i think the worst part about sttwt is the way young queer people have no issue making jokes about will byers contracting and dying of hiv/aids.

don’t get me wrong, the straights making these jokes have a very specific section of hell reserved for them, but hearing this come from members of our own community is genuinely appalling.

these kind of “jokes” reek of privilege and ignorance. ur a queer kid in the 2020s. don’t ever underestimate the weight of such a luxury — being out and queer NOW.

it’s also just fucking sad. queer kids perpetuating harmful media tropes, that reduce us to our trauma; that reduce our community to one of its darkest and most catastrophic times. like yeah, it could just be due to the lack of diverse representation in media (in terms of identity, experience, and plot) but it’s literally not hard to reach out to community and unlearn those misconceptions. especially when u like??? have access to the fucking internet????

what’s more is that there’s another public health crisis underway. a public health crisis that will harm a significant portion of our community (im talking about the whole monkey pox situation). if queer kids (especially queer kids in fandom spaces, where we’re surrounded by fellow queer people 24/7) can’t learn about the history of the hiv/aids crisis, enough to know how distasteful and downright horrid those “jokes” are, then i’m genuinely horrified for the future.

stop acting as if we don’t deserve better just because u wanna make cheap, disgusting jokes at OUR OWN expense.

we are more than our trauma, we are more than our persecution, and the queer audience members who feel seen and understood by characters like will byers deserve to be reminded of that.

we deserve to know, and to believe, that we are capable of being loved, accepted, and happy.
