catching up on inktober with some more warrior cats

I’m going to lump these two together since I got them about the same time and are both about pelt patterns. I’ll assume it’s from the same person since I rarely get things in my inbox

I’m also going to ignore the condescending sarcasm

I have clearly stated on my blog that these designs will not reflect canon and the main focus is my own headcanon and being easy to draw with clear body shapes, in other words, animation friendly.

I have never aimed to make realistic cats because I see creating these designs as a fun character design exercise. I want to experiment with colors and shapes that would be absolutely impossible cuz why not.

Calico ^

Tortie ^

I have intentionally made Spottedleaf a calico instead of a tortie due to the complexity of the patches you would find in torties. Many artists, in fact, draw her as a calico for that reason. It’s fine to go all the way with splotches and such when it’s a simple art piece but when it’s for animation, splotches should be kept to a minimum.

Though it’s a little more accurate, I would never want someone to draw this over a hundred times and keeping all the markings consistent without drifting (aka animate it). 

The good thing about keeping design refs simple is that you can easily make it more complex since you know the large, key markings that you can keep and expand upon, in fact, many do make it more complex when drawing the design due to adapting it into their own art style.

However, making the base ref complex with needless markings will only overwhelm or turn heads away from doing the design. It would be harder to figure out key shapes and things to keep when simplifying them into something more manageable. Complex designs also may not adapt well to other art styles since they can be very cluttered or not fit with that person’s art.

This principle can be applied to all of my designs and any other designs out there. Keep things simple, then you can make it more complex later on.

Or a proportion change

The beauty of warrior cats is that we all interpret characters differently. Your Firestar will be different from someone else’s and we express that difference through art and writing. The canon is also not the end all be all. Heck Bluestar in the books is long-haired unlike how she is usually depicted in the fandom which is short-haired, long, and slender

I am not going to box myself in and only mold my art to fit canon / how they are usually depicted and real cats. There is so much potential when you don’t force yourself to fit into a mold.

The apprentice's quest chapters 1-2 thoughts

Damn, I just started reading apprentice's quest and I feel so bad for Alderpaw. I literally cried qwq

Don't you worry, kid, it's gonna be ok! (I love this anxious boi)

And Sparkpaw is doing too good, what apprentice catches 2 pieces of prey on their two first tries? She is like Bramblestar and Squirrelflight combined. I see her acting like Squirrelflight, but less clumsy.

I love how Alderpaw's and Sparkpaw's characters are shown, I like them and look forward to reading more chapters.

Also, with every arc I see the territories differently. The view changes with new arcs, new characters. PoT forest (thunderclan territory) is thick and dark for me, Oots forest is the opposite, and avos forest is like combining pot and oots forests together, also it's gloomy in some parts but the light is lightning the forest up, creating a nice atmosphere.
