Campbell and LRFW’s Journey to the Finale
Campbell and LRFW’s Journey to the Finale
By: Jasmine Jennings
When fashion week comes to mind, some might think of big states with lots of trendy clothes & lights. Brandon D. Campbell had other thoughts for Arkansas, when he decided to start the first ever fashion week in the state.
Despite challenges and naysayers, LRFW along with Campbell have prevailed tremendously in his hometown - Little Rock. Little Rock Fashion Week has opened doors up for many people, thanks to Campbell.
In 2008, Campbell, a writer and producer at World Wrestling Entertainment at the time, was well into his career and the bright idea of having a fashion week in Little Rock popped into his head.
Growing up in the 90s Campbell expressed how gang violence plagued the streets of Little Rock. There weren’t many outlets available for youths then, he said. Violence was so bad in Little Rock that in 1994 HBO created a documentary film called “Gang War: Bangin’ in Little Rock”. Reoccurring violence made it easier to get into something you shouldn’t, when there weren’t many outlets to express yourself.
Campbell recalled the struggle he had as a youth to find outlets for creative expression. With those memories in mind, Campbell sought to establish a platform that would benefit young people; keep them out of trouble during the summer; and build their confidence. LRFW did.
LRFW started merely as an inspired thought; Campbell decided to turn that thought, which was weighing heavily on his heart into reality in 2009. Campbell was inspired to start LRFW because of the people in the city that had inspired him throughout his life. Left his TV entertainment career, packed up and moved back home.
Getting LRFW jumpstarted was no easy task, there were people who just didn’t like the idea of Little Rock having a fashion week, and a lot of people couldn’t grasp the idea of a small city like Little Rock having something so illustrious. Another issue was a lack of outside financial backing, so Campbell used his own money from his savings (tens of thousands of dollars) to get LRFW off the ground.
While launching LRFW for him, Campbell found his passion and his woman, a beautiful soul named Constance Williams. He could lean on her when obstacles became overbearing. Constance has been with him through thick and thin; who now goes by Mrs. Campbell. They’ve been married going on 4 years and have two daughters Lennox (2 years old) and Mackenzie (10 months).
Campbell remembers having people tell him the idea would never work in Little Rock. He didn’t allow negativity or doubters stop him from reaching the main goal: making LRFW a success. Campbell says one of the hardest obstacles LRFW overcame was the lukewarm response it got from the community.  During the trails associated with building a successful fashion business, Campbell learned a lot about himself and how to succeed.
Campbell recalls a negative review written by a local publication after the first LRFW that he says took LRFW a couple of years to shake, because it lowered the brand’s value in the public’s eye.
“There were some I believe who were just looking for something that was wrong with LRFW, rather then what was right. Little Rock is small, so perception here is everything. One negative review travels quickly and can usurp all the good your venture has done. It can make it an even bigger challenge for securing different sponsors and loyal customers,” Campbell said.
After the rain, comes the sun. Through time and perseverance, LRFW was able to prove itself to the city and prove doubters wrong. Show attendance grew and LRFW events carved out its own fashion niche of being sophisticated, sexy and changeable. It kept evolving and giving the community something to look forward each year.
LRFW has featured over 150 fashion labels over the years. Many designer alumni have shown in national Fashion Weeks, including New York’s and Los Angeles’s, had their clothing worn by celebrities and sold their fashions in stores across the country in stores, including Kari Bryd whose Novel Approach Jewelry line was picked up by Belk and sold in its stores.
LRFW has opened doors for models by locating paid opportunities and high fashion runway shows that originally weren’t as inclusive to new models and models of color. Campbell says that he is very proud of the work he’s done with African American models. In 2011, Arkansas Bride Magazine featured the first local African American as its cover model – LaBrea Rashaad, a former LRFW model Campbell discovered and developed.
With Campbell’s guidance and knowledge, LRFW has had several interns go on to work in fashion and entertainment media for companies such as E!, Google, and TMZ, to name a few. Bethany Hines, a former LRFW model and intern, currently resides in NYC and is a producer for CNN. LRFW was Hine’s first internship.
With its success came recognition for Campbell and LRFW.  Campbell was named by Arkansas Life Magazine as a Style Setter in Arkansas.  He received the Power Play Magazine’s “Playmaker Award.” In 2013, Little Rock Mayor’s Office proclaimed the third week of July officially “Little Rock Fashion Week.”
Campbell explained that everything takes time and God works through people to give that boost of encouragement. This is what motivated Campbell to keep going. Campbell has flourished over the years since starting LRFW. Campbell has gone on to start Oneofakind Baton Rouge Fashion Week, which is heading into its 5th year, and his own apparel brand iME.
In 2010, he founded Oneofakind Talent Inc, a boutique modeling and talent firm. As an agent, Campbell’s models have been booked for jobs by Wal-Mart, Dillard’s, Axe, Proctor & Gamble to name a few.
Sadly, this year’s LRFW will be the final one for the city of Little Rock. Campbell has given back to the good people of Arkansas. He has not only given back to the community by volunteering various places such as with the Little Rock School District and Big Brothers & Big Sisters, CARTI & Easter Seals, Campbell has opened plenty of doors for those who wouldn’t have the opportunity if it weren’t for him starting LRFW.
However, Campbell describes discontinuing LRFW not as a closing of a chapter, but turning the page in current journey. Starting this fall, Campbell will be starting a new fashion week in Plano, TX – Plano Fashion Week. The model call for Plano Fashion week will be held September 24 and the main show will be on October 29 at event1013. With hard work and determination, Campbell has truly outdone himself.
“I believed in what I was doing, because I knew Little Rock Fashion Week was going to be something good for the community,” said Campbell.
“God didn’t give me this vision for it and myself to fail. When you’re truly doing something good that benefits so many people, it shouldn’t exist in a vacuum. It’s meant to be shared, and that’s what I’m doing by branching out into other markets. I will admit, though, It’s a good feeling when you can turn your haters into your biggest believer,” Campbell ended with a grin.
LRFW: The Finale is Saturday July 22nd at the Statehouse Convention Center. Doors open at 7 pm. Show starts at 8 pm. Campbell will be the emcee.
Sponsorship partners for LRFW 9 include Oneofakind Talent Inc., Belk, iME clothing brand, J Kelly Referrals & Information Services and Club Level.

Lights, Camera, Legs! Little Rock Fashion week announces new models for 2017
Lights, Camera, Legs! Little Rock Fashion week announces new models for 2017.By: JASMINE JENNINGS                     JUNE 2017 Little Rock, Ark.— Brandon D. Campbell’s Little Rock Fashion Week has been a shining ray of light on the city of Little Rock for nine seasons. Every year models from all over come to audition, to see if they can snag a chance at being chosen to graze the runway.
A few of the chosen models for LRFW 9 shared their thoughts on the upcoming final LRFW. “Own your individuality on the runway, and you will prosper like no other,” said Ebony Cannady, model from Pine Bluff, Ark.   Rosalyn Cornelius, a returning model from Baton Rouge has been modeling for three years now.
Cornelius won LRFW’s 2016 Model of the Year award, an annual award selected collectively by media members, fashion executives, scouts and LRFW participants.Cornelius was one of the judges for this year’s LRFW Model Search.Cornelius explained that she enjoyed her experience as a judge, but she learned that it’s not wise to mix business with friendship.
She expressed that it was hard judging the models if they did wrong, because a lot of them were her friends. “I feel like the finale of Little Rock is going to go out with a bang, and I’m going to meet more people and see what’s new,” said Cornelius. Mackenzie Howald, of Ft. Smith, Ark., is one of the younger models selected for LRFW. At twelve years old Howald is ready to conquer everything ahead of her. Given Howald’s age, she offers advice to young aspiring models.
“Don’t give up on your dreams; you should just go for it. It’s a really good experience, and it can build your confidence” said Howald.   Cannady is a first time model for LRFW is looking forward to taking it all in. “I want to absorb as much information as I possibly can. This is a new experience for me and I would like to learn different fashion styles and modeling techniques.
I also want to acquire the skills to become a better model,” said Cannady. Cannady explained that she was nervous about trying out at first. She got more comfortable once she met everyone and seen that they were so nice. Darshán Nichols, of Conway, Ark., expressed goals he hoped to achieve by doing LRFW.
“A couple of my goals as a model include building confidence and growing as an individual. Also, [I want] to find what is special within myself, and have the courage to do different things of that aspect,” he said.

LRFW impacts the local community June 19, 2015 By: Tabitha Cooke Little Rock, Ark. Little Rock Fashion Week (LRFW) is preparing for another great year and people in the community have their calendar marked for it. Every year, LRFW exceed the expectations of an enjoyable, yet, one-of-a-kind experience that bring emerging designers, models, and artists together to connect and establish their brands. “LRFW is a great platform to allow those seeking careers in the modeling and fashion industry a leg to stand on in hopes of creating or expanding their brand,” said fashion designer, Nichole McGehee, who has been participating in LRFW since 2009. “As for me, LRFW has benefited me in helping to put my brand in the “spotlight” of the media. I feel that being a part of LRFW played a great part of my line becoming known on both a local and national level.” Nicole McGehee Collection has been featured in numerous fashion shows across the country, sold in boutiques, and in 2013 was headlined during New York’s Fashion Week. Today, McGehee is one of the most popular and beloved designers in Arkansas. Nicole McGehee Collection will debut its new fall/winter line, along with six other labels, at LRFW’s Big Night on July 18th, which is taking place downtown on Main Street in what is called the Creative Corridor. This will mark the first ever outdoor fashion show on the streets of downtown Little Rock. For being recognized as the leader in serving the community, LRFW has received a great deal of interest from the City of Little Rock. “LRFW brings a little of the big city to Little Rock. It allows us to experience the fashion industry without going to New York or LA,” said City Director, Doris Wright. When asked what she thought was unique and different about LRFW from other shows, Director Wright stated, “It allows me to experience what I love and that is to see the new fashions on display.” During its 5th annual ceremony, the City of Little Rock’s Major Office proclaimed the third week of July officially Little Rock Fashion Week. Wright, then Vice Mayor of Little Rock, presented LRFW’s founder Brandon D. Campbell the certificate. Since its inception, over 2,250 models have auditioned to be in LRFW with only 599 chosen to walk its exclusive runways. Besides gaining experience, launching their modeling careers, signing with agencies, LRFW’s models compete for the distinction “Model of the Year.” In May, nearly 300 aspiring models from Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, and Mississippi showed up at the annual model search to compete for the opportunity to show off their runway walks. Only 60 models were chosen and all areas of Arkansas including Jade Viera, who is not new to the fashion industry. “I have been participating in LRFW since 2013 and every rehearsal, hair, make-up session and show has been nothing but fun and excitement.” she stated. “LRFW has helped me improve as a model professionally.” Over the past 6 years, LRFW have increased awareness, potential growth and opportunity for the community. Guests and participants from across the state, country and sometimes other countries migrate to the Capital City every third week in July for LRFW. They stay in hotels, shop at local stores and eat at restaurants. “I have learned that there is something for everyone from children, adults and seniors in modeling,” said Mona Meeks, Director of Marketing/Sales for J Kelly Referrals & Information Services. “Each year there are new and different events that include the entire community.” LRFW offers the fashion industry a unique perspective and the city should celebrate being diverse through its live entertainment, music and fashion. “There are a lot of great shows here within the city as well as the state and I can name quite a few that I have been a part of which were all great experiences but LRFW is one of the shows that spotlights on the “underdogs," said Nicole McGehee. Founded by Campbell, a Little Rock native and former Hollywood TV live events producer in 2009, LRFW has featured over 100 fashion lines by emerging and established fashion designers. With 15,000 followers on our social media, over 5,000 e-mail subscribers and an average of over 500,000 page views annually at LittleRockFashionWeek.com, LRFW is one of the most popular fashion experiences in the country. LRFW 7 is July 13-18 at various venues, leading up to its Big Night showcase on Main St. Tickets are available now at LittleRockFashionWeek.com. Sponsorship partners for LRFW 7 include Oneofakind Talent Inc., LaQuinta Inn & Suites, Comfort Inn & Suites Presidential, Belk, iME clothing brand, Fricaine, J Kelly Referrals & Information Services, FashionUnited, Club Level,La Opinión Newspaper and the Arkansas Travelers. Model hopefuls get a glance in LRFW at casting
May 12, 2015
By: Tabitha Cooke
Tumblr media
Little Rock, Ark. – Nearly 300 aspiring models arrived excited and ready to show off their runway walks for the annual Little Rock Fashion Week Model Search. The event held on May 2nd and May 3rd at the La Quinta Inn and Suites Downtown Conference Center, 617 S. Broadway St. in downtown Little Rock, hosted models of all ages, genders and ethnicities.
“I am very excited and I really hope that I get a spot because it seems like a great event, said 22 year-old, Lawrence Blake Hannon of Little Rock, Ark. “I am new to the fashion business but I am excited and I really hope that I can be a part of it.”
One of the best things about the annual Model Search is that it allows first-time hopeful models to boost up their level of confidence and get exposure with leaders of the modeling industry.
“I came today for experience and I have big dreams for modeling.” Lawrence stated. “I want to do fashion print and I’d like to do a little runway but this was my first time actually walking in front of people. I was nervous the whole time but it was exciting and I love it as well as the culture.”
Upon arrival, models were expected to fill out applications, take photos, get measured, and be ready to take direction before showing off their runway walks in front of the judges.
When asked what she thought would make the judges pick her, 7 year old Shae McCain Justice of Little Rock, Ark. said, “Well I kind of move my hips when I walk and on America’s Next Top Model, a lot of people did that and the people who did that probably stayed the longest.”
Confidence and attitude are what the judges were looking for in each model. Some people auditioned to try something new while others came with experience to advance in the fashion industry.
“I have never tried modeling before but I always tell people that they should go out and explore new things and step outside of their comfort zone so I figured I should do the same thing. Practice what you preach, right?” said 25 year-old, Judi Kanu of Little Rock, Ark.
The LRFW 2015 Model of the Year will be announced after LRFW 7. All models compete to win a modeling contract with Oneofakind Talent Inc., a cash prize, LRFW merchandise, and a webpage at www.LittleRockFashionWeek.com.
Models that auditioned came from all areas of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee to try to earn a spot in LRFW’s runway shows, during July 13-18. Models selected were notified through email Monday, May 11.
Sponsorship partners for LRFW 7 include Oneofakind Talent Inc, La Quinta Inn & Suites, Comfort Inn & Suites Presidential, Belk, iME clothing brand, Fricaine, J Kelly Referrals & Information Services, FashionUnited and the Arkansas Travelers.
For more information about LRFW visit LittleRockFashionWeek.com or contact Tabitha Cooke of LRFW Public Relations department, at 501-259-2139 or [email protected].
