Low key one of the craziest things to come out of the FF7 Remake project is seeing people applying ‘modern’ fandom language to a ship war that I was first exposed to when I was 8.

Like, I saw someone describe Cloud and Aerith as ‘sibling-coded’ and I could not believe what I was seeing.

You gonna do anything or make any statement about the rampant transmisogyny on this hellsite, especially in cases like predstrogen recently? Or yall gonna stay silent and keep letting/making us get pushed off of it.

I have a number of asks about this, so this is to address all of them, I won't do each individually.

We generally do not comment on individual cases, but because there seems to be mass misinformation around this, I will make an exception and comment on predstrogen.

First, Tumblr has a number of LGBT+ including trans people on staff, and they see things from the inside fully, and they're not protesting this case.

Why do we wrongly have a transphobe reputation? We did have an external contract moderator last year that was making transphobic moderation (and also selling moderation, criminally). As soon as we were aware that person was fired, and we later terminated the entire relationship with that contracting firm and have brought almost everything in-house (at great cost). I have previously commented on this publicly, several times.

I am not aware of any Automattician (people who work at Automattic and Tumblr) who has made any transphobic moderation actions. If it's reported it is investigated immediately, if anything were found that person would be terminated for cause immediately.

In predstrogen's case in addition to some mistagged sexually explicit posts, which on its own wouldn't be that bad, we have documented cases of harassment. Most importantly, and why they are banned from Tumblr for life, is they made threats of violence against Tumblr staff.

That is never okay. Threats of violence is not protected speech. We will work with police and FBI where appropriate. I just got a death threat yesterday from someone mad about predstrogen, and that account was immediately terminated.

So regardless of whether you still think Tumblr staff is somehow a bunch of transphobes, know that threats of violence or death are still not acceptable and will result in immediate and serious action. Know that when you rile people up, they can do dumb things with possibly permanent consequences.

I think people trotting out "Wyll got re-written, of course he's gonna have less content" as an excuse for Larian are kinda missing the point. Like, the fact that he was re-written is in and of itself, evidence of the problem here.

Like, I understand that Wyll got a negative reception from fans in Early Access, but the fact of the matter is that Wyll isn't exactly the only character in this game to have haters. Like, even now with the full game released, Astarion and Lae'zel don't exactly make the best first impressions and they both get a lot of vocal hate for that. The key difference is that Larian stayed confident in their writing and allowed them to keep those flaws with the understanding that while they may be off-putting to some players, the players that do stick with them will appreciate them all the more for getting to see their growth over the course of the game. However, when it came time to show that same confidence in Wyll's writing, they flinched.

And like, instead of just, making small adjustments here and there to Wyll's story to make it more palatable like they did a bunch of other things in this game, they decided to blow the whole thing up and re-write the entire character just a couple of months before launch. Obviously, deciding to re-do an entire character in just a few months is going to leave them lesser off than the characters who were having their content refined for years. Larian made the decision, with the full knowledge that it would lead to a dearth of Wyll content in the base game, and in the six patches we've gotten since release they've done nothing to make up for that.

So no, the big re-writes for Wyll shouldn't be an excuse for his lack of content. In reality, it's just more evidence of how he was held to a different standard than the other companions by both the devs and the fandom.

if I can be a hater for a moment, this patch note is extremely funny to me cause some Halsin diehards have been harassing lesbians since launch for posting about being uncomfortable with how strong Halsin comes on without the player's input, but they'd always insist that "he only acts like that if you flirt with him first, so if you're uncomfortable it's your own fault."

and well, here we are with a patch that ADDS a platonic path, specifically for people who haven't flirted with Halsin, so kinda goes to show that there was in fact, a problem with Halsin specifically coming on strong to players who weren't interested in him that way.

and of course, the main reaction to this change seems to have been "yay, now people will stop hating on Halsin" as though character hate was the real problem all along, and not the fact that fandom as a whole acts extremely weird towards lesbians.

it is, i think, symptomatic of the way larian has built this brand: bg3 was always marketed as being mature (read: sexual), and that was one of the big draws for players - myself included! especially as media pulls more towards extremes, with mainstream video games starting to get increasingly graphically sexual, graphically violent, and the vogue for 'grey morality' becomes the norm, those boundaries get pushed, and it becomes more and more of a selling point.

larian obviously focused on this, along with the How Do You Do, Fellow Kids brand, the increased accessibility of game devs on twitter, and adopted it heavily into their marketing strategy, and are now pretty reliant on the horny gamer crowd for a lot of their audience, and more importantly, they're doing this on purpose.

which is how you end up in situations like this.

characters (white men) the players want to fuck get centred: they get updates, they get more content, they get favoured. halsin's gone from a side character in EA to a half-fledged romance option, to a full romance option: he shows up in the promotional material, is larian's poster boy for the sex scenes, he gets more content with every update.

now gortash gets more heavily implied situationship lines with the dark urge, because players are horny for him. nevermind that some people aren't playing that way, or that he was originally set up to be a lower-level antagonist; nevermind that if the durge's storyline needed expansion, it should've been with orin and sarevok and bhaal, or that it muddies the writing for the rest of gortash's arc + characterisation: people want to fuck him, so it gets put in the game. it's not even to do with karlach, whose quest so desperately needs expansion! it's specifically catering to the people who want their character to have a Relationship with the slaver, because they're either not interested in or not able to focus on strengthening the weak spots in the narrative: they're just doing things that will net the 'my favourite dating sim' people lmfao.

meanwhile, literal main character wyll gets his quest demoted to a subquest, doesn't get bugfixes, doesn't get a single unique romance greeting after 6 patches and months of requests. he's not a Horny character, so he doesn't get the focus: he's not a player favourite, so he gets nothing. it's just... so unbelievably, indisputably racist, and it's incredibly grim and disappointing to watch it happen in real-time.
