion on the cheeks.
Cons: If you are prone to having oily skin, then liquid blush will only worsen the appearance of oily skin. Also, the quick drying formula might put makeup beginners at a disadvantage. The act of blending is an art that comes with patience and plenty of practice.
A popular and well-reviewed liquid blush you can try is Rare Beauty's Soft Pinch Liquid Blush:
Powder Blush
Pros: Powder blush is perfect at creating a soft, blurring effect on the cheeks. Compared to liquid blush, powders are more beginner friendly since it can be easily layered and blended. This blush creates a satin-smooth finish to your cheeks for those that prefer a little less shine in their makeup routine.
Cons: For individuals with dry skin, powder blush is more likely to accentuate the lines and creases in your skin. Powders need to be reapplied throughout the day, which can be inconvenient for some.
A bestselling and high quality powder blush you can try is Clinique's Cheek Pop Blush:
Once you figure out which blush is right for you, you can elevate your makeup routine and take it to a new level. Whether you are going for bold and glamorous or light and natural, blush can be the perfect beauty tool to experiment and have fun with.
