There’s different theories out there as to why wizards wear robes in our modern fiction but in my unprofessional opinion it’s probably because monks and priests wore robes as part of their uniforms for a long time and for a while they were basically the holders of the books and other knowledge and after a while professors and the like started wearing their graduation robes to lecture and if you’re under the impression that magic comes from study and all the book people for the last forever have been wearing robes then you’re probably gonna be putting your book magic people in robes

a mother forcing her little boy into a dress kicking and screaming would be universally and correctly seen as abusive, but a mother doing the same to a kicking and screaming little girl is a run-of-the-mill occurrence that is largely seen as a normal part of raising a female child. this double standard has been pointed out countless times by countless feminists.

but this scenario raises some questions. it's incredibly common for little girls to have tantrums about not wanting to wear dresses, skirts, and other feminine trappings, and for their mothers to force them into these things anyway. it's also a no-brainer that most 7 or 8 year old boys would react very negatively to their mothers trying to put a dress on them. why do so many children, regardless of sex, react in the same violently negative way to being put into dresses or other feminine articles of clothing (and not so much with plain t-shirts and track pants)?

it's because from a young age, they have learned that femininity is degrading. male or female, the children who react this way feel like they are being mocked and degraded when these clothes are put on them. and here's the part where liberal feminists tend to diverge from further left marxist/radical feminist views--the kids are right! we know they're right because we, the adults, only force female children--the socially deemed 'inferior' sex--to wear these clothes, and in most cases would not actually dream of making little boys wear them. the children have correctly identified that these clothes are something only children of the lower sex-class are forced to wear, and that these clothes are meant to signal their status as a member of the lower sex-class. it is considered abusive to degrade a young member of the higher sex-class in this way without his consent. not so with a female child, because they have to learn to accept their status.

femininity is inherently degrading, and female socialization is inherently abusive. femininity is a patriarchal tool which was invented to subjugate girls and women. there is no way to make it empowering.

When I was a kid my family pretended to get raptured so I would think I was left behind on earth while they all went to heaven.

I was like 8 years old and my sister and mom had gotten really into the Left Behind novels (bible fan fic about the rapture). In the books when the rapture happened the clothes that people were wearing when they got raptured were left behind in neatly folded piles.

One day when I was getting home from school my family decided that they would leave piles of neatly folded clothes around the house, and then hide in the basement.

The intended effect was that I would get home and see the clothes then, think that my family had been raptured and that I wasn’t good enough to get into heaven… or something?

The problem was that I had never read these books, and didn’t really think about the rapture very often. There was no reason that I would see some laundry on the floor and think “The rapture happened and I’ve been abandoned by God! I’ll never see my family again!! Oh nooo!!!!”

I just sat down and watched cartoons and eventually my family got bored and revealed that they were all hiding in the basement.

It’s a good thing I didn’t understand the joke, otherwise that shit would have been traumatic.
