Interactive Fiction Showcase 2024
Tumblr media
Showcase your Game!
The Interactive Fiction Showcase is a year-long "jam" meant to collect and showcase Interactive Fiction games completed in 2024, and show how diverse the Interactive Fiction scene is! And maybe: build more bridges between the community, help people finding their new favourite game/author...
Whether it is long or short, an easy adventure or a complicated puzzle, a strange experiment, a quick creation, or a years-in-the-making game, come show off what you've made!
Are you more of a player? Then, come check this page regularly for new submissions! Maybe leave a rating or a comment too :)
This is an unranked event.
Rules:
The Showcase is open to IF games in all of its forms: kinetic, choice-based, hyperlinks, parser, visual novels... As long as it is Interactive Fiction (there is interactivity and the focus of the game is on the text), the entry will be accepted.
The Showcase is open to IF games in any language.
Entries must be playable and in its complete form when submitted. Completed games in 2024, whose demo was previously public, are welcome. Games submitted to other events (jams/competitions) are welcome.
Entries can include NSFW content, as long as it is indicated in the submission.
Entries should not include any generated AI content - or it will be removed.
Spam or hateful content will be removed.
Creating Interactive Fiction:
Interactive Fiction is a text-based narrative medium, where players can interact with the story in some fashion (input commands, click a link/button, press key). There are many different ways of creating IF, and many different programs to do so. You can find some mentioned below:
Primarily HyperText/Choice-Based: Twine,  Ink, ChoiceScript, Dendry
Primarily Parser/Input: Inform 6, Inform 7, PunyInform, Adventuron, ADRIFT
Other: Bitsy, Binksi, Ren'Py
and many more can be found listed in the IF Wiki.
If you are looking for other Interactive Fiction Events, discuss general IF, or ask question, you can visit the IntFiction Forum. (we also have monthly IF events over at @neointeractives)
Interactive Fiction Database and Archive:
IFDB
The IFDB, or Interactive Fiction Database, is an IF game information catalogue, creating a historical record of the IF landscape. The database is a community project, updated by its members, by adding titles to the directory, ratings games, writing reviews... If a listing has not yet been created for your game, please consider making one!
IF Archive
The IF Archive is an archive of Interactive Fiction games, and IF-related elements (walkthroughs, interpreters, articles, collections...). The Archive’s mission is to preserve the history and practice of interactive fiction and make it freely available to the public. If you wish to, you can upload a copy of your game to the IFArchive, through the IFDB listing of your game (recommended) or directly to the archive.
The IFDB and IFArchive, as well as the IntFiction Forum and Twine, are managed by the Interactive Fiction Technology Foundation. These programs are funded through individual donations.
Visual Novel Database
The VNDB, or Visual Novel Database, is a community project that strives to be a comprehensive database for information about visual novels. The database is updated by its members, by adding titles to the directory, ratings games, writing reviews... If a listing has not yet been created for your visual novel, please consider making one!

Currently happening on itch:
For the third year running, TTRPGs for Trans Rights is back—this time, benefitting LGBTQ+ folks in West Virginia and Appalachia. Often, queer and trans folks in these rural areas get forgotten or written off, trapped by gerrymandering and circumstance. But moving isn't an option for every person living in a state that is legislating against them, and so, we fundraise!
All proceeds from this bundle (after fees) will be donated to Project Rainbow - West Virginia's only LGBTQ+ shelter, and an advocacy center that helps queer and trans people throughout Appalachia.
Project Rainbow is a nonprofit organization based in Monongalia County, West Virginia. Since its inception, the project has been curated to serve unsheltered LGBTQ+ individuals to help them better navigate the housing system safely and compassionately. Project Rainbow has opened The Rainbow House in an effort to serve this community and meet this goal. Although the shelter is our community's most urgent and immediate need, Project Rainbow recognizes that there is far more work to be done. They serve as advocates for the individuals we serve, and the Appalachian LGBTQ+ community as a whole. They also work closely with partners in the housing system, health and mental health care systems to not only find solutions for their guests but to make these systems themselves more accessible for their target population.
Previous bundles have benefitted trans-centered organizations in Florida and Texas. For more information about the Trans Rights Bundle project, or to get in touch with the organizers, visit our website: https://transrightsbundle.space
To access contributions from our publishing partners off of itch.io, please take a moment to fill out this form: https://forms.gle/kufKnqBAaaJxcizp7
Paizo Inc. is offering PDF copies of Pathfinder Lost Omens: Knights of Lastwall to all backers of this charity bundle. Note: Paizo grants these PDFs through paizo.com, so you will need to provide an email account associated with a paizo.com account in order to receive this reward.
If you  are a larger publisher who uses their own platform to distribute games, please email [email protected] [email protected] or DM me on twitter if you would like to participate in the bundle. We're happy to work with you to figure out a method for you to be a part of this

Rebumping this because Dan's health has not gotten as better as hoped, and the legal matters around the accident are being drawn out. Any little bit helps a tons!
A dear dear friend of mine has been in a really bad car accident last weekend, and is currently going through multiple rounds of surgeries. And that's after going through a gruelling past year, that's put them in a tough situation.
If you've hung out in the IntFiction Forum or the NeoInteractive Discord, you might have seen him or talked to him. He's personnally been a great support for all my shenanigans and I just want to help however I can with how much I have. [deleted ramble]
Anything from donating to just sharing this will help so much.
Thanks.

Interactive Fiction - Twine Resource Megalist
This Resource Megalist is intended to centralise the resources for the IF Tumblr community to create Interactive Fiction with Twine. While most will focus on the Twine formats, other useful resources will be included.
You can also find a backup of this list on the IntFiction Forum. That list may have more links listed (though I’ll try to update both versions as best as I can).
I’m currently working with other peeps to make this list as comprehensive as possible (since there are //a lot// of information out there. And having dabbled with other programs, I’ve been looking into findind and gathering other Resource lists. TBA on all of that.
Forenote: this list includes more sources for SugarCube, as it is the program I’ve used the most. If you have resources for any/other formats, please let me know so I can edit it!
Official Twine Links
Official Website : Twinery (you can download Twine or use it online) Official Discord: Twine Games, the creators of Twine and most formats, as well as Twine wizard hang out there to help. Official Reddit: Twine Games, answers Twine related questions too.
Twine Formats
Harlowe: Current version: 3.3.8 Repository, Documentation. Creator: Leon Arnott
SugarCube: Current version 2.36.1 Repository, Documentation. Creator: Thomas M. Edwards/TheMadExile/TME (Patreon - KoFi) also created the Tweego Compiler (all format).
Chapbook: Current version 2.0.0 Repository, Documentation. Creator: Chris Klimas (Patreon), who also created Twine!
Snowman: Current version 2.0.2 Repository, Documentation. Creator: Chris Klimas, but currently maintained by Dan Cox.
Many other formats have been created for Twine, and a non-exhaustive list can be found on this page, or this page. Please note that some formats may not be complete or available anymore.
Aside from Tweego, there are also other compilers. A non exhaustive list can be found here.
Forums and Guides
The Twine website has a guide to help with the Twine interface here, as well as Cookbook to help you choose the format you may want to use. The Cookbook includes explanation and tutorials on the ways the different formats operate. There is also the old Twinery Forum where many questions were solved before it closed in 2017 and the Twine Q&A (similar fate). Please note: Due to the Forum closure and the lack of update for the Cookbook, some examples/code may be out of date (though the logic may still be good).
If you are looking for a Forum style-community for help (or discuss Twine), you should go instead to the IntFiction Forum!
Other Guides, Tutorials and Communities
The documentation for each formats may still not be quite easy to get, as it often use very technical description. Below are some guides and tutorials with maybe easier explanations. There might be more (please let me know!).
Guides and Tutorials non-official
YouTube Channels:
Dan Cox
Adam Hammond
Yi Weng
Note: The Twine interface changed in 2022, some aspects of these tutorial may be outdated.
Written Guides:
The 100% Good Twine SugarCube Guide by @manonamora-if (me), includes all SugarCube macros and more (update incoming!).
The Twine Grimoires (Harlowe and SugarCube - focus on visual) by @gcbaccaris (Patreon)

Narroscope Chapbook Talk
Kira’s SugarCube Guide (code)
@townofcrosshollow SugarCube Beginner Tutorial & Tutorial 1.02

Tumblr coders
Below is a list of IF creators using Twine and having created tutorials/answered asks. Please check the creator’s FAQ before sending an ask/contacting them. There might be coders for other formats making tutorials, but I do not know of them.
SugarCube
@manonamora-if : I have #coding support masterlist
@idrellegames also answered a lot of Twine questions over the years (coding asks) (Patreon - Ko-Fi) Note: she does not currently take new coding asks.

@outoftheblue-if coding/tutorials posts (Ko-Fi)
@larkin-if has started making tutorials (Ko-Fi - Patreon)
Harlowe:
@heart-forge used to answer asks. (Ko-Fi)
Coding Communities
Below you will find Discord servers focused on coding with Twine or Interactive Fiction where you can ask question. I am sure there are others Discords or Forums out there (especially with other languages) !
Decoding Twine Discord - run by multiple IF Creators on Tumblr.
Interact-If Discord - mainly an IF discord, but coding questions can be asked there too.
Fiction Interactive - similarly to the one above, this one is mainly an IF community but Francophone.
CAAD - Spanish IF Forum

Other
Turning a Twine Game into a Google App
Interact-If Twine Resources Tag (you may find some of the resources above there) : #twine #twine resources #twine templates
Other Coding/IF Resources
Knowing a bit about other coding languages can help you with customising the visual or the gameplay of the project. CSS/HTML are most helpful when understanding templates or how to build/edit the visual size; JavaScript for the gameplay/animation.
W3Schools is more accessible to new users and the explications tend to be easier to understand overall. However, MDN is thought to have the superior code and will let you know more easily if a code/rule is compatible between browsers. Both websites will include explanation for JavaScript, HTML and CSS.
If you want to learn JavaScript, you may want to start on this website.
Accessibility Resources
An important point that should be included is how to make your project accessible (for screen-readers, colour-blind, visual sensitive, etc…). While the way Twine/Tweego compiles the project into an HTML file already takes some of these into account (especially for screen-reader use), but the way one codes may hinder this accessibility.
Colour Contrast Check
ARIA-rules (used by Twine)
Firefox Accessibility Inspector
Game Accessibility Guidelines
Misc Stuff
Codepen is useful to test HTML/CSS/JavaScript. There are also some cool code out there (but edits are required to work on Twine).
Pattern of CYOA Games is more of an IF Planning resource than a coding one, but is always useful to have.
Interact-If has also reblogged some resources (see the Platform Ref Tag Subsection).
Again, this list is non-exhaustive. I've only added what I know/have seen around the internet. If you have Twine resources not included in this post, please let me know so I can add it. If I have forgotten Patreon/Ko-Fi links for any of the people mentioned above, please let me know ask well!

Tumblr media
EDITORIAL
We were always just lurkers… But no more! We were always just lurkers… But no more!
We had been talking for a while about the Interactive Fiction community, and wondering what we could to do… you know, do our part to help it become its best self.
And out of all the things available out there, between the directories and the group chats, the forums and the discord servers… it can get pretty overwhelming to be part of it all, to keep track of everything. And we realised there wasn't really a newsletter for IF. Something that tracks of what is happening…
RIGHT NOW!
So why not just… make it happen?
Like a lot of things, What's New in IF started on a whim. But we hope we can turn it into something great. Something that can help the community keep track of what's happening.
And we hope that you will join us too!
PS: we did cheat a bit on some dates for this edition :{

Tumblr media
HIGHLIGHT ON...
A couple of games that we thought were cool.
Social Democracy: An Alternate History by Autumn Chen (DendryNexus)
That weird political game that took Twitter by storm, so strongly that there's even a fan subreddit where you can share your stats. It's all about what might have been…
i won't finish this game by Naarel (RenP’y)
An emotional visual novel about being a struggling indie dev game developer and depiction of suicide in narrative games. It is very short and hits hard.
Eat Me by Chandler Groover (Inform)
It was weird, it was gross… It's just genius. There's no way to describe how insane this game is. Maybe the most disturbing escape game ever made. No wonder it's so highly rated and won awards… TG for walkthroughs!
Your favourite game here?
Do you have a favourite game that deserve some highlighting? Tell us about it! A old or recent game that wowed you so much you want to spam it to everyone? Tell us about it!
We'll add it to the page!
Tumblr media
FINAL WORD
We... don't really know what we're doing.
Yes, it's true! Not a lot of thought process went into making this. We actually started putting this together at 3-4am after making the Tumblr Blog.
We haven't really made any plan on what should or should not be included in this zine. We just knew we wished we had something like this when we started.
So while it may seem bare right now, we hope, in time, to fill all the pages, and even add more, as we find more projects, and events, and other IF- related stuff to share!
But for that…
We need your help.
Did you find a cool game that was just released? Or a project that shared a demo or update? Did you come across some cool event? Or found a neat article/blog post talking about IF?
Then, shoot us an ask or submit it on our blog!
THANK YOU!!

From the Itch page:

Palestinians are being persecuted from their homes in an ongoing genocide. Due to the armed actions of Israel, they lack access to essentials such as food, water, electricity and medical care.
In response to this crisis, all proceeds from the Palestinian Relief indie bundle will be donated to the PCRF (Palestine Children's Relief Fund). PCRF describes itself as "the primary humanitarian organization in Palestine, delivering crucial and life-saving medical relief where it is needed most". By donating to the PCRF, Palestinians will have better access to medical relief, food and water.
Want more TTRPGs? You can donate $15 to TTRPGs for Palestine.
