Fun fact: One of the most magical things in the 4th century Mediterranean was the palindrome. Written text was itself considered inherently magical, so words with special properties were often considered extra magical. The Greek Magical Papyri has several instances of magical palindromes. Contemporary texts would often feature mirrored nonsense words or the names of Gods with magical significance. For instance, the god Serapis would be written as SERAPISIPARES.
This has interesting implications when applied to YouTubePoop sentencemixing. Terms like SaaS and JaJ valJaaJ gain interestingly spiritual meaning.

Always love how much folklore especially creature folklore emphasizes that there is a way for you to win. These are the steps to ensure the dead don't rise: take them out through a hole in the wall and give them iron shoes. Vampires cannot abide sunlight. If you hear a dog howl on a churchyard path turn around and get home as fast as you can. Iron and salt and the colour red. None of this doomed idea, the world is incomprehensible but if you're a bit clever you'll survive it just fine, there's always ways out.

witchcraft / deity work on a budget
if you, like me, don't have a lot of money but still want to practise witch craft / give offerings to your deities, here's some general tips on how you can do all that on a budget:
you don't need to burn a whole stick of incense or a whole spell candle at once. in fact, if you light a candle or incense with a specific intent and then burn it over the course of a couple of days, it might actually be more effective. unless you're using it to banish / get rid of something, then it might be better to burn it all in one go.
on that note, you don't need fancy spell candles, a tea light with a sigil carved into it can be enough
if you want to give food offerings but can't afford to waste / not eat food, you can just invite your deity to sit with you as you eat or you can put certain ingredients associated with your deity into your food, like for example wine for dionysus. or you can give them a small crumb of your food or a small sip of your drink to symbolise a whole meal. a lot of deities will also accept simple things like water or olive oil as offerings.
also: offerings don't need to be physical, you can perform certain actions in your deities name, just look up devotional acts for your deity, there's tons of useful stuff out there.
doing creative things like writing your own prayers or making devotional art is actually probably better than most physical offerings, since you put a lot of effort and time into it and its something personal to you. it doesn't even need to be good, you just need to put love and effort into it. this is especially good for deities who rule over the arts.
if you can't buy a whole tarot deck, theres lots of free online versions you can use, or you can use a simple deck of playing cards as a substitute.
anything you find outside can be magical, you don't need to buy any spell ingredients.
feel free to add onto this if you have more tips!!!

part 2 of things i learned as a closet witch with religious parents in a third world country, let's go! (i'd like to preface this by saying that if you want any more of these, please feel free to ask me directly. i'd be more than happy to give you specific tips for specific situations!)
i can't count the spells i've made using only a singular string or piece of yarn! pick a string or a yarn ball with a specific color (if you want) and knot it as many times as it seems necessary while repeating your intentions. you can also braid it with other strings to make bracelets or keychains! i had a blue-ish bracelet i kept in my pencil case for whenever i needed a productivity boost. (can be coupled with the bead tip in the other post)
not everyone likes to cook or knows how to! so the next best option to use herbs for spells in an indirect way is to get herb-scented skincare or shampoo!! depending on your spell, take a shower, wash your hands, or apply some lotion beforehand!
if you're crafty and know how to sew, you can embroider discreet sigils or runes on the inside of your clothes. i found that doing it on the inside of pockets or sleeves works best, but you do you!
if on the other hand you do not know how to sew or don't have access to sewing supplies draw the runes/sigils with a non-permanent marker or coloring pencil! goes away in the wash and gives you an opportunity to renew it or use different runes on the same piece of clothing!
reading poetry in your native language or any book for that matter for your deities/spirits will make them feel very special. i notice then when speaking with lord lucifer i tend to do so in english but i'd like to pick up the habit of reading some khalil gebran for him every once in a while. i also devote a lot of my study sessions to lady athena and a lot of the work i do is in arabic so! pretty nice. (i know this isn't applicable for everyone, but still the idea of reading out loud in it of itself is a great act of devotion/offering)
sneak spells in books! open a book and go hunting for words, phrases, images and numbers that suit whatever you have in mind. circle them, highlight them, or draw a little star next to them! can also not be used for spells but for everyday affirmations or even meditation if you get creative!
want witchy decor without it looking too outright witchy? look at dark academia or cottage core items that can potentially have a similar vibe! that painting you found that depicts lady aphrodite? oh, you just love the history behind it. that beautiful flower pot you decorated or bought? it would look adorable paired with a funky succulent!
talking about plants, they do not need to be real. if you can't take care of a plant for whichever reason, it's okay to get a fake one. keep it clean, dust it from time to time and tuck some petitions under its pot. a plushie is not any less comforting than an actual pet! it's different, yes, but taking care of living breathing things can be daunting sometimes.
that is it for now! those are super fun to make (and a great way to procrastinate work). thank you for reading and again, if you have any questions or you want more i'd be super happy to info-dump!

Speaking generally, but when it comes to witchcraft,
if you don't have the ability to analyze what gods and/or spirits tell you,
and then make your own decisions,
you should probably not be working with gods and/or spirits.
If you don't feel comfortable saying "no," you should probably not be working with gods and/or spirits.

What is a road opener spell?
Something that really confused me as a beginner witch was 'road opener' spells. I heard people talk about these spells all the time but I had a hard time actually understanding what it meant until I did one myself. Because of that I decided to put together a little guide for all things 'road opener'. I hope this helps!
What does 'road opener' even mean?
Road opener is a type of spell to open the person up to new opportunities and to remove any blocks stopping them from obtaining those opportunities. These spells are great if you're feeling stuck. You don't have to have an opportunity in mind, you might just feel like everything is stagnant and you want things to start moving again.
What goes into a road opener spell?
Generally, these spells have 2 parts/aspects to them; removing barriers and negative energy and bringing in prosperity and new opportunities. You can do these together or seperate them into a 2 part spell, it all depend what you feel like. road opener is like a fancy name for a banishing spell mixed with a prosperity spell.
An example of a road opener spell:
Candle Spell:
A white, green or black candle (green for prosperity and growth, white as a replacement or to symbolise a fresh start or black to remove any negative energy or blocks) Black salt (to remove any negative energies or obstacles from your path) A bay leaf (for prosperity and wealth. write your intention on the leaf) A sigil with your intention cinnamon (represents wealth) cloves (protection and wealth) basil (protection and wealth) an anointing oil (note: optional) something to carve into the candle with (a sharp pencil, scissors, a paper clip, etc) a heat proof dish and candle holder Method: 1. Cleanse yourself, your work space and tools
2. Create your sigil. I like to use the intention 'All obstacles are removed from my path' or ' nothing stands in the way of my success' but it's completely up to you
3. Carve your sigil into your candle.
4. Write your intention on the bay leaf then place the candle on top of the leaf
5. Mix the remaining herbs together (except the black salt) and sprinkle them in a ring around your candle. If you wish to anoint your candle and roll it in herbs instead, this is the time to do so.
6. Place the black salt in a circle around the herbs and candle. This is to represent the banishment of any negative outside energies or to just get rid of anything that doesn't serve you anymore. You don't have to put it in a circle, it just works for me.
7. Watch the candle burn and focus your intention.
Notes: there are 1000s of ways to do this spell with all the ingredients I listed. If this spell doesn't feel right to you, don't do it or change it. It is only an example.

On what I'm going to call "peer positioning" in witchcraft, and the scary empowerment it can bring you
I think a lot of people who get into witchcraft have a problem with being able to see themselves as peers & equals to the powers they cultivate around them.
I see this most often discussed when it comes to gods. "Just because your god asks you for something doesn't mean you need to do it!" Etc. I think we've all heard that.
But today my thoughts are on the tarot, and how some people seem to treat tarot readings as "the truth" or "the answer" that then must be followed, even if they (the living, breathing, human practitioner) don't really agree or don't really want to do that.
I'm really big on the analogy of a witch as a monarch, and the concept of various powers (like gods, spirits, tools, and spells) being counselors in the throne room.
In this context, it's easier to adopt the mindset that all of these powers have their own personalities, abilities, and goals - and that they can & will provide conflicting information when you ask for advice. (Especially ancestors - so opinionated!)
Imagine Captain Picard sitting in the meeting room with Geordi, Riker, and the rest of the space nerds.
Tumblr media
Captain Picard is like, "the power core is failing and the away team is stranded on the planet. I think we should use the nebula to hide until the Gromflomites stop searching for us." And then Geordi is like, "but Captain, the engines would never make it! We have to go rescue the away team immediately!" And Captain Picard is like, "damn... Wow. I really wanted to go to the nebula, I thought it was the best choice :/ but if you're saying we literally don't have to worry about the Gromflomites..." Then Riker is like, "Captain, no. Geordi isn't saying the Gromflomites aren't a problem, he's just expressing his top concerns as Chief Engineer." And then Picard is all, "oh, so... this is conflicting information? Did that mean I did a bad reading on Geordi, or that negative spirits are stopping me from being able to communicate? Is Riker possibly a trickster?"
If you're captain of the ship, monarch of the kingdom, (etc.), then it might be important to ask yourself:
Am asking for input from my counsel of allied powers, and then making choices for myself?
Or, have I inadvertently signed over my decision-making process to these powers?
And I think it all kind of comes back to "peer positioning," or, witches being able to develop a spiritual framework within which they are equals to the powers around them.
Since beginning practicing witchcraft in earnest, I have often demanded a course of direction. Instead of asking, "how do I accomplish this?" I would ask, "what do I do?"
And the answer was the same every time, deeply infuriating, but also very scary: "Do whatever you think is best."
I think that's the problem of being the captain of the ship. Once your counselors are done giving their input, you are the one who has to make the final call.
Lately I've really been on a kick about witchcraft as a path of empowerment, and I think that viewing spiritual input as just that - input - is a vital part of the process.
Even if you are a true-blue believer in the magical power of tarot, tarot is still just one counselor sitting in your throne room.
Even if you have tutelary spirits, guardians and guides, gods and angels, providing blessings and support - they are not sitting at the head of the table.
You are.
I think that a framework of allied powers as peers and equals is relatively basic, and does have its flaws. But I also think it can be helpful in a variety of ways:
It can provide a system of understanding why allied powers can give conflicting advice, or even seemingly bad advice that doesn't align with our personal desires.
It can provide a tool for processing spiritual input.
It helps restore a sense of personal authority to a practitioner.
It can help a practitioner reclaim control of a path that's grown a mind of its own.
It aids in practicing that most oppressive of skills - liberated autonomy.
I just think it's something to consider. At the end of the day, most of us have probably got to make our own calls.
[I'm making this post because in the past few months I've been helping witches consult the tarot, and they've been giving feedback like, "so this is what I should do, right?" or, "what is it telling me to do?"
I can basically see the huge reblogs where people are explaining that a period of time where they signed complete personal autonomy over to their god was the most empowering and spiritually electric time in their lives,
and I want you to know, I'm not speaking about vows and oaths made to entities that gives them control over your life. I'm talking about situations where witches put down their autonomy so they can have both hands free to shuffle tarot.]

Tbh, I really don't use negative or positive energies in my practice. Because it's another dichotomy within my practice. I prefer it to be fluid (which I think needs to be talked about more).
While things can absolutely be negative or positive, what about neutral? there are points where the energy can be neutral.
I think of energy as different phases of matter.
Solid: the energy is stable/nonmoving or slowly changing.
Liquid: The energy is taking the shape of the vessel.
Gas: The energy is expanding past the surroundings or vessel.
Plasma: The energy is consuming and hyperactive.

ADHD Witch Tips
We need more adhd witch tips so here, have these. These are the things I have learned and seen done over the past 3 and a bit years of practicing witchcraft. As always, if you have anything to add, please comment them and I'll add them to the list with credit to you and a link to your blog!
Make witchy playlists with intention. Music is the most accessible way of doing magic in my opinion, especially if you're using spells that already exist. You can listen to these while working, traveling or just doing things around the house. If you sing along then you're adding to the manifesting power of the playlist!
Use really large spell candles so that you don't have to make a new one everytime you want to do a spell. I used to have 1 really big protection spell candle that I would light daily. Not having to make a new candle every time made me so much more likely to practice
Learn to meditate. I know, I know, hear me out. This is less of a witch tip and more of a mental health thing. You can meditate while colouring in, listening to music, cleaning, going for a walk. You don't have to sit down with your legs crossed. Mediation is an important skill that none of us do regularly enough.
stop caring about aesthetics. Are they nice? yes! absolutely! but unless it makes you more likely to practice then it's not worth it. caring too much about how your craft looks can also lead to burn out.
Be aware of your energy levels. Burn out is a serious issue among the neurodivergent witch community. Rest and pacing yourself is just as important as actually practicing.
Audio books <3333333
Try to combine your hyperfixation and witchcraft practice. This could mean using sigils in fanart or dedicate your writing to a deity.
Use hearth craft as a way to motivate you to clean your home or to cook meals/eat.
Have affirmations on your phones home screen so whenever you unlock your phone you reminded of your intentions

A tip that I think will help witches who are newer to the craft
You'll hear people talk about intent a lot. People have asked me about it before and I haven't been sure how to define it until tonight when a line from a book inspired this thought. I hope it's helpful, and I wish you well as you make progress in your sacred path.
Intent is an alignment of words and mind. Know what you are speaking and speak it on purpose, your mind and mouth united and in focus. When you speak, treat what you are saying as if it is already reality because you are speaking it, as if you are defining reality with your words. Do not speak without focus.
Disclaimer, if youve asked to be blessed with incredible wealth, that doesn't mean you should go max out your credit card (although some wise spending can sometimes assist manifestation.) Not only because you don't have the money in the moment and it would be irresponsible, but 'wealth' can mean other things than money. You can have a wealth of friendship, a wealth of freedom, wealth of health, you can be wealthy in many ways other than monitarily. It helps to be a bit specific with what you put into the universe-what you ask your guides for help acquiring and achieving.
On the other hand, don't get so specific that it becomes unworkable. You can do a spell with intent to have lunch in a country half way across the world at noon, but that is deeply unlikely to happen if not impossible. Impossibilities like this sets you up for failure, and to feel bad about yourself as a witch. You're a good witch, you just need to learn how to format your spell work.
Put your desires out there. Be flexible, because the universe works in mysterious ways and the spiritual plane is not straight forward. And, knowing that your guides want to help you live your best life, communicate with them.
Whether you do or do not want to work with your guides, I have for you,
A simple spell:
1) Write your desires on a note card. Focus on that desire as you write. A few mistakes are forgivable, what matters is focus and energy.
2) Light a candle, choose a color that, to you, represents a wish granted. For me that might be light blue, for others it might be yellow, gold, silver, white, orange, or green. Any choice is good as long as it makes sense to you.
3) Take a deep breath, place the note card in the flame over a fire safe surface and visualize the smoke as the energy releasing from your wishes to act upon the universe, to manifest those desires into your active reality.

Witchy Self-Care
*pulls out draft from over a year ago* ENJOY
Hi! this is a list of witchy self-care things you can do. Most of these are pretty basic on account that i wrote this ages ago but they definitely still work. Anyways, I hope these help :)
Do the dishes and dedicate it to your house spirit (if you have one) or a deity (if you're religious)
sweep/mop your floor in the shape of sigils
add rosemary (or rosemary water/essential oils) to the water you mop with to set an intention of cleansing
taking ritual a bath/shower
cleansing your energy. it's so basic but I forget more than i'd like to admit
dedicating time to yourself. it's just as important as dedicating time to your deities/other spirits
light shadow work or going to therapy. bettering your mental health also betters your spiritual.
go outside and ground yourself
take a nap (less witchy, more, I love naps. rest is important)
work out/stretch and dedicate it to an entity
do some gratitude
take 5 minutes to just sit and turn off your devices. you can use this time for anything, just take a second to get off screens and connect with the world around you
meditate. if you can't sit still long enough to meditate, just focus on taking 3 deep breathes
when you wash your face, draw sigils on your face with the cleanser and moisturiser
^do the same as above but with your body wash and when you wash your hair
say some affirmations/manifestations while brushing your teeth
just check in with yourself and see how you're feeling spiritually, psychically and emotionally. sometimes we don't actually know how we're feeling until we sit down and actually ask ourselves.
If anyone has any more to add please comment. I'll add them to the list (with credit of course)

CIRCLE TIP:
I know books from the seventies would have you believe otherwise, but you don't have to mentally hold circle for the whole ritual, and you don't have to physically mark the whole circle boundary, nor do you need a coven member to hold space. You can put regular old rocks at each of the cardinal directions along the walls of your room or along the outer perimeter of the sacred space and use those as anchor points for the energy you lay.
Start by gathering, cleansing, and sanctifying/consecrating/blessing/charging/whatever four stones of any shape and size that suits your needs. Larger stones are good if you want them to be a visible reminder of the boundaries of circle, but smaller ones are good for discretion. Anoint them with a protection oil if you'd like (I only recommend doing this if you are using them indoors with no animals around), and/or pencil protection sigils on them. Cast circle but make sure your energy hits each stone and runs through it. If you call in the quarters, invite them to reside in their respective directional stones. Boom, done, now you have an easily marked sacred space that doesn't need constant maintain.
And, fun fact, circle doesn't HAVE to be round. Round is easiest when you're using mental energy to hold the space, but if you use physical barriers like existing walls then your cast energy resides in that physical block and is held automatically. I especially love doing this as a quasi-permanent marker to sanctify an entire room because any doorways become defacto entrances/exits that spiritually open and close when physically opened and closed.
Okay but isn't this being lazy? NO you rude hypothetical, it's not. It's being resourceful. Using these physical anchors allows a solitary practitioner to put their focus towards other things. I use this method when I'm studying magic texts, or so I can hang out with my ancestors and spirit friends casually for extended periods of time, or if I am going to be attempting astral projection. And by "I use this method," I mean it is one of the permanent protections I have in place in my home.
Has anyone else tried this? Please share any experiences or circle hacks you might have!
