Notes on Gaston Leroux’s „The Phantom of the Opera“ - Chapter 3: „In which, for the first time, Debienne and Poligny secretly give the new managers of the Opera, Armand Moncharmin and Firmin Richard, the real and mysterious reason for their departure from the National Academy of Music“

<< Previous Chapter
This chapter introduces us to the antics of our favourite Opera Ghost and his new managers, Armand Moncharmin and Firmin Richard (not Richard Firmin as in the ALW version). The focus shifts once more to the crowd gathered in the “Foyer de la Danse”, where everyone’s (except Little Jammes’) mood has been somewhat sombered by the news of Buquet’s death. La Sorelli is awaiting the managers’ arrival to the Foyer so that she can give her speech, and the rest of the ballet dancers - most of them still in costume - gather around her or have gone off in search of the buffet.
It is noticed that the outgoing managers, Debienne and Poligny, appear quite cheery, and while everyone in the party assumes that their cheeriness is “but a mask to hide their sorrow”, we can assume that they are indeed cheery because they no longer have to deal with the phenomenon of the “opera ghost” and his antics. Then, quite suddenly, their fear returns when little Jammes cries out “The Ghost!” in terror and points to a man among the crowd with a face with deep, hollow eyes that seems to resemble a skull. The company started to laugh at her outbreak, but when they try to find the man among the crowd, he has already vanished like a true spectre.

A little later, a farewell supper party takes place in the lobby of the managers’ office, where both the outgoing managers Debienne and Poligny and their replacements, Moncharmin and Richard take part. Both pairs of managers hardly knew each other, which results in one half the party being unacquainted with the other half. This makes it possible for the man who had already appeared in the Foyer de la Danse to mingle with the rest of the guests and find himself a seat at the table. Even though no one knew who he was, everyone assumed that he belonged to the other circle of acquaintances. He does neither eat nor drink, but is apparently killing the mood, as he evokes “only darkness and gloom”. Some of the guests even connect the apparition with the fabled “opera ghost”, but notice that even though the ghost is rumoured to have no nose, the gloomy guest at the table had one which was “long, thin and transparent”. Leroux concludes that it was probably a false nose, but that no one can be really sure if the “Phantom of the Opera” was bold enough to crash their supper party, even though he deems it possible.
It is remarkable that during these first chapters, the Opera Ghost seems to appear without his mask both among the crowds and at the dining table. Overall, even without his mask he apparently looks a little ghostly, although more sad and mournful instead of truly terrifying. Those appearances seem a little random though, and I believe this is because here, Leroux is presenting stories he might have been told during his investigation into the „Opera Ghost“ legend and mingling them with his fictional plot. According to Leroux, the information presented here was taken from “Memoirs of a Manager” by Armand Moncharmin.
Even though the “ghost” does not eat, he suddenly breaks the news of Buquet’s death possibly being “not quite natural”, which again deeply agitates Debienne and Poligny. The four managers enter the managers’ office together, where the outgoing managers break the news of the “opera ghost” haunting the opera house, causing “fantastic or dreadful” occurrences whenever his demands are ignored. Moncharmin and Richard do not take them seriously and can hardly contain their urge to laugh. They are also shown the book of instructions, where additional paragraphs in red ink and a childlike handwriting have been added to stipulate that the Phantom of the Opera receives a monthly salary of 20,000 francs, and that Box 5 must be at the disposal of the Phantom at all performances.
Erik’s writing being “like a child’s suggests that he never had a formal education, but still probably taught himself how to read and write.
It is evident that Debienne and Poligny are leaving because of the financial strain that comes with the ghost’s salary and the loss of Box 5 and their unwillingness to put up with the ghost any longer, but they also state that they can’t do anything about him because no one has ever seen him.
Moncharmin and Richard are very much disinclined to believe the story about the “opera ghost”…

Can ANYONE help me please? Im searching for a book that i forgot the name of, and its driving me crazy, i dont think i can sleep anymore without knowing what book this is
So here’s the description:
It was a fantasy novel, set in Scandinavian society I think, it had two main male characters, one of them was a viking with a tragic back story, he lost his wife and children in a war with a neighboring village, so he moved away, and the other guy was some sort of a prince, he was rich i think, and the where under this spell that compelled them to stay close to each other, like if they were apart for a period of time, they became weak
I remember one specific scene, the two men were running away from guards that wanted to arrest them, and they took refuge in an inn, the viking drank a lot of beer but the other man had an argument with him about it and went upstairs to sleep, but they soon had to run away because the inn keeper ratted them out to the guards
And there’s another scene where they’re hiding in a massive stone castle, it’s winter so it’s very cold, and that’s where the viking shares his back story with the other man, how his family was killed
