Guan probably illustrated his own personal book about Chase Young's history, so we know he's a talented artist.

I headcanon that all the images in the scrolls that aren't the moving silhouettes were drawn by Guan, too. Uncredited as anonymous, of course-- Guan didn't want any ties to Dashi or Chase eclipsing his own legacy.

This serious image of Dashi in the history scrolls were probably a direct request from the elders, who didn't want his goofball nature being recorded

But the shirtless attire was because Guan knew that's what Dashi would have wanted, and he'd at least maintain that.

After all, he drew in his evil armor attire in his history book of Chase because he knew that's how Chase would want to be portrayed, instead of how he knew Chase looked back then.

(The animated silhouettes that accompany each Shen Gong Wu were probably added by Dashi himself though. Rather than illustrations, those just seem to be a spell that Chase knows.)

Clay effortlessly demonstrates his patience, but also his playfulness and skill with horticulture in this cute little exchange with Omi. Clay's voice just sounds so giddy, I can't even capture who pleased he sounds here.

And he's simultaneously being proud of his achievements and also overly humble. Clay's orchid is sprouted larger and healthier than all the other monks' plants by a way wider margin than just "a leaf".

(For comparison's sake, here are Kimiko's and Rai's too)

(Raimundo's stem and leaves are somewhat shriveled and wilted, and I think Kimiko's is dead.)

Some Dashi trio characterization notes for myself but figured I could share: relationship to others addition.

Dashi downplays everything about himself. He wants so much to be unremarkable. To just exist and not worry. He wants acquaintances, and friends, and lovers. He wanted to just be able to chat with the washerwoman by the river or the farmer tending the pigs. Too bad he never can. Too bad everyone either wants him gone - he’s a danger, he gets it - or wants his help - he’s powerful, he gets it - he just wishes things could be different.

Chase is brash and demanding and doesn’t want people to like him. He wants people to respect him and if people can’t respect him, well, fear is close enough. People remember those they fear. Those they respect. And, more than anything, Chase wants to be remembered.

Guan is just trying to make his way up the ladder. He will befriend anyone he needs to to take another step up. Sucking up to people is easy after all, and he knows how to do it and what to say. It doesn’t matter that it’s all fake so long as people like him so he can continue his uphill climb.

Fun fact I noticed about the title of "The Evil Within", it has a double meaning

It's referring to two evils within:

the physical evil currently possessing Clay, in the form of Sibini

the hint of evil (or at least moral grey) that Chase stirs within Omi when he begins their series-long mentorship in this episode

This was the exact scene I was thinking of when I wrote Omi’s line of: “If I wish a river to go upside down or right side up, then it will!”

But to be fair to Master Fung (ughhh) 1) we don’t know how long Omi could have held that waterfall, but I doubt it would have been forever and 2) he was more talking about himself in that line than Omi….
