I tried different variations of how Iād stage the chairs and monitor, originally going for a face on approach but after playing around decided that it works best being angled in a corner, this along with the chairs creates the enclosed feeling I was after whilst also allowing room for extra people to stand and move around the work to watch too.
I tested it out and showed a few other students the film for the first time, with the reaction being similar to what has been said before- how itās hard to watch due to the content but easy at the same time, it doesnāt drag and although itās verging on 10 minutes it doesnāt feel that way whilst watching. This was again very encouraging as Iāve wondered whether people will stick around to watch it, but I guess that comes with presenting your work to an audience, once itās there you have to let go of it and how it should be viewed and perceived.

After buying headphones and trying them out once I had set up the tv, it turns out they werenāt compatible\didnāt work. This however didnāt need up being a problem as after experimenting with playing it out loud, Caroline, Craig and I all agreed that it isnāt necessarily a bad thing not having the headphones and it actually works better being out load as it isnāt pivotal for the piece to have the headphones.
The space that itās in still creates the intimacy so nothing is taken away by the fact you arenāt sitting with headphones as well

Something that got pulled up during the show and listen was that the text was too small and also the black border around it doesnāt work, and it should be just yellow like in the first video I made. I used the border because having the lighter film made it harder to see the yellow, but if I then enlarge it and add a shadow it should then be easier to viewer, also having the film on the monitor will help with the sizing.
Iāve experimented by placing the writing at the top too but ultimately settled by having it at the bottom, I feel like it reads better like having subtitles and also doesnāt distract the viewers eyes from the work.
I settled on naming the piece too much as that is a really prominent quote in the film for me, and massively influenced the feelings behind it. Iāve chosen to just use a basic black screen and font again for the title and credit page too.

Iām struggling deciding a name for the piece. I think that once you add a name to the piece it can really change the way itās perceived by the viewer, so itās important to pick the right one. Iāll need to have a name as Iām going to have a title and credit card on the star and the end of the perforce, so it has a more cinematic and professional film feel, so leaving it untitled would then hinder it.
Iāve spoken to Carl a few times about what and how I can possibly name it, heās suggested pulling words or phrases from the pre-existing quotes which is definitely something Iām going to do. I think either cups, or too much.

Week 24 -
Iāve decided for staging Iām going to keep it simple, the film holds itself enough without the need for any extras and by using chairs and headphones to create a ā intimate spaceā, I donāt think it necessarily needs to be sectioned off into a room.
Iāve bought som basic headphones from eBay that Ill attach to the tv for the viewers to use, I chose over the head headphones for hygiene reasons and I also think by having them attached to the tv it then adds to the feeling of being immersed into the film.
Iāll use two basic yellow chairs that I have at home, not only does it add a little bit of colour against the white walls but they also link with the palette of the text in the video, and it adds a personal touch to it.
I want to keep it as just two viewers at a time as this feels more intimate but less intimidating.

Week 23 -
Iāve been thinking about how I can stage the work so it isnāt just an open space with a projector or monitor. I was thinking possibly making a little room with a voile type fabric, just to have a enclosed space to possibly then add to the intimacy of it all. Or even a curtain to section off an area. In my show and listens it kept coming up about making it so itās an intimate experience between the viewer and the performer/film so Iām wondering how I can then enhance that with the staging without over killing it like before with the whole staged area.

Week 22 -
Iāve included a few references Iāve been looking at for crying in film. Although tall drastically different they all working really well in the way they create a specific emotion in their performances. I hadnāt actually seen the I, Tonya Clip until it was mentioned in my show and listen but can understand why it was - again I find it interesting how both similar in style (I.e the crying and pulling yourself together) they are still both so different in the emotion and power behind them, Margot Robbieās performance exuding desperation, chaos and mine being more of a desperate sadness, and longing for happier days)
Timothee chalamets end performance in call me by your name was a big inspiration behind using the single shot in my film, thereās nothing to hide behind and you can see see the moments of breaking and pulling back together. Without speaking you can read all the thoughts well enough on his face, even without the context of the film.

Week 22
Today we had our final show and listen which proved extremely informative for my piece and how it will be shown and presented for the exhibition.
Upon reflection I definitely lacked confidence in just showing the work by itself which is why I dressed it up with the table and chairs etc, it feel like I was softening the effect of the video - it felt really imposing and vulnerable to show a 10 minute video of myself and expect people to just watch so by adding more it was less daunting. Iāve realised now after the feedback that this isnāt the case and in fact the complete opposite.
My work was described as cinematic and I was told it held itself as just the video and everything extra actually demonised the work. And apart from some technicalities like font sizing and needing a title and ending page it was all really positive.
For the exhibition I feel like I will just use the video without anything else, Iām going to play with whether it should be projected or just on a tv monitor with headphones in the next week

Week 22
Iāve decided to stage my work for the show and listen to get feedback on it.
The video will be on my personal laptop and a table and chair will be dressed with my personal items to give the illusions of my space. Via the video youāre being let into the performers space and by the items you are literally in the space.
Iāll included items used in the video too including the hairbrush, I feel it gives a really human element to it seeing someoneās every day brush with their hair still in it. It really brings out the reality of the video and the fact itās just a regular person. I feel it makes it more relatable.
I am a bit worried about the fact itās still just a uni desk and chair but for the time being itās the best I can do, and depending on the feedback Iāll move forward.

Out of all the pieces of writing Iāve written over the months Iāve carefully chosen the ones I feel fit best and will use for the film.

Week 21
After the feedback from the show and listen I created this longer piece. I changed the lighting to daytime as I wanted to see how the soft light from the window affected the fragility of the film. The quality isnāt as great but with the vintage effect I feel like it gives it a almost vintage camcorder or super 8 film vibe which I donāt dislike!
The film being longer to me looses the affect I was after - by having it longer it compromises the emotion, crying for 20ish minutes not being something that is completely sustainable in one shot. Because of this loss of emotion I feel like it lacks the power the first 3 minute film had.
Iām probably going to refilm it taking into account all of these notes. I do however prefer the film in daylight though, and will carry on with that.

Week 21 -
I want to be able to incorporate my butterfly paintings somehow, whether itās just having them hanging still in another part of the studio for the exhibition. The listing meant a lot to me and even though not directly related to the film they still tie in with the work I feel, and I want to show them.

Week 20 -
Iāve questioned a few times now whether the stills of my film could be taken out of context and used as a body of work as their own - similar to the work of Sarah bah bah who ive previously mentioned.
Although the effect of the film is lost and along with it the fluidity of the journey of the piece, I think there is still a lot of power of the stand alone pieces with text. I also think they then can create a completely different narrative when being faced with a given one via the film

Week 20 -
In my tutorial we discussed how the video will be presented, Iāve decided a singular screen with possibly headphones coming out - to create a intimate 1-1 space. I have toyed with the idea of having a few of the personal objects (hair brush, mascara ect and possibly some flowers) used during the video display on a table/dresser in front of the work, to give a physical element to the film. I feel like this could give a really human vibe to the video - seeing someoneās personal hair brush with hair still tangled in it whilst watching them use it in a video. It creates a realness to the performance. This is something I will play with more in the future though when I am at the point of staging.
Carl also asked why I couldnāt make multiple videos to break down to work, so 7 3 minute videos possibly. I explained that to me this doesnāt work as it takes away the rawness of the video which is a pivotal part for me - the performance is an open and exposed book that the viewer is let into, the single shot reflects this (nothing is cut out or edited it comes as it is- often how we are in real life) so to then cut and edit and create multiples it takes away the power in a sense.

Week 19 -
American Honey (2016) // Andrea Arnold
This film and the story telling/ directorial style is a massive inspiration for my work - not only my film work Iāve been creating recently but it set a lot of the ground work for my earlier pieces too. Arnold creates realistic stories, not made for climaxās and cinematic flare that you expect to sell out the box offices.
Her story telling is continuous and often times a bit mundane which can feel slow and boring- this reflecting The average persons everday. this film specifically follows a character and her life chronologically, the film is raw and intimate, you really get a grasp of the leads thoughts, feelings and processes.
This is all helped by the naturalistic cinematography.
Itās Inspired my work in so many ways - I want viewers to take away a similar truthful insight after viewing my work. It isnāt made to stun or wow but to tell a open story, and create conversations. I have always said if my work is anything I always want it to be truthful.
