Afterword

The Lunacy of Duke Venomania, afterword

In front of you is a lamp. Or maybe just the drawer of a desk.

It is a magical lamp that was excavated from the ruins of some country somewhere. Or else it’s the entrance to a time machine that leads to the future.

When you rub the lamp, a genie appears from inside. Or perhaps it’s an earless cat robot.

That genie, or robot, tells you that they will grant one wish that you have, no matter what it is.

So then, what do you wish for?

“I want to be pampered by members of the opposite sex”? “I want to be able to eat delicious foods”? “I want to rule the world to be as I wish it”? “I want to be able to rest and not have to work”? “I want to be able to crush my rivals”? “I want to become rich”?

Or, “I want revenge on the person that ruined my life”?

The protagonist of this book, Sateriasis Venomania, picked one of those answers.

Was he a villain drowning in lust, or was he a victim tossed around by fate? The answer doesn’t come through here. I have no way of knowing the answer in the first place.

Only, he had a lot of opportunities to stop what he was doing. To not do so was his own choice, and regardless of whether he wished it or not, his actions invited the fate that befell him in the end.

If you were in his position, and you had obtained the power that you’d desired, what sort choices would you make?

Leaving that conversation to the side.

This book, “The Lunacy of Duke Venomania” may be a member of the “VOCALOID light novel” genre (though I don’t know if that genre definitively exists or not), but there was hardly any appearances from Kagamine Rin and Len (none from Len at all, in fact), who were members of the main cast in all the works up to this point.

Though I’d planned to have Rin (or as she goes in the story, Rindo Blum) have a slightly more active role in the book…During the development of the story I wound up having to whittle down on her appearance, as she didn’t show up in the original song.

Well, I think I’ll be able to have those two show up more in the next book (if I can get it published alright, that is).

My gratitude goes out to all of the illustrators who depicted the world of the book with such wonderful pictures, and the publishers who provided their assistance in editing while compiling the book.

And many heartfelt thanks to all of the readers who bought this book and read it.

Manga Scenario Book-Chapter 5; Scene 5

Venomania Estate/Basement Harem

Narration: “…But that is for a later story.”

.

Duke Venomania sits in a chair in a room in his basement harem and smiles. Around him are Lukana, Mikulia, and Gumina.

.

Narration: “At this time, the kidnapped women have exceeded fifteen in number, and that number would continue to increase hereafter.”

.

The door to the room opens, and a new figure appears. Her appearance is backlit in a silhouette and so can’t be seen clearly, but it is a woman. Duke Venomania stands and goes to receive her.

.

Narration: “There are many theories on the final number of disappeared women; some say that it was around twenty, while others claim it was over a hundred. The true number isn’t clear.”

.

IR looks down on the outside from the window in another room in the mansion.

.

Narration: “Most of them were released after Duke Venomania’s death, but there were some who were found dead in his mansion. It is said that among those that were released, several were pregnant.”

.

The woman appearing before Venomania is Lilien, dressed in a feminine fashion.

The two gaze at each other, and then kiss. Her friend, Lukana, sees this and smiles.

Venomania: “Come, let’s dance, Lilien. In my harem.”

.

Narration: “Sateriasis Venomania.”

Narration: “The story of his lunacy—”

Narration: “—Is not over.”

Manga Scenario Book-Chapter 5; Scene 4

Town of Mystica/Alleyway (Day)

Rajih is sitting down in an alleyway, having gotten blind drunk around lunchtime.

Rajih: “Lilien…”

Narration: “--Lilien hadn’t returned since that day.”

People walk by Rajih while looking at him doubtfully.

Rajih: “That bastard took her away. It’s obvious. And yet—no one will believe me.”

Rajih: “On the contrary, for some reason everyone has completely forgotten that he even came to this town. Including Lilien’s parents.”

Rajih implores the heavens.

Rajih: “Am I the one who’s crazy? Did I just hallucinate something like everyone’s been saying--?”

Rajih: “—No way.”

Rajih: “That night, what happened at that mansion. I really did discover the dead bodies of Earl Ferdinand and his family…”

While staggering, Rajih tries to rise to his feet.

Rajih: “…Should I head there, rather? To that Duke’s mansion in Lasaland?”

But his legs are unsteady, and he once more sits down on the ground.

Rajih: “Hahaha…No way I’d manage that. I’m a peasant. And I’d be up against someone who’s both a regional lord and a monster to boot.”

Rajih finally sprawls out on the spot.

Rajih: “And supposing, supposing. That Lilien went to Duke Venomania’s side of her own volition…”

Lilien’s face flashes in his mind.

Rajih: “…There’s not a thing I can do about it now.”

Karchess: “So you’re just going to give up?”

At some point, Karchess comes to be standing by his side.

Rajih listlessly lifts his body.

Rajih: “Ngh…Who’re you?”

Karchess: “Your love has gone missing, and yet instead of searching for her you’re here liquor-soaked at midday. What a pathetic man you are.”

Rajih: “…She’s not my love. She’s a childhood friend.”

Karchess: “I see. Well, it doesn’t matter. You are Rajih, yes?”

Rajih: “Yeah. I am…But I still don’t know you—"

Karchess: “I want to hear your story. I want to hear all you know on Lilien Turner and Sateriasis Venomania.”

Rajih: “So tell me your name then first, you blue haired bastard!”

Karchess: “…Karchess Crim. Satisfied?”

Rajih: “Yeah, sure. And I’ve got nothing to tell you, asshole. Goodbye!”

Karchess grabs Rajih’s shoulder as he tries to stand up.

Karchess: “Wait a moment. Depending on the circumstances I could very well be your savior.”

Rajih: “…You’re a foreigner, huh? Well, guess that’s not uncommon around these parts—”

Karchess: “I’m from Marlon. And I suppose I could say that by rights I’m not the kind to speak on equal terms with a peasant like yourself.”

Rajih: “Course. I could tell that from your disagreeable way of speaking.”

Karchess: “For now, I have three things that you lack. The first is my status. The second is the strong will to retrieve the one that I love. And the third—”

Karchess takes a golden key from his pocket and shows it to Rajih.

Karchess: “—Is a weapon that can defeat even demons.”

Narration: “Karchess Crim—”

Narration: “A man who would go on to vanquish Duke Venomania and release all the women—”

Narration: “This visitor from across the sea.”

Beelzenian Empire/Imperial Castle (Day)

Princess Maylis is sitting down in a chair in the castle’s audience hall and listening to a report being given by a cabinet minister.

Minister: “…And so, we still haven’t managed to glean any clues on the missing women—”

Maylis: “…”

A new figure (approximately 30 years old) enters the room there.

Maylis: “Oh my, Baron Conchita. I’m surprised to see you here…”

Baron Conchita: “My lady. A report has come in from the Marlon noble we’d been discussing.”

Baron Conchita pulls out a sheet of paper.

Baron Conchita: “Shall I read it to you?”

Maylis: “…It’s alright, I’ll read it myself. Hand it over.”

Maylis turns to the cabinet minister.

Maylis: “Thank you. I’ll hear the rest later.”

The minister nods once and leaves the room.

Maylis takes the paper from the baron and starts to read.

Maylis: “Ho ho, this has become quite interesting.”

Maylis stands and turns around.

And then mutters to herself so that the Baron can’t hear.

Maylis: “…Maybe I’ll sneak out of here~”

Narration: “The third princess of the Beelzenian Empire, Maylis Beelzenia—”

Narration: “She too would fall into Duke Venomania’s clutches later.”

Manga Scenario Book-Chapter 5; Scene 2

Earl Ferdinand’s Mansion/Drawing Room (Day)

Nephew: “My apologies for the gatekeeper’s poor manners. Well, it’s all after such an awful thing, yes? Can hardly be helped…”

Karchess: “…I heard about how your whole family was murdered.”

Nephew: “Including the servants… Thanks to that I’ve been transferred to this hick town--Ah, beg pardon, pretend you didn’t hear me say that.”

Karchess: “What was the killer’s motive?”

Nephew: “There is one person that’s attracted suspicion. Shortly after my uncle and his family’s dead body was discovered, a woman disappeared from town.”

Karchess: “—Lilien Turner.”

Nephew: “Exactly. You are certainly well informed. However—”

Karchess: “--You have no proof?”

Nephew: “Rather, there’s no point of connection in the first place. Between uncle Ferdinand, a noble, and Lilien, a baker. There’s no mention anywhere that either of them had any relationship.”

Karchess: “And Lilien’s whereabouts?”

Nephew: “Completely unknown. Apparently there’s no one who even saw her leaving town.”

Karchess: “…”

Nephew: “That serial disappearance of women case that you’re investigating. The same circumstances as all the other women.”

Karchess: “Has anyone said anything about anyone else coming into town before or after the incident?”

Nephew: “Not at all.”

Karchess: “Truly?”

Nephew: “…Actually, there is one person giving a different testimony from the others.”

Karchess: “Who is it?”

Nephew: “A man named Rajih who’s an acquaintance of Lilien’s…It’s just a lot of bluster. He’s probably just gotten touched in the head from having his childhood friend vanish so suddenly—That’s what everyone who knows him is saying.”

Karchess: “And what exactly is he claiming?”

Nephew: “That the person who murdered Earl Ferdinand and kidnapped Lilien was Duke Venomania.”

Karchess: “…”

Nephew: “It’s nonsense. The duke has never visited this town. No one’s seen him here.”

Narration: “The town of Mystica, after several months.”

Town of Mystica/Earl Ferdinand’s Mansion (Day)

Karchess, who is trying to visit the Ferdinand Estate, is being stopped by the gatekeeper.

Gatekeeper: “Beg pardon, but what business do you have here? You’ll need an appointment to—”

Before the gatekeeper has finished speaking, a voice speaks up from behind him.

Ferdinand Nephew: “Ah, this one’s alright, it’s fine. Come right in.”

The gatekeeper obeys, and moves aside.

Nephew: “It is good to meet you, Sir Karchess Crim. I’ve received word from Princess Maylis.”

Town of Mystica/Bakery (Morning)

Rajih awakes in bed. Apparently he was put to sleep on Lilien’s father’s bed.

He gets up and heads for Lilien’s room.

Rajih: “I did it. I protected her!”

Rajih staggers, his injuries still not healed.

Rajih: “And I’ve finally realized what words I need to say to her.”

Rajih opens the door to Lilien’s room.

Rajih: “I won’t run away any longer. I want to be honest with you.”

Rajih looks shocked upon looking inside the room.

Rajih: “About my true feelin—“

The room is completely empty, and the window is open.

Town of Mystica/Outskirts (Night)

Venomania and IR are walking along towards Lasaland.

IR: “…You’re fine with this?”

Venomania: “What?”

IR: “That woman—you were planning to take her with you, weren’t you?”

Venomania closes his eyes and smiles.

Venomania: “…I’ll let her decide what she’ll do next.”

IR: “…Hmph.  A villain like you?”

Venomania: “Let’s hurry back to Lasaland. The women are probably awaiting my return with great anticipation.”

IR: “Then we should get a carriage promptly. It’s a pain to walk on foot like this.”

Venomania: “We should be able to arrange for a carriage in the next town up, even this time of night.

The lights of a small town are visible in the direction they’re headed.

Venomania: “I’ll make sure to love my girls plenty when we get back.”

IR: “Before that, Tette Cetera. We have to pay that female officer back for handing me fake information.”

Venomania: “I see…I’ll have her receive my love as well.”

IR: “…You rotten lech.”

Coming home, Lilien’s father is shocked to see both her and a wounded Rajih carrying her.

Father: “Hey! What the hell’s happened!?”

Rajih: “I’m fine…Get Lilien to a bed…”

Rajih hands Lilien off to her father, and then once more falls unconscious.

Rajih wakes up.

Rajih: “…I’m…alive…”

Venomania is long gone, and Lilien is still standing there in a catatonic stupor.

Rajih: “…Lilien!”

While pulling along his body covered in wounds, Rajih picks up Lilien and leaves the room.

Manga Scenario Book-Chapter 4; Scene 5

Earl Ferdinand’s Mansion/Hallway (Night)

IR in her red cat form is walking through the hall.

Narration: “He fell in love with that girl.”

Narration: “These feelings never faded, even after several decades had passed.”

Narration: “However, that love came to meet its end in the worst possible way for him.”

IR notices a figure walking up ahead of her.

Narration: “It was when he learned—of the engagement between Gumina and his younger brother.”

The figure is Venomania, having returned to human form.

Narration: “His heart was completely broken.”

IR sidles up to Venomania.

Narration: “One day, after some time had passed, a white-haired sorceress who had come to visit the mansion saw a ghastly murder scene.”

The sprawled corpses of Venomania’s father and his second wife inside the mansion. There is another  corpse, either Venomania or his brother judging by the hair, but as its facedown it’s impossible to tell.

(Recollection)

Narration: “The sorceress gave the young man that was the sole survivor a sword. That was something with which one could make a contract with a forbidden demon.”

A full image of the sword.

Narration: “The young man accepted it.”

Venomania stabs the sword into his chest. The same as in the beginning of the story. (Recollection)

Narration: “—The demon incarnate, Sateriasis Venomania, was thus reborn.”

Manga Scenario Book-Chapter 4; Scene 4

Earl Ferdinand’s Mansion/Bedroom (Night)

Rajih is worn out, covered in wounds and blood.

He picks up his fallen sword, but the blade is already broken.

But even so, Rajih still moves to stand against Venomania.

Venomania: “…Why? Why go this far?”

Venomania asks Rajih with a serious expression.

Venomania: “Are you Lilien’s boyfriend? …No. I haven’t heard anything like that from her.”

Rajih: “…”

Venomania: “Even if you stole Lilien from me, you wouldn’t be able to win her over, isn’t that right? It’d be a pointless—”

Rajih: “Duke…Have you ever truly loved someone?”

Venomania: “--!?”

Rajih: “I know that I won’t be rewarded for it…But there are times when a man must act even so!”

Rajih once more slashes at Venomania with the broken sword.

But he runs out of strength as he brings up the sword, and then passes out.

Venomania: “…”

Venomania looks down on the fallen Rajih.

Venomania: “…’Have you ever truly loved someone’?”

After taking a glance at Lilien behind him, Venomania walks towards the entrance to the room.

In his mind’s eye, he sees a flash of Gumina’s face when she was young.

Venomania: “…I have.”

Then Venomania departs, leaving Lilien and Rajih behind.

Manga Scenario Book-Chapter 4; Scene 3

Venomania Estate/Basement Harem (Night)

Gumina continues to play the violin.

Narration: “—One day, a lone boy came into his life in the basement.”

Narration: “Then, for the first time, he learned that he had a younger brother.”

A boy has come to the basement prison. His face looks identical to the current Venomania. You can’t see Venomania’s face (recollection).

Narration: “He was the son of his father and his father’s second wife.”

Gumina continues to play music.

Narration: “Unlike him, the younger brother had beautiful features, and had a kind heart besides.”

Narration: “During the night, he would secretly take him to the world above, behind his households’ back.”

Venomania and his younger brother go through town at night. Venomania is wearing a hood to conceal his face (recollection).

Narration: “And it was then that he met her.”

A young Gumina appears before the two of them. She looks surprised (recollection).

Then there is a closeup of the present-day Gumina.

Narration: “Gumina Glassred.”

Manga Scenario Book-Chapter 4; Scene 2

Earl Ferdinand’s Mansion/Bedroom (Night)

Having transformed into a demon, Venomania thrusts out his right hand.

Rajih is blown back, and crumples, hitting the wall.

Rajih: “Y-you damn monster…”

Venomania approaches Rajih with an unhurried expression.

Venomania: “What’s wrong? Where did all that energy from before go off to?”

For a moment, Rajih looks to the exit, and thinks about whether he should flee or not. But after that he looks to the listless Lilien standing behind Venomania, and readies his resolve. He stands.

Rajih brings up his sword and charges at Venomania.

Rajih: “Arrrrrgh!”

Venomania rapidly catches the blade with his hands as he brings it down.

Venomania: “…Hmph.”

Then Venomania sends the sword flying.

Narration: “—On the other hand, the life of the boy that she birthed was one of tragedy.”

Venomania grabs Rajih’s face, and then throws him.

Narration: “Despite being born as the Duke’s heir, due to his hideous appearance he came to be called a ‘demon child’.”

Rajih once more hits the ground.

Narration: “He was locked up in the mansion’s basement, and forbidden from going outside.”

Venomania approaches the felled Rajih.

Narration: “To the world at large he came to be treated as a ‘non-person’.”

Venomania strikes Rajih’s face over and over again.

Manga Scenario Book-Chapter 4; Scene 1

Earl Ferdinand’s Mansion/On the Roof (Night)

IR as a red cat is gazing at the stars while on top of the mansion’s roof.

Narration: “—26 years ago, a woman grew heavy with child.”

A recollection of a woman (Venomania’s mother) holding her stomach. She’s still in the early stages of her pregnancy, so her belly hasn’t gotten that round yet.

Narration: “The woman was the wife of the regional lord, but she knew that the baby in her stomach was not that of her husband.”

A recollection of Venomania’s mother gazing at a young male servant.

Narration: “An illegitimate child between her and a servant—And without anyone finding out, she aborted the child. At some point, the servant disappeared from the mansion.”

This time there’s mother holding a large belly, and being celebrated by people around her (recollection).

Narration: “One year later, the woman again grew pregnant. This time it was without doubt one with the lord. She finally gave birth among the celebrations of those around her.”

The smiling mother, holding her newborn baby (recollection).

Narration: “However—”

The mother’s expression becomes strained (recollection).

There is an ugly face scab on the baby’s right cheek.

Narration: “—The baby had two faces.”

Venomania’s mother stands on a cliff (recollection).

Narration: “An ugly face scab dwelling on her own child’s cheek—she became convinced that it was a curse from the baby she had aborted.”

Narration: “The woman despaired—”

The mother leaps off the cliff (recollection).

Narration: “—And took her own life.”

.

Raucous sound can be heard from the inside of the mansion.

IR notices it.

IR: “…I guess it’s started.”

Earl Ferdinand’s Mansion/Hallway (Night)

Rajih continues to search for Lilien.

Rajih: Where? Where are you, Lilien!?

Rajih stands before a room that has a full suit of armor next to the door.

When he opens the door, it’s the bedroom that Venomania and Lilien are in.

Rajih: “Lilien!”

Lilien is cuddling with Venomania, eyes having clearly lost all sanity.

Rajih: “Get away from Lilien!”

Rajih draws a sword from the suit of armor and turns it towards Venomania.

Venomania: “Oh, a burglar? Or a pathetic boy who hasn’t had a woman in a while, taken by his envy?”

Rajih: “Be quiet, you murderer!”

Venomania: “…I see, so you saw that room, did you?”

Venomania stands.

Venomania: “Then it can’t be helped.”

Venomania’s eyes once more flash red.

Venomania: “My powers of ‘Lust’ don’t have any effect on men. Unfortunately…”

Venomania’s figure steadily starts to transform.

Rajih: “H-hey…This can’t be real—”

Fright shows on Rajih’s face.

Venomania: “I’ll just have to get rid of you physically.”

Venomania has changed into the form of an ugly demon.
