AITA for not responding to my friend?

I (21M) am autistic and have selective mutism. That means in certain situations (like when I’m stressed or worn out) I have difficulties speaking or can’t speak at all. My friend, Lily (27F), knows this. I have told her about it many times and she’s experienced this from me in the past. She knows that I cannot speak sometimes and it’s nothing I can change no matter how much I want to. And she also knows this happens frequently in the mornings.

Lily and I work together at the same store in different departments. Our shifts start around the same time so we usually go on our second and third breaks together but not the first one. The timing of the first one varies too much for me so we usually don’t do that one together. I also am usually exhausted at that time and it’s early in the morning so I have a hard time talking. This is something Lily and I have discussed.

Today I was in the break room for my first break. It’s been a very long a frustrating week and this morning was not going well for me. So I was unable to talk. Lily came into the break room and tried talking to me. It was about some music she likes. I was caught off guard and unable to talk so I tried nodding in response but that wasn’t enough. She got really angry, yelled something along the lines of “I walked all the way back here on an injured ankle just for you not to talk to me”, and then left.

Lily’s ankle has been bothering her for a week or so now. She can walk on it alright but it’s uncomfortable. I understand this. However, I did not ask her to come back there. Usually she wouldn’t come back at that time, otherwise I could have sent a text letting her know in advance I couldn’t talk. I can’t control my selective mutism, if I could I would have chosen to respond to her. I get that it’s frustrating but I feel like I did nothing wrong and she should be more understanding of my issues. But she’s really angry over this so maybe I’m the asshole and don’t realize it.

So AITA for not responding to her?
