november 20th ~ beginnings ((this feels a bit summery for november but w/e)) what is beginning here? an adventure maybe? a holiday? honeymoon? the beginning of a new era? their newfound tolerance towards each other? where are the going? what are the running towards, or from? what will come next?

this theme has so many interpretations and opportunities: ‘beginnings’ to me seemed like such a positive theme that it just leapt at me. hopefully it gives you a similar optimistic feeling

Yes, YES to ALL of this

With the part about Mello and Near being close before being put into a direct competition with each other, I headcannon Mello being one of the very few people who wanted to hang out and play with Near and would stand up to any bullies who tried to pick on him.

I headcannon Near asked to play one day and Mello said he would in the afternoon after he's played some games with Matt. Near is happy with that and in the afternoon waits for Mello. But he never shows up.

He never shows up because, on the way, Mello saw the test scores and saw Near scored higher than him. Mello never shows up because he started hearing other kids saying "Holy crap the new weird kid beat Mello", "Mello's not the smartest one anymore", "He got a score of 100%, he's definitely going to become the new L."

And that was it for their friendship

Random blorbo headcanons as I wake up.

I think Near was very young when he came to stay at Wammys, around 4 or so. His parents died when he was very young and he has no memory of them, and his extended family bounced him around from place to place until he had been through all of them and they gave him up.

While he needs to be reminded food is a thing he needs because he will literally ignore his body's cues because he's busy, he eats same foods until he gets burned out on them and suddenly he cant stand them anymore. And new food hyperfixations have to be found. (autistic me projecting onto my blorbo? never...)

Before he and Mello were put into direct competition, they were actually quite close, which made the one sided rivalry and Mello's words as he departed sting all the more.

In canonverse he arranged for both Mello and Matt's funerals and burials. He keeps Mello's rosary (and possibly Matt's goggles because my ot3 heart says so) in a small box to talk to them in lieu of going to visit their graves.

In a happier universe, he still grows his hair out, because he wants to instead of depression. Mello insists on putting it in a french braid for him. He says it's because he's tired of finding abandoned scrunchies all over the place, but Near's pretty sure his boyfriend just enjoys doing it.

He has a very chaotic system for organizing things that no one but him is really sure of. HE thinks it makes perfect sense. His team members and Mello (again in a happier universe) just want to be able to find shit they're looking for.

Also, had he not been raised to be a detective and gotten to choose his own path in life, he probably would have wanted to be an architect.

Totally unrelated to the event but uh why do you guys like Meronia? What's even the appeal? As far as I know Mello hates Near lol .

I can give you a list of reasons why. To be honest, it varies from person to person, even among Meronia shippers. Their dynamic is more complex than what meets the eye. You should also read the manga for full context.

But does it really matter, especially to you? Love is just love.

Why do people like Meronia? What even is the appeal?

Mello hates Near, yada yada yada.

This all sounds like it comes from someone who hasn't properly understood, dissected and evaluated Mello's character.

If I were to ask you what does Mello hate about Near. About him specifically, what would you put on that list? Would you have much of a list?

Mello doesn't like that Near is better than him and has threatened his position as L's successor ever since arriving at Wammy's, but I want to know, what does Mello not like about Near specifically? His character, his personality, him.

If you do have something on the list, I ask again, is it Mello's version he is seeing from misunderstanding?

Like is Mello seeing it only from his point of view and is actually misunderstanding something about Near because he can only see Near as a threat to his goal?

As an example, the gun scene in the SPK. The only time we see Mello become angry directly at Near, it's after Near thanked him for his help which lead Mello to misunderstand and think Near was using him as a tool. Which wasn't the case at all. Near was actually being genuine but said it in such a monotone way it came off sarcastic.

If you read the Manga and seen Mello's reaction when he learned that Near planned to write his own name in the Death Note, that wasn't hate.

Mello hates the threat Near is against his goal, but he doesn't hate him as a person.

As for what the appeal is, thats up to each individual like mentioned before.

So whenever someone updates their fic, the ONLY way an author knows who their regular readers are is if they comment on each chapter. And we WANT to know who's still reading.
