A good idea, at its core, might've involved backup: the presence of working comms, functioning channels through which to locate any life signs.
Though she'd weighted her proposition against multiple alternatives, no plan La'an had run through in her mind — calmly as she could, despite the acridity in the back of her throat, the cold biting at her fingertips — had seemed faultless — or without its risk.
" It's not ideal, " she supplied, an unembellished offering — nothing to really offer any resolution to their dilemma. " But I'm not sure we've got a better one. "

psa. things are starting to look up. I've resigned from my job ( and will be taking a little break before I start applying for new and exciting things ), meaning I'll be finished there on the 31st. in the meantime, I'm still signed off sick and am actually starting to feel more like myself, so I think I'll be here a bit more often!

That, La'an knew without question, was beyond just being true. Una had always been a problem - solver, had always been an engineer of figuring out a way out when the odds seemed slim and any scant sliver of optimism she herself had was little more than nonexistent. But it was more than just instinct, more than just the learned and finely honed intuition of an XO with more experience on the bridge of a constitution class starship than La'an even had in uniform.
It was intellect. It was the guts to bend rules, to find and utilise even the most microscopic of loopholes — illegal and not — when the situation required.
La'an's brow crinkled upward, not in disagreement, but in regard.
" Believing luck's on your side is how you get people killed, " she simply offered. Dramatic, perhaps, but not wrong. She'd never been one to trust in it. Never for herself. " What's the math telling you? "
