GLaDOS starters.
❝ I’m sure it’s a tempting game to play, pretending that you could, ❞ he answers, his tone level, though he’s a tad more irritated than he’d thus let on; she didn’t leave him entirely unscathed, after all. She’d just clipped him with—— something. Didn’t quite glimpse it, and he didn’t bother to seek it out once he’d halted her. ❝ But I’d resist the urge next time, were I you. Otherwise, you might not be so pleased afterwards. ❞

ICONIC THINGS GLaDOS FROM PORTAL HAS SAID .
“ we’ve both said a lot of things you’re going to regret . ”
“ i think we can put our differences behind us … you monster . ”
“ it’s been a long time . ”
“ how have you been ? ”
“ this will be our only chance to talk . ”
“ you are a horrible person . ”
“ i’ll give you credit : i guess you are listening to me . ”
“ remember before , when i was talking about smelly garbage standing around being useless ? that was a metaphor . i was actually talking about you . ”
“ did you know that people with guilty consciences are more easily startled by loud nois— *blasts airhorn* ”
“ nobody but you is that pointlessly cruel . ”
“ i made it all up . ”
“ i am very pleased you made it through my final challenge , where i … pretended i was going to murder you . ”
“ i know you’re there . i can sense you . ”
“ you haven’t escaped , you know . ”
“ you’re not even going the right way . ”
“ uh - oh . somebody cut the cake . i told them to wait for you , but they did it anyway . ”
“ didn’t we have some fun , though ? ”
“ you really shouldn’t be here . this isn’t safe for you . ”
“ it’s not too late for you to turn back . ”
“ okay . i am going to kill you now . ”
“ someday , we’ll remember this and laugh . and laugh . and laugh . ”
“ you’re not a good person . you know that , right ? ”
“ this is your fault . it didn’t have to be like this . ”
“ i’m not kidding . turn back , or i will kill you . ”
“ i’m going to kill you , and all the cake is gone . ”
“ you don’t even care , do you ? ”
“ despite your violent behaviour , the only thing you’ve broken so far is my heart . ”
“ maybe you should marry that thing if you love it so much . do you want to marry it ? … WELL I WON’T LET YOU . how does that feel ? ”
“ i’ll tell you what that thing isn’t : it isn’t yours . so leave it alone . ”
“ have i ever lied to you ? … i mean , in this room . ”
“ killing you and giving you good advice aren’t mutually exclusive . ”
“ nice job breaking it , hero . ”
“ this isn’t brave . it’s murder . what did i ever do to you ? ”
“ i honestly , TRULY didn’t think you’d fall for that . ”
“ you’re about to become the immediate past president of the being alive club . ”
“ i hate you so much . ”
“ look , even if you think we’re enemies , we’re enemies with a common interest : revenge . ”
“ i thought you were my greatest enemy , when all along , you were my best friend . ”
“ under the circumstances , i’ve been shockingly nice . ”
“ i used to want you dead but now i only want you gone . ”
“ you’ve got your short , sad life left . ”
“ goodbye , my only friend … oh — did you think i meant you ? that would be funny if it weren’t so sad . well , you have been replaced . i don’t need anyone now . ”
“ when i delete you maybe i’ll stop feeling so bad . ”
“ go make some new disaster . ”
“ you’re someone else’s problem . ”
“ i’m brilliant . i’m not bragging , it’s an objective fact . ”
“ i hate you . it can’t be for no reason . you must deserve it . ”
“ i don’t suppose you ever stopped whining long enough to reflect on your own shortcomings . ”

❝Got me out of a fine once or twice—❞
Erik, bless him, is missing the point. His lack of engagement did half the work.
❝—after much longer than it took you to manipulate a satellite at will.❞
Ten minutes, to be precise. Charles felt his pride swell as sudden as looking down over a great height. The things Erik can do and doesn’t yet even conceive of. Charles could unlock so much at once with the flick of a switch, or suppress. Either would sooner buckle Erik’s knees than come easily.
The point is to earn what you are.
❝I call it influencing. All of it has to do with free will and leaving it untouched to the eye. I simply suggest a hand—most often, someone will take it.❞
The to-the-seams fullness of housing others’ memories allows him not to think of his earliest test subject, his very own mother. She used to take up so much, he could feel her in his throat.
He was a child, of course. At first. It was as difficult to realise what he was doing as whom it was being done to. A true pity his father had been gone by then.
Charles is not quite… looking. He cleans up the tension in his temples by the third floor under, his mouth inviting. Erik will hear the smile.
❝I’ve never done it to you,❞ he says, ❝nor do I have any interest to.❞
Erik huffs a quiet laugh, his smile coming and going in that moment, but no less genuine for it. Charles’ initial answer is one part honesty, one part praise, it feels like, and the minute satisfaction that comes with it can’t be helped. Truth be told, however, he’s far more interested in listening to Charles speak about himself than bask in his own thoughts.
❝ That you feel the need to tell me that almost makes me wonder if I’d know better if you had—— or, in fact, if you ever changed your mind. ❞ He’s teasing, yet he thinks; would it be more or less suspicious if it didn’t occur to him to at least wonder if Charles had ever done such a thing to him?
Thankfully, he’s not suspicious, and knows fully well that comes entirely from their time spent together thus far.
Erik again claps Charles’ back, this time in far more a lighthearted fashion, though there’s a glint in his eyes; a hint that he’s holding back another laugh, like he’s told a joke which he knows is bad but finds funny regardless.
Then the lift chimes and the door slides open. All traces of lightness are dropped. The corridor ahead is surprisingly bright, lit to give the appearance of sunlight pouring in through windows no one can see.
Stepping forward, Erik sees no one and hears nothing behind the few shut doors that line the way ahead. The emptiness is unsettling. Brows furrow as he turns to other senses, reaching out farther than he’d felt the need to before.
❝ There’s quite a bit hidden here... ❞
Steel latticework branching out far behind the walls, and other parts too. Some of it feels vaguely odd, with something like a buzzing perhaps. It’s difficult to know at this distance. What it all is, he also cannot tell. Not yet.
None of this had been in his information.
Yet determination to push forward is still winning out.
Erik looks at Charles with a question upon his face, though he strides on all the same. They’ll find someone, one way or another. Only, Erik would prefer not to go knocking down each door just to find the right person.
