my cat hates taking his pills. the only way we can get him to eat them is to turn it into an elaborate pantomime - we take the packet out of the cupboard slowly and hold it up, saying “oh!! what’s this? what’s this? a TREAT? a TREAT for louis????” while making surprised faces. we offer him a pill… then, before he has a chance to sniff it, we wag our fingers at him and replace it in the packet so it becomes a Tantalising Forbidden Mystery. we continue doing this until he’s so confused and excited that he will eat the pill as fast as possible, just so he can find out what it is before we can take it away from him again. as soon as he’s eaten it he looks utterly disappointed and betrayed, like a child who just ate a delicious sweet only to find it was a chocolate-coated brussels sprout. it never gets old

I mean you would be pretty well off with books about crop keeping, harvest, foraging, code languages, etc. That's what we witches had to work with for centuries. Herbal medicine and witchcraft go hand in hand. Field work is an abundance spell. Making soup is for prosperity. Giving people pretty rocks and flowers is warning them that the reverend is watching them with suspicion. Recipes are secret rituals. High fantasy show have more mundane books than magical. You cant trust anything that claims magic. You can trust things that show mundane.

Now, if you want to go hogwild with magical books in your stories, go ahead. But if you want to use any historical basis, your best bet is looking at folk magic, cunning folk, and “pagan”* practices, not a bunch of dusty old books that are mainly going to be about crop growing. You’d also do well to look at modern witchcraft practices (but please do so respectfully, as this is someone’s belief). I really like the work of historian Owen Davies, for example, but you can find a lot of good work on this. Just be sure to check the sources (and if you’re a university student, use that interlibrary loan system to your heart’s content!).

(*Be very careful with neo-pagan beliefs, as unfortunately some them are straight up Nazis. This has burned one author I know of who should have dug a lot more deeply, and didn’t.)
