I grew up poor. Religious. Da was strict, Mam, Mam, she was fanatic. Crazed, they said. Walked into the cut when I was seven, Da said it was because we strayed from God. Never had food, we did. Not enough. Not when there were five of us kids. Da told us that was good, not eating. Gluttony is a sin, we learned in church. Mam made us go every week, rain or shine. Religiously. So we kept from eating, us older ones, me an' Jack.
It's not so bad anymore, not financially. Da left after Mam drowned herself, and Aunt Bess came and dragged us out of the slums. Never told us until we were older, of course, but it was the illegal stuff, the fixing races and the threats and the cuttings that did it. We're rich now, technically. But the hunger, that's set in, I think. Jack's taken to whiskey and gin for it. I drown meself in work. That's probably not a good description, considering the cut and all that. But we don't eat, not the eldest of us, me an' Jack. Gluttony's a sin, haven't you heard. and sometimes, I think, the hunger's gotten into our system. Like the fear of straying from God. Mam will walk into the cut, and Da will leave. The family will tear itself apart. So we don't eat, not me an' Jack. It's all that keeps us together.

Tony's not one for the peace and quiet. It's too eerily like his childhood home, no one but ghostly glimpses of his parents and the barely-there shadows of his aunt and the Jarvises. It's too much like the cave, nothing but Yinsen's steady breathing and his own mind whirring at miles and miles per second. It's a jarring reminder that he's alone: it's hard to make noise when you're alone.
But the rain is pretty here, and the rhythmic patters of rain against glass panels are oddly soothing. He watches the rain, and regrets that he cannot do this all day. There is work to be done. Tony Stark isn't made for idle rain-watching, and there is so much work to do. Dum-E curls up and settles to doze in his laps, and Tony decides that perhaps it's better to take the afternoon off anyway.
He must have drifted off at some point, because he comes to to a warm arm around him and a soothing hand in his hair.
"Had a good day?" Steve whispers, carful not to disturb the sleeping cat. His husband carts his hand through Tony's hair and he arches into it. He's so good at that.
"Mmhmm," Tony whispers back, eyes falling shut again. "It was so calm and nice, and this little tyke," stroking Dum-E's head, "decided to fall asleep on me."
"And you couldn't bear to wake him."
Tony nuzzles into his husband's hand in lieu of an answer, and Steve squeezes into the window seat next to him.
"Want something to eat?"
"Nah. I'm happy enough that you're here."
Steve leans his cheek on Tony's curly brown head and Tony's content. Perhaps a little peace and quiet is nice after all.
