It was difficult for Romana to explain just why she didn’t want them gone—what they meant to her, what they served to remind her of.
“Doctor, you don’t—know what they are, alright?” She told her, eyes shutting tight. Her voice remained loud, though, even if it broke halfway through, going quieter. “They remind me of a large part of my life, and I don’t want to forget about it, because then I’ll just—make the same mistakes that got me there in the first place.”
Clearing her throat, she tried not to think about it, tried to move past it all. But Romana slowly opened her eyes, her voice far more level now. “Twenty years, Doctor. Twenty years can’t be erased by regeneration energy.”
“I didn’t mean to! I regenerated, got chucked out over Earth and then she vanished.” The Doctor insisted, pouting. “I managed to find her again though eventually. Which is good, I was worried about her.”
The Doctor wasn’t expecting a huge amount of gratitude from Romana, but that reaction was the last thing she expected. She flinched away, the regeneration energy fading away quickly as she stared up in shock.
“I’m trying to help!” She replied, voice the same volume as Romana’s. “I have an extra set of regenerations, I’ve got energy to waste. And it’s not a waste if it’s to help you!” She insisted. “I’ve spent years mourning you, let me remove a few scars. Please, it’s the least I can do.”

“You lost her?” Romana asked, turning towards the Doctor simply to let her see the look of disbelief that spread over her face. “Seems like you really haven’t changed much, managing to lose your TARDIS!”
The joking smile that was on her face began to fade, though, as the Doctor came closer to her. At first, she simply watched, frowning at the attention on the scars.
But then she felt regeneration energy surrounding it, something that made her yank her hand right back. Eyes wide, her mind ran wildly trying to find out why she would do that. “What are you doing?” She asked, voice just slightly louder than before.
“Do you know how irresponsible that is, Doctor? That’s just wasteful! If I needed them gone, I would’ve done it myself. Don’t you ever do something so... so stupid like that again, alright?”
“I did it.” She repeated. “I had to do it. If I didn’t then the Web of Time and the universe as a whole would’ve collapsed.” The Doctor explained as gently as she could. “You were’t there Romana. You didn’t see what the war became, what happened to our people. We started out not wanting to interfere and ended up obsessed with war. It was horrific.”
It was something the Doctor still saw every time she closed her eyes. It was something she heard in every moment of silence. Each time she regenerated she was foolish enough to believe the nightmares would go away. And whilst in this body they were much better than they had been, they still stuck around.
The Doctor didn’t say a word as she led Romana through the building to the TARDIS. She opened the door and let Romana in, knowing it would be a bit of a shock. “She’s had a make over.” The woman said gently. “She’s changed almost as many times as I have.”

That conformation was really all that Romana needed. She doubted that someone else would replicate the Doctor in such a way—until, of course, she mentioned both apologizing and missing her.
Her relationship with the Doctor—the one that she knew, at least—didn’t often include them apologizing. Truthfully, she liked to believe that she could tell things like that from things that the Doctor said instead, but Romana wasn’t quite used to such a forward statement like that. Not from her.
“Well, I would ask you why you didn’t expect to see me again, but you seem like the kind of person who’d tell me without thinking of what it could mean,” Romana half-joked. “I would also say that I missed you too, but you’re also back at the TARDIS—I saw you a few moments ago, really.”

Romana, truthfully, had a difficult time adjusting to her life as it was—with the Doctor, that was. Of course, she knew what she was getting into. As soon as she discovered that she was going to be helping him out on his mission, she decided that it would be best to learn everything about him that she could.
Yet, the Doctor was unpredictable—far more so than she could’ve ever imagined, no matter how many times people told her just that. That was why she supposed that it was a good choice for her own first mission—she had to learn how to deal with people like him.
She certainly needed her breaks, though. They had been traveling for a long time—well, it seemed like so long for her, but she was still a relatively younger Time Lord—and yet she still wasn’t exactly used to his antics. That was why she tended to stay within the console on the few days that the Doctor actually slept. Even if the TARDIS never properly talked back to her, K-9 did, and that was better than trying to do idle work by herself.
Eventually, though, that too became rather boring. That was what led to her own trips—every now and then, she would convince the TARDIS to let her fly somewhere. It was never far, but it was something, and that was all that Romana could ask for.
This time, she found herself wandering Earth—the Doctor takes about it so often, she figured that it may be interesting to walk around without a sense of doom lingering over her.
It was rather cold, she noted, looking around at the people walking the streets. Late, too, really.
She found herself wanting to have a proper Earth experience, one that she could enjoy.
That was why she found herself just briefly tapping on the shoulder of a stranger. “Excuse me—miss?” She asked, paying no attention to the way that the other seemed just slightly off.
“I’m in town with my—mates. New here, I suppose. I wanted to ask you about some directions.”

“I didn’t say that,” she told him, even if it caused her smile to just barely widen. “You certainly look older, though, don’t you? Younger, actually, if we’re going by everything but your eyes. Spent so much time traveling with people younger than you that now you want to look the same, hmm?”
When he said that, though, a small laugh came out of her. “Oh, I think that burned is me being nice, Doctor. I’ve only regenerated a bit,” Romana spoke, looking rather proud with that. “And here you are, probably—five, six regenerations down the road, I’m guessing.”
lostwanderinghearts‌:
“This form does seem softer than my others,” Romana just barely joked, letting out the smallest laughter. “Besides, you’ve changed a lot since I last saw you on Etra Prime. Didn’t want you getting all careful around me.”
Her smile widened at his next words, even if she kept herself rather composed. “I might take you up on that,” she half-joked, even if she was truly serious about that. “Because you’re stuck with me, too. Even if you’ve burned through so many faces.”
He’d spent enough time around the likes of River and Amy to know when to keep his mouth shut; he’d judged that this was one such occasion where his prattling would end with a smack or an annoyed Romana glaring at him. Best not to comment on her own judgment. The polite silence was alright, he supposed, given how lovely his smile was. “I’ve gotten old, is what you’re saying.” And if she wasn’t? Well, probably best that she accept it sooner rather than later anyway.
His face scrunched up at the terminology used, look somewhere between genuine and completely false offence. “I wouldn’t say burned. There were a few shootings in there. A radiation dump…” a shrug of his shoulder, smile creeping back onto his face, “Knowing your luck, though, you’ll be stuck with this particular face for a while yet. I’m not quite done with it yet!”

Oh, that really didn’t help him decipher just what the other thought of him. It did, however, cause him to pause, unable to help the shocked look that spread across his face for a moment or two.
“The Doctor?” The Master repeated, eyebrows just barely furrowing. If she was telling the truth, then the Doctor had a daughter, which truly wasn’t something that he thought would ever happen. Not again.
“That doesn’t surprise me—he’s always vague when it comes to his stories, hmm? Especially with someone like me. He probably goes on and on about morals.”
Jenny came up and started poking the Master's shoulder. "'Cuse me, are you the Master my dad talks about?"
“That depends,” the Master responded almost instantly, rather used to people doing things like that—mostly having to do with some type of revenge, if he was being honest. Turning around to face her, he began to speak up once more. “Who’s your dad?” The question was, of course, a natural one—one which he mostly asked to make sure that the person he faced wouldn’t try to punch him.

“I’m never going to give you the password,” she responded almost instantly, eyes narrowed. Of course, she was used to dealing with the Doctor—they had only met a few times, that was true, but it was enough for her to be wary—to never underestimate her.
Ignoring the way that her hearts were beating within her chest, Romana did her best to push past it, taking in a deep breath. “I hope you realize that this isn’t going to work. How many plans have come before this, hm? And how many have succeeded?”

“don’t you look so pretty tied in ropes.” the Doctor says, a cruel smile on her lips. “Your Majesty, you are intruding on things you should not be intruding on.” the device in the middle of the room is beeping rapidly, indicating the time is almost up, but yet the MASTER is nowhere to be found. Her adversary was nowhere to be found. Perhaps she would finally get away with this. Approaching Romana, the Doctor puts a finger underneath her chin. “Just give me the password for the TARDIS room. Give it TO ME AND I’LL LET YOU LIVE.”

If anything, the Doctor’s tone only fueled her further—she found that this regeneration truly was more of a hothead—Romana has gone through a lot, over the years. Just barely, she found a hand clasping around her wrist—feeling the indents and scars still left over from years of handcuffs being secured onto them.
She didn’t need to be babied, that was ridiculous. A piece of herself reminded her that the Doctor truthfully did have good reasons for what she did, but her mind was clouded with loss and shock. That small bit of her mind, though, was what held her back from going off—at least, not yet.
When they got to the TARDIS, Romana couldn’t help the grin that spread onto her face. “Oh, she looks amazing,” she spoke, voice rather soft at that—it took her a second before she spoke, though, just barely disappointed that the familiar interior wasn’t there—but the old girl truly did deserve some redecoration. “At least you didn’t keep her the same, all these years. I bet she likes a change every now and then.”
“I did it.” She repeated. “I had to do it. If I didn’t then the Web of Time and the universe as a whole would’ve collapsed.” The Doctor explained as gently as she could. “You were’t there Romana. The Doctor never forget any of her friends. They each had their own compartments in her mind, their own little doors where every memory was stored. Some she didn’t visit as often as others. Romana she visited more than she wanted to admit.
She loved every version of the Time Lady. Loved her sweet bubbly energy in her second body of course, the one that matched her so well. But Romana’s first body held a special place in her hearts too. it was the first one she knew, the first one she fell in love with.
It was a quiet day in Sheffield. Yaz was had just started an evening shift, Ryan was playing video games and Graham was catching up on some gardening. Leaving the Doctor was nothing to do but wait for them.
She wandered about aimlessly, trying to entertain herself when she felt a tap on her shoulder. Whirling round, the Doctor knew the other was talking but nothing computed. That was impossible, she shouldn’t be here. She didn’t remember ever coming here. And yet here Romana was talking to her. The first Romana as well.
“I…” She started, for once completely lost for words before the Doctor managed to string a sentence together. “How are you here?” She asked, taking out her sonic and scanning Romana quickly. This absolutely shouldn’t be happening.
Even if Romana was able to easily pass off the others slightly odd appearance—she found that an awful lot of humans had weird fashion senses—the way that she reacted was certainly different. Something that Romana couldn’t just pass off.
“Well, I think that’s rather obvious. I took a—bus here, if you really must know,” she slightly joked, trying to remain hopeful that this stranger wasn’t someone who already knew her.
The sonic screwdriver within her hands instantly told Romana something, though. There was only one person who had one of them, really, it was something that she found was unique—truthfully, the Doctor would probably throw a fit if someone else tried to replicate.
“Doctor?” Her voice was just slightly astonished, cocking an eyebrow. “I see that you made an upgrade in your regeneration. Unless something happened that I don’t know about, you’re a future version, aren’t you?”
It was rather interesting to Romana, really—she hadn’t dealt with something like that, not with someone that she knew well. That was what caused her smile to just barely widen, the confused look leaving her face. Because truthfully, it was exciting, although she wouldn’t say it outright. Not instantly.

“I know, I didn’t mean to.” She replied, smiling sheepishly. The Doctor didn’t want to go into detail. She didn’t want to explain how she had lost so many lives. The best thing was to move on, that’s what she found now. The Doctor of hope didn’t look backwards.
But that was impossible when with a member of her race that should be dead or locked away. She leaned against the console, glancing up at Romana. For her now youthful look, the Doctor still had an unnerving skill in looking centuries old. The weight and the pain from the war seemed to be crushing her as she shook her head sadly.
“They’re locked away, time locked. It was that or destroying them completely.” She said softly. “I’m sorry Romana, I had to. The war became hell.” She took a step towards her old friend, wanting to reach out. But this body still wasn’t sure about contact, she wasn’t sure what to do. “I thought I lost you.”
“You did it.” Her voice was quiet at that, trying to process that fact. Romana had always known the Doctor as someone who was unpredictable, someone who’s next move couldn’t be determined, and yet she could never expect that she would do that—that she would practically abandon everyone from their planet. At least, that’s what it looked like, to her.
Romana’s eyes shut, trying to ignore the sickness that she felt at the mere thought of it all. More than anything, she wanted to reach forward, seek comfort with her old friend. Her old friend, the one who put their planet in a time lock—Her old friend, who made it so that she couldn’t see any of her other friends for as long as she lived.
So instead of reaching out, instead of trying to talk through it, Romana simply straightened her back and opened her eyes up. “Which way did you say the TARDIS was?” She asked, trying to ignore the way that her voice wavered. “We’d better get there before anything else happens.”
The Doctor rolled her eyes fondly and let out a small laugh despite herself. That was the Romana she had missed. “Yeah thanks for that.” She smiled.
Hearing that Romana was experienced in escaping cells was concerning, but that was a question for later. They both definitely had a huge amount of catching up it seemed.
“Sounds like a plan.” She replied, holding out of her chained wrists and offering a small smile. “Don’t suppose you can help me out here? Gonna be a bit hard to run otherwise.”

As the stranger continued, the Doctor only became more confused. She was used to odd things and people—she was one herself, really, but the mention of regeneration and ‘dad’ caused her heart to speed up—after all, no one else had said either of those things to her in a long, long time.
When the other said her name, though, it only caused her eyes to blow wide, trying to find out how that was possible. Jenny died in front of her, she couldn’t be back. Especially after all of those years.
“What?” It was what the Doctor managed to get out first, even if she backtracked soon after—trying to find out what she should say. “You’ll learn one thing quickly—I don’t like liars. Who are you really?”
❝Whoa, hey. You alright there?❞ [Angst 'first' meeting starter, 13 to Jenny]

Jenny blinked. She must be delusional. It looked like dad stood over her. Was she gonna regenerate? No, this wasn’t that bad of an injury. Though it did look bad from the blood on her shirt. It was mostly the other guy’s, promise.
“…I will be but… Why am I talking to myself? Go away hallucination! Shoo, shoo! Lemme regenerate.”

“Thirteen?” Romana repeated, eyes blowing wide at that. Well, she knew that the Doctor was wreckless, of course. She had been around her long enough to know that.
But still, the number was difficult to process—both because of the large difference from the last one that she knew of and the fact that Time Lords weren’t supposed to be able to have so many of them.
And then the Doctor was continuing, so Romana had to push those thoughts and questions aside—she wouldn’t be any use if she wasn’t focusing on what was actually happening.
As soon as she went on, though, Romana felt her heart completely drop—Gallifrey couldn’t be gone, that was ridiculous. It made no sense, the Time Lords couldn’t just die off. It was impossible.
Shaking her head rather quickly, Romana instantly began to deny it. “No, no, that’s impossible. Gallifrey can’t just be—gone! They can’t be, Doctor.

Of course, Rose’s first realization about the other was that this man was completely insane. She was used to a world of odd things—time travel, skipping through universes, aliens, things that would usually cause her to be the odd one. And yet, the person in front of her was—either drunk or a nutter. Or both.
“Maybe it’s time to put down the drink, mate,” she told him, raising an eyebrow—“Even if you say that you’re immortal, your liver ‘prolly isn’t, eh?” Deciding to at least humor the stranger, Rose let out the smallest laugh.
“Being immortal isn’t really a thing for us, though. Neither are—powers.”
lostwanderinghearts‌:
As soon as Rose had heard a voice, her eyes shot open, widening as she saw the man in front of her. Instinctively, her hand reached towards the circular dimension hopper resting on her hip, wondering why it placed her in front of someone.
“Yeah, yeah. ‘M fine,” she reassured, just barely shaking her head. Moving on from her thoughts, she took note of the bottle in his hand, hoping that he could possibly be too drunk to remember how she had gotten there.
“Power?” Rose asked, cocking an eyebrow. Really, it seemed like she was also there with a nutter, which was also just wonderful. “What d’you mean, a power?”
Oh, she was even cuter up close. Alright, Nathan, time to dial up the ol’ charm-o-metre to ten!
“Ya don’t have t’ be shy about it,” he stated. His eyes glinted and he leaned conspiratorially toward her as he approached, voice lowering, “I have a power too.”
Nathan popped back on his heels and tossed the bottle to his other hand, looking as smug as if he’d just told her some great world secret. And, really, maybe it should be. A smart person might think that it wouldn’t be wise to tell just anyone hey, I have a superpower! but Nathan had never been “smart” or “wise”.
He let the statement hang in the air, waiting for it to really sink in. Dramatic effect before the big reveal ‘n’ all that. Finally, Nathan grinned and spread his arms.
          “I’m immortal!”

Romana let out a laugh from the way that the Doctor tightened her grip on her, letting her eyes close for a few moments. Truthfully, she didn’t think that she would ever be able to see someone from her past, let alone the Doctor—and with such a change, although she had to admit that it seemed to be a good one. “Not—the entire time,” she admitted, just barely clearing her throat. Truthfully, she didn’t enjoy going into that—hence why she decided to move on from that.
“Thirteenth?” She repeated, just barely pausing at that. “Oh, then it’s either been a long time or you’ve been burning through them. And if that’s what it is, don’t think that I won’t scold you for it.”
lostwanderinghearts‌:
“You could always bow at me and yell at me about just how amazing I am,” Romana teased, instantly hugging back. She took a few moments to just relish in that hug, to think about the fact that she had found the Time Lord who she used to travel with oh so long ago. “I only got out of E-Space after—it all, I was gone for the war. I didn’t even know about it.” Her voice took in a sadder tone, even if she tried to keep it lighter. “You’ve changed quite a bit, haven’t you?”
“Could do that, I s’pose.” the Doctor grins, hugging her even tighter. it had been a LONG time since they had travelled together, and the Doctor had indeed missed Romana, even if at the time they hadn’t really liked her (well, they had but they were slightly envious shh). “You were gone for the war?” she repeats, almost as if she were confused. she had thought for certain Romana had been on Gallifrey, but she was wrong. Strange. She didn’t like being wrong. “I have, yes. New body. Thirteenth. Quite like it, actually.”
