RWBY X Sonic - Yang Xiao Long (The Lion)

I really love the designs done by the rwbyxsonic team for their fusion/crossover and wanted to try my hand at a 3D model and naturally I went with my all-time fave, Yang Xiao Long, the lion!

I confess to cheating a little with the textures by largely using the materials from the reference sheet to avoid having to paint, but I am quite pleased with the result. I also decided to utilize their pose.

Also, they were in a competitive sporting match in Volume 3. There's a very different mentality to those fights. And I think Yang can handle that mental shift, while Mercury is still trying to treat it like a game because his whole persona is built around not caring. If she hadn't had more important things to deal with when he managed to grab her arm, she would have made him eat his legs.

On the one hand: there's Merc's initial reaction to hearing Yang get up & how damn close to DQ-by-aura-loss his bullet twister left her. On another: I truly doubt the part where she almost put him out the ring was deliberate, and the key part of that 'hallucination' ploy was his apparent vulnerability anyhow-Cinder didn't give a shit who won so long as Merc's injury could be plausibly faked.

The editing makes it fairly clear Mercury wasn't expecting to lose. There's his smug 'give it up already' eyeroll as he turns back around to face her but then he has a totally sincere 'uh oh' reaction shot when she goes burning and rushes him and a little slow down moment given to his distinct 'mom pick me up I'm scared' expression when he sees Yang's first huge haymaker coming straight at his face. This is all fairly blink and you'll miss it stuff but there's a very specific language to action scene editing and in this case the meaning is straightforward. Not to mention when they see each other again in V5 all Mercury says is "ready for a rematch Blondie?" and not, like, "let's see if you can beat me when I'm actually trying," which is the sort of thing you'd expect him to say if he was supposed to have let her win at Beacon especially given how insufferably cocky Mercury is.

'kids these days are weirdly scrupulous for no reason'. WRONG not for no reason. grew up on increasingly de-anonymized internet, being available to everyone all the time, data tracked, google sees all, digital panopticon, etc. less and less space to explore and form own opinions without judgment from broad public audience. lack of privacy can be deeply traumatic and cause intense paranoia, obsession with thought crimes, morality, etc. not good.

The anime community is especially guilty of having a deep hatred of anything they consider "filler" or a story going at a slow pace instead of constant action and urgency.

Look we all know that they made up whole arcs back in the day because the studios were too impatient to wait until the manga was done, but you gotta know the difference between "just stalling for time" and "let's examine our characters a bit so you actually care about them when the plot happens".

I was at a courthouse once, and saw an indigenous australian woman in a dressing gown very carefully and gingerly making her way down the steps outside the courthouse, surrounded by family who were helping her down the stairs. We asked if she was OK, because she looked awful. She looked like she should have been wrapped up in bed with blankets and hot soup, not on the steps of a courthouse.

One of her family told us that she had given birth yesterday evening, but that Child Protection services had taken her baby away with no warning, claiming that she wasnt prepared to look after him. What had happened, is that she'd literally only just given birth -- hadn't even passed the afterbirth yet, is holding her blood-coated, crying, newborn baby to her chest -- and a nurse asked what her feeding plan was. She was tired from the birth and distracted by the brand new baby in her arms and thrown off by the timing of the question, but still, she managed to answer, and said she planned to breastfeed him whenever he was hungry.

Well apparently that wasn't enough of a plan for the hospital staff, who reported her and claimed that she was unprepared to look after the child, and claimed that had no social supports, and that the baby was at risk if left with her. All because a brand new mother, 30 seconds after giving birth, didn't have a PowerPoint presentation ready to go that cited the timing cycle she would feed her kid on, and instead simply said that she would feed him when he was hungry.

Child Protection services showed up, took her kid, and she was told to show up to court the next day to contest custody if she wanted her baby back.

So a woman who had given birth less than 24 hours prior was forced to rally her family and show up to court to prove that she a) had a feeding plan for the child, and b) had enough social supports to justify reclaiming her baby.

It was one of the most appalling things I'd ever seen. I don't even know if she won her case. They didn't know at the time we saw them, and after that brief interaction on the stairs, i never saw them again. I sincerely hope she got her newborn baby back.

That was about 5 years ago. And the exact same kind of thing is still happening today.

News broke today from a South Australian whistle-blower of the appalling treatment new mothers frequently receive, including hospital staff taking the baby away from the mother "for medical tests," only for the mother to then be told, with absolutely no prior warning, that the baby was not going to be returned to her.

So, I wanna tackle this "resentment" angle, in a general "Does Yang actually express trauma via resentment as outlined in a recent debate regarding her feelings about Tai's parenting. IE, the claim is that when Yang is traumatized she is prone to resentment, leading to sniping, anger and shouting.

Long story short, Yang does sometimes response to trauma & hurt with some degree of anger. However it is far from universal or her default, instead it is extremely situational. In all instance I've seen of Yang responding to trauma in such a manner there were two elements in common:

1: The pain was recent - Blake abandoned her recently, she lost her arm recently, Ozpin lied recently, ETC.

After she had sufficient time to process the pain and trauma however, Yang's responses tend to be more a quiet resigned state. Such as when the prosthetic came, or when she discussed Raven leaving her, or when discussing having to hold the family together alone.

2: The anger is a defense mechanism - Yang can be angry its one of my favorite things about her, but her anger is situational & in control.

She gets frustrated and overwhelmed in the Emerald Forest, lets her anger out to blow off steam & calms down. She gets angry when Blake is endangering herself but only uses enough strength to make her point then hugs her. She's angry when Weiss is hurt but she still fights strategically by destroying the ground so Neon can't skate & turning Flynt's weapon on him.

These are trends that continue through the course of the series.

When Yang is used to a sort of pain or grappling with trauma she is generally just quietly sad about and rarely all that expressive unless forced to be or overwhelmed.

She kept a smile on her face in V8 even as she was grappling with the idea Summer had been mutilated into a Grimm monster until Ruby's ow defensive anger forced her to break the mask.

The times she uses anger are because the hurt is very recent or someone is actively stamping on her trauma; like Raven did in the tent. It is a defense mechanism against pain she hasn't fully processed.

Conclusion:

So, in that regard & with that in mind, I don't think Yang not expressing overt resentment of Tai indicates much of anything about their relationship.

Its well established Yang tries to cover for her anxieties by adopting a cheerful façade and to keep others happy. & that in most cases, when she is dealing with trauma, especially longstanding trauma, she's usually resigned and sad about it rather than bubbling with resentment and snark.

So no, I don't believe Yang having to keep the family together and her ensuing parentification was a brief period, long since dealt with. (Ruby outright says Yang raised her) If anything it seems that she has just accepted the situation for what it is because what else can she do?
