Yesterday with these two @lizzstonem @alainamf_ 💕 I drove us from Chalmette through the city, past the French Market and the Superdome to the River Walk for some shopping and photo booth fun. Then we took the ferry across the Mississippi to Algiers and back like our grandfather used to do. We hopped on a streetcar down on Carrollton and rode all the way up St. Charles to The Quarter and back. Sister Date with Melissa 💕 Beignets at Café Du Monde (powdered sugar everywhere!), a long walk through Spanish moss-covered oaks at City Park, the Francingues family plot in Cypress Grove Cemetery (one of the few places in the world where you can find our name), and a little time at the shore of Lake Pontchartrain. It’s been 12 years since we’ve seen each other in person, as this beauty lives in Germany. The Francingues Sisters 💗💗💗 So happy to be together again! Oh how I’ve missed these beauties @lizzstonem @alainamf_ All three of us are finally reunited after 12 years, now ages 19, 29, and 39. Last night, our Sicilian great-uncle DJ Latino and beautiful Aunt Pat @patricialatino (our grandmother’s sister) made an absolutely delicious Italian meal to start off our family reunion.🍝 We talked and laughed like we’d never been apart. 🥰 Now we’re off to the French Quarter today with Dad and Belinda to explore and eat beignets (IYKYK!). Benefits of a long-lasting, massive power outage due to our first spring storm: 1. Beautiful candlelight 2. Nope, that’s really it… The house is currently looking like a scene from Phantom of the Opera, and I’m not mad about it. 🕯️🕯️🕯️ But trying to pack and clean in the dark ahead of a last-minute trip is no easy feat! I showered by lantern light and ate apples and peanut butter next to glowing candles so as not to open the fridge. Just a moment ago, I was carrying my lantern up the stairs and felt very much like an Edwardian lady. It truly makes me appreciate our forefathers who lived without the convenience of home electricity, not really that long ago. Now the house smells of various candle scents (“Silver Cedar”, “Velvet Orchid and Honey”), and everywhere there are little shadows dancing around like golden ballerinas. Sorry I’ve been MIA on all platforms — life has been… just wonderful. I am completely besotted and totally in love with this tiny human. Last night he met Poppy, Cooper and Ako at Marmee and Sir’s house and got his first sink bath. He smelled like love and lavender. Even though I surprisingly didn’t cry throughout sissy’s labor (too focused), or when I got to hold him for the first time (too tired 😂), I finally cried when I held him last night (relieved at how healthy he is, mesmerized by how beautiful he is, and so exquisitely happy). @baileyboodlepoodle @thisisjgrantf I’ve never been prouder of you. 2/365 ✨ 2 janvier 2023 🌙 Today is our last day at the cabin; we leave by 4. I finished a book and a cup of coffee on the swing this morning, and after that, a final meander around the property. It was strangely alive for the second of January. Only a week ago, this hillside was covered in deep gloom as winter storm Elliot brought with him a blanket of snow and temperatures -3 degrees below zero. But reprieve has come, and along with her brought a little surge of life: intermittent sunshine playing behind clouds, tiny mushrooms popping up in the rich moisture of the melted snow, even a sprinkle of premature dandelions complete with visiting ants and small bees out of season. Bluebirds, sparrows, and cardinals dot around, scratching with their feet and chirping contentedly in a collective sigh of relief. There is a steady but gentle breeze, and squirrels play in the barren branches above. Linus is napping in a spot of sun. Before preparing for departure, I decided to forage a little sample of beauties and create a memory: a spotted leaf, dry seed pods, a tiny mushroom, a dandelion, and sawdust from the campfire wood pile, all set among a cabin sign, a strip of mossy bark, the velvety deerskin from the living room, and the lichen-covered picnic table. I can take a snapshot of these things, but what I cannot capture is the sound up here. From the porch I often hear birds, wind, critters moving, an airplane or chainsaw, the sounds of the swing, an occasional voice or passing car or tractor from down the hillside, or Garret whistling inside. But at times, when I am perfectly still, there is only quiet — something I don’t get to experience at my house in the heart of my town. That is something I wish I could bottle up and take home. I used to always fill the air with some sound, whether it be a Spotify playlist or a vinyl record, an audiobook or YouTube video. I think I was trying to drown out my own brain. But the older I get, the more I appreciate listening to *nothing*. It is rare, and usually means I had a moment where there wasn’t anything pressing on me. So, like a snapshot of a bee or a stone in a pocket, the sound of “nothing” is also something to remember. Another sweet baby off the streets today! We have seen this gorgeous girl around the neighborhood for quite some time… today was the day she let me hold her and feed her. She was sweet as pie! When I saw that a tempête hivernale was on the way, I finally ordered Jamie Beck’s “An American in Provence” (a book I’ve been wanting before it was even released) to be a cozy companion for the snow-in, and she arrived just in time. Today after Zoom service, before making an enormous pot of beef stew to last days and some buttery cookies dusted with sparkling white sugar to resemble the snow outside, I settled down on the couch with my book, my Linus, and my blanket, and dove into the richness of Jamie’s poetic writing and painting-like photography. So happy to be celebrating these two parents-to-bee 🐝 and their little hunny 🍯 at their Hundred Acre Wood baby shower today. Major kudos to my brilliant momma for all of her hard work, and to many others who lent a helping hand — thank you! Today I learned how to make a balloon arch, and it was a lot of fun. 🎈Also finished the mobile (with detachable toys for later) that I made for Raleigh, and that project was one of my favorites ever.
