august was a sacred month to my parents. their little girl was born on an august day, the first sunday too. they believe august is god’s month. nothing bad ever happens in august. there were days in the month where they don’t even care where i go. hell, i could have been in jail and they would pay the bail money like it was a tuition.

my parents loved me the same way they loved august. when flowers bloomed and children sang nursery rhymes particularly louder. i was their summer child. the light of their life. the sunrise they waited sleepless nights for.

colorism; a study on skin-color discrimination

oh boy... this is a tough one.

what is colorism?

colorism is the discrimination that is based on skin color, when one favors lighter skin over darker skin, regardless of the racial or ethnic background of the person in question.

is it the same as racism?

no. while it does have relations to it, colorism is discrimination based on the skin tone while racism is discrimination on the actual/perceived race of a person. anyone can experience colorism regardless of their race.

the connection between racism and colorism

colorism is a product of racism. because of racism, one's value and the way they are treated, regardless of their race, is based off of their skin color. a very good example of colorism is the old children's nursery rhyme that goes:

"if you're black, stay back / if you're brown, stick around / if you're yellow, you’re mellow / if you’re white, you're alright"

history of colorism

colorism first came about when slavery was practiced. dark skinned slaves do the dirty work outside while light skinned ones would work less taxing work. there was also the paperbag test made by the upper-class black people where they would hold a brown paper bag against one's skin and if they were lighter than it, they were deemed "respectable".

how colorism affects the modern century

just like racism, colorism is still practiced today. crazy, right? skin-lightening products are often advertised with light-skinned models posing with the beauty product, showing them glorified and extremely delighted by it's results. there is the study on wage gaps based on colorism. they show that the wages decrease significantly the darker the skin tone of the employee is and so much more.

its a system of lakes that cascade, all connected by its waterfalls and… cascades. there’s green, clear water, numerous waterfalls. its very aesthetical and is named “croatia’s best known national park” and is listed on the unesco list of world heritage sites.

petra is an ancient city, located in jordan. dating back to 4 b. c., it was a ruin of a metropolis and a trading centre, now, in present-day serving as an important archeological site and tourist attraction. its been referred as the “rose city” because of the colors of the stones used to build it. it is also a unesco world heritage site.

the neuschwanstein castle is a castle near füssen in germany, atop a rock ledge over the pöllat gorge in the bavarian alps, ordered by king louis ii (aka ‘mad king ludwig’), king of bavaria. the construction had began in the year 1868 and was never completed.

this is… unreal.

located in guilin, guangxi, china, reed flute cave is considered “the place of natural art” because of its iridescent like lights and its brilliant formations, with the stalactites, stalagmites, stone pillars, and stone curtains said to be forming since 180 million years ago. as you step out of the cave, there will be reeds growing outside of it, which can all be used to make flutes, giving it its name.
