Banana Fish was not queer bait

I’m already seeing a lot of people complain that Ash was killed off just so he and Eiji would not end up together, and this is completely false. Ash makes it very clear he is going to send Eiji back to Japan so he can escape all the violence from day one. Eiji knew this, he was prepared to be sent back home. Ash was willingly letting him go to prevent harm from coming to Eiji. Eiji’s letter almost convinced Ash they could be together out of harm, but reality in the form of a knife struck. This was to show Ash still had enemies out there who would always be out for his blood. He would never be able to escape this life even if he wanted to, and he went back to his spot in the library he sat at in the beginning to show his stance on the matter went back to his original opinion. being stabbed made him remember why he wanted to stay away from Eiji, to keep him safe. No matter if he lived or died, I’m positive he would have stayed away from Eiji after getting stabbed because it only further cemented the truth to him, he would only bring harm to his loved ones. I believe he let himself “die”(he might be alive sob) either because he knew the wound was fatal or he didn’t want to live a violent and lonely life since he knew he could not bring Eiji back his side without putting him in danger. The writers also didn’t ‘tease’ at a relationship between them, the audience and characters themselves knew Ash and Eiji loved each other. But we also knew they were from different worlds, and they knew this as well. Banana fish’s ending was a well written tragedy, not queer bait.
