That blond guy in Devilman Saga

No, I’m not speculating about his True Identity this time - I’m just gonna talk about his name, because it’s a bit confusing!

The name of the blond guy in the original Devilman manga is Asuka Ryou, 飛鳥了. Asuka (飛鳥) is his family name and Ryou (了) is his given name.

The blond guy in Devilman Saga is Ryou Asuka (竜アスカ). His family name is Ryou (竜) and his given name is Asuka (アスカ). Note that the kanji is different -  竜 is usually pronounced ‘ryuu’ and means ‘dragon’, but in this case it’s pronounced ‘ryou’. Asuka is simply written in katakana, giving the pronunciation but not the meaning.

However, Ryou Asuka in Devilman Saga changes his name to 竜大路アスカ, Ryuuooji Asuka (Ryuuooji being the surname and Asuka still being his given name). For this reason I typically tag him as Ryuuooji Asuka, because it’s slightly less confusing than Asuka Ryou vs Ryou Asuka.
