New Blog
@doublesung
Hey everyone! I've been putting this off for sooo long now because I've been really busy getting ready to go back to school, but I'm finally ready to let everyone here (however many of you are left lmao) that I will be writing again! I'll be writing on my new blog (@doublesung) instead of this one. I think a change of blog is something that will really help me become a better writer. I will be leaving all of my old writing here if anyone ever wants to go back to it, because I'm just to fond of it to delete it all after putting so much time and effort into it. This blog will always stay open (and maybe active) and any of my current or old mutuals are more than welcome to contact me on here!

tw: sexual assault & offences
Whether a scandal is fake or legit is a whole other debate.
But the reactions that arise when a scandal comes to light outlines some underlying concerns surrounding ‘Stan’ and fan culture.
1. It is nothing short of naive for fans to assume they ‘know’ a celebrity, even if they’ve consumed every piece of media surrounding this person.
Meeting someone once, doesn’t even make grounds for personally knowing someone. Especially in the case of being a celebrity, where it is pertinent to maintain a good reputation. Idols, especially are trained to keep up a polished appearance. They will not represent every aspect of themselves that they don’t want to show, even if it is their true self. This remains the case for anyone, where you truly don’t know them as a person until you’ve taken the time to get to know them personally, celebrity or not.
It’s one thing to say, ‘this person seems to be a kind person, based on what I know about them’, but another to claim, ‘I know this person is a good person and would never do this’.
2. Dismissing the victim because there is no evidence is problematic.
Yes, creating baseless rumours about a celebrity seems to garner more incentive than making one up about anyone else. But is it not, that issue of proving sexual offence and many cases of assault and harassment, the centre of womens’ rights issues?
In many cases, it’s difficult to prove a sexual offence occurred. This ultimately, leaves the issue of believing the perpetrator vs believing the victim. But where the society declares that an accused is innocent until proven guilty, this makes the process of achieving justice in the case of sexual offence almost void. And thus, the victim is much less likely to be believed over the perpetrator.
How is that fair?
The main issue, when fans are quick to dismiss ‘baseless’ accusations, is not only do they harm potential victims by telling them that their trauma didn’t happen, but it also feeds into the culture where the victims of sexual offences are not to be believed because there is no proof.
I have spoken in terms of the extreme case of sexual abuse occurring, but the same principle occurs in many scandals.
