Adobe Photoshop now has a generative fill tool. It uses AI to expand images outwards. It's interesting to see how it handles artwork. In this image you can see my original painting in the center. It is still quite primitive, but it's crazy to think where all this is going and where we'll be in a decade. That said, I don't think traditional oil painting is under much of a threat. We survived the automation of image-making via photography, and it will be a (relatively) long time before robots can mix and apply oil paint. I also think the technical difficulties aren't even on the radar of the people working on this sort of stuff.
